Mental Health Professionals

Mental health professions are becoming increasingly popular, but what exactly is a mental health professional and what do they do?  To find out more about possible careers in mental health, please complete the following:
  • Read a short snippet from NAMI that describes the various mental health professionals.
  • After reading the article from NAMI, I would like you to choose two mental health professions and do some self-guided research on them.
  • Describe the two professions that you have chosen.  What do they do?  What type of education do you need?  Where do they work? Etc.
If you are thinking about going into mental health, what are your plans?

27 comments:

  1. The first profession I chose is the psychiatrist. I chose this one because I have an interest in medical school. Psychiatrists are the only mental health professional to require either an MD or a DO degree. To receive this degree, four years of school after an undergraduate education is needed (not including residency). Each psychiatrist needs to be licensed in a particular state. These professionals are required to pass board examinations. Their main goals jobs are to provide medical and psychiatric evaluations, trat psychiatric disorders, provide psychotherapy and prescribe medication.

The second profession I chose is the psychologist. This profession requires a doctoral degree. Licensure is also requires for psychologist in each state they practice. Psychologists provide psychological testing, evaluations, treat emotional and behavioral problems and mental disorders, and provide a variety of psychotherapeutic techniques.

  2. One of the professions I chose to look at was a social worker. Social workers either have an associates, bachelors, or doctorate degree and then most likely there is an exam that is taken in order to acquire a license for social work. Based on their level of education, social workers can do things that range from managing a case, placement of patients, and planning on how and when a patient will be discharged. Social workers can also perform counseling and psychotherapy as well. As described in the name, social workers focus mainly on helping the patient to be able to exceed in social environments. Social workers can work in private practices, hospitals, or mental facilities, along with other settings as well. These are just the most common places of work.

The other profession I chose to look at was a psychologist. A doctorate degree is required for this type of profession and there are three different areas of psychology that one can go into: clinical, educational, and counseling or research. Some of the things a psychologist does is give counseling, do testing, and diagnosing mental disorders. Psychologists can work in many settings. These settings may include private practices, hospitals, schools, nursing homes, or mental health institutes.

  3. The first profession I chose to look into was a psychiatrist. Psychiatrists are licensed physicians who are able to prescribe medication and have either a doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathic medicine degree. They provide both medical and psychiatric evaluations, using both medicine and other types of therapy to treat patients. They also treat and monitor psychiatric disorders, which I found really interesting.

The second profession I chose to look at is a social worker. I thought it was interesting to learn that social workers have a variety of education levels, ranging from a Bachelor's degree to a Doctoral degree. They have to be licensed by each state, much like any other medical profession. Social workers manage cases and become involved in a variety of different areas, mental health included. They focus on helping patients function and do well in social enviornments.

I am actually considering working in mental health, but not in one of the professions listed on the NAMI website. I will be (hopefully!) attending graduate school for Occupational Therapy and am interested in learning more about the mental health are of OT.

  4. The first mental health profession I chose was a social worker. Depending on the type of social worker a person chooses to pursue they could either help patients cope with and solve issues within their everyday life or they could work within a clinical setting to help diagnose and treat mental and behavioral issues. Social workers must have at least a bachelor’s degree, but many settings require a master’s degree. Social workers can work in a wide array of settings from clinics and hospitals to schools or private practices.

The second profession I chose was a psychiatric nurse. Psychiatric nurses assess patient needs in regard to mental health and then work with the patient and their family to create and implement plans of care for the patient. They also evaluate the effectiveness of the plan to see if it is working for the patient. Psychiatric nurses are required to be registered nurses which requires either an associate or bachelor’s degree and passing the licensing exam. Psychiatric nurses can work in general or psychiatric hospitals, home health care, private practices, or substance abuse programs.

I do not plan to go exactly into mental health, but as a physical therapist I could be working with individuals suffering from mental illnesses.

  5. The first mental health profession I chose was a psychiatrist. Psychiatrists are physicians with either a doctor of medicine (M.D.) degree or doctor of osteopathy (D.O.), who must also have four additional years of training. Psychiatrists provide medical and psychiatric evaluations, treat psychiatric disorders, provide psychotherapy, and prescribe and monitor medications. Psychiatrists may work in hospitals, specialized psychiatric hospitals, as well as mental health centers.

The second mental health profession I chose was a psychologist. A psychologist has a doctoral degree (Ph.D., Psy. D. or Ed. D.) in clinical, educational, counseling or psychology. They can provide psychological testing, evaluations, treat emotional and behavioral problems and mental disorders, and provide a variety of psychotherapeutic techniques. Psychologists can work in a variety of settings including schools, hospitals, private practices, or mental health centers.

I do not plan to go into mental health.

  6. Social work is a very important profession in the mental health field. With either a Bachelor’s degree or a Master’s degree, social workers can be very helpful with providing a wide range of services. Depending on their degree and education, they can provide case management, assessments, placements, as well as diagnostics and treatment of psychiatric illnesses. Focusing on improving the quality of life and well-being of the individual is a social workers main focus when working with clients.
Licensed professional counselors have obtained a master’s degree in psychology. Licensed professional counselors provide assessments and diagnoses of mental conditions. Additional training along with a master’s degree is required of licensed professional counselors as well as licensing examinations.

  7. I chose to do more research on Psychiatrist and Psychologist
A Psychiatrist is basically a doctor who is specialized in psychiatry. They have a MD or a DO and also have had 4 years extra of specialized training in psychiatry at med school. Psychiatrists are liceinsed as physicians by state but take a national test to be a board certified psychiatrist. A psychiatrist does medical and psychiatric evaluations. Psychiatrists do psychotherapy with people but they can also prescribe drugs to help the individual. They can also diagnose mental illnesses. There are many different sub types of psychiatry. There is forensic, geriatric, cross cultural, emergency, learning disability, neurodevelopmental disorder, and many others. In 2002 37% of fulltime faculty at a medical school where women which was higher than other fields. They can work hospitals, mental health clinics, government offices, and universities.
A psychologist a person who had a doctoral degree in counseling, clinical, educational, or research psychology. They may have a Ph.D, Psy.D, Ed.D. They are qualified to do psychological testing, evaluations, and treat behavioral and emotional problems in individuals. They use psychotherapeutic approaches and cannot prescribe medication. They study the mental functions and behaviors of the brain. They deal with more behavioral issues and developmental issues. They can work as school counselors, in a hospital, with victims of crimes, and many other places.

  8. A licensed counselor works with individuals, families, and groups in treating mental, emotional, and behavioral problems and disorders. Some issues include: depression, anxiety, panic disorders, bipolar disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders, addictions, personality disorders, PTSD, behavior problems, divorce, and grief. To become a licensed professional counselor one must obtain a masters degree in counseling or related area and have two years of supervised postgraduate experience. After that they take a state licensing exam. They may also become certified by the National Board of Certified Counselors. Licensed counselors work in mental health services, chemical dependency centers, vocational rehabilitation, career development, universities and schools, hospitals, prisons, private practices, physician's offices, and residential facilities.
A peer specialist is someone who has progressed in their own recovery of alcohol abuse, drug abuse, or a mental disorder and is willing to assist others with chemical dependency or mental disorders. They can offer expertise that professionals can't due to their experience. Peer specialists can help others articulate goals for recovery, learn and practice new skills, assist in their treatment, and model effective coping techniques and strategies. They go through a training process and receive certification. They can work in mental health facilities, faith based communities, state funded services, community programs, or Department of Veteran Affairs.
I am considering a career in mental health. I am considering going on to graduate school and becoming a counselor for children or becoming a Child Life Specialist.

  9. The two mental health professionals I chose to look into was psychiatrist and social workers. I chose psychiatrist, since my uncle is a child psychiatrist and this way I can really know what he does. A psychiatrist is a licensed physician, but they take a state test to be certified. They have an MD or a DO, in which they also have four more years in specialized training in psychiatry in medical school. They do both medical and psychiatric evaluations. Psychiatrists do psychotherapy with people but they can also prescribe drugs to help the individual, also they can diagnose people with mental disorders. There are many places that they are able to work, government offices schools, mental health clinics, government offices. There are also many different fields of psychiatry they can specialize in.

Social workers have a test they have to pass to be a certified, but they can have a few different types of degrees, such as, their doctorate, associates, or bachelor’s degree. There are many things a social worker can do depending on the training they have received. Though the main focus of a social worker is the comfort, security, and health of the people they are working with. Some of the fields they can work in include, assessments, the placement of clients, working on cases, or even perform counseling and/or psychopathology.

The plan I have for after I graduate in May is eventually going on and receiving my Masters as a Child Life Specialist from Colorado State University

  10. As I had mentioned in my previous blog, when I was in high school, I wanted to get a degree in psychology to become a counselor. I job shadowed a high school guidance counselor and a social worker hoping that I would make my decision between those two occupations. However, my freshman year in college, I decided to switch majors and become a nurse. No matter what my occupation, I have always envisioned helping people for a living. I found he types of mental health professions to be fascinating and am still interested in psychology; therefore, I am planning on minoring in psychology.

    Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse:
Although I am planning to go into hospice nursing, I would also be very interested in becoming a mental health nurse. One of the aspects that I am really excited about for nursing is that there are so many branches of occupations. This is one branch that I haven’t gotten to look into yet. The degrees to become a mental health nurse range, but with my future bachelor’s degree, I could become one. The job description includes the following: mental health nurses work in a variety of settings including the patient’s home or community to help people recover from mental health disorders. The nurse also helps support the family. The salary for this job varies upon the amount of education and if the mental health nurse is specialized in any area. For patients with a mental disorder, most likely 24-hour work is necessary, so shifts are divided between other nurses. One draw back to the job is the level of commitment may interfere with the nurse’s personal life. Various trainings are required to become a mental health nurse.

    Social Worker:
This is also an occupation that I am still very much interested in. My problem is that I would be happy doing just about anything for the rest of my life. However, I would enjoy helping people the most in a hospital setting. The education to become a social worker also varies, and social workers must take an exam to become one. The job description includes the following: social workers work primarily with people that are going through a crisis in their life and need help in order to help themselves. Social workers work in a variety of settings including homes, schools, hospitals, originations, and sectors. The salary for this job varies depending upon where you work. Typically, being a social worker is a full-time job with full-time commitments. This job may be very emotionally draining and often travel is necessary within the work day.

  11. I have chosen Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse and Peer Specialist.
Psychiatric mental health registered nurses help individuals, families, groups, and communities by improving mental health. These specialized nurses process assessments, diagnose and treat patients with disorders or risks for upcoming disorders. Besides disorders, patients may be experiencing addiction, and/or other mental health problems. PMHN varies in degrees, such as a Registered Nurse, Bachelors of Science in Nursing, Masters of Science in Nursing, and a Doctorate in Nursing. This range of education provides psychiatric and mental services to treat and manage psychiatric illnesses or case studies.

Peer Specialist is the second profession that sounded interesting. This profession provides experienced professionals that have gone through certain situations that can relate to their patients. A Peer Specialist may be easier to talk to since they have been in the same shoes as yourself. Even though the context of the situation might not be exactly the same, the specialist is able to understand the individual better than another professional. The support from a person who understands your situation and recovery will help you reach goals, learn new skills, and monitor progress in treatment. Peer Specialist are trained by the government, which will then lead them to receiving a certification

  12. I chose a psychiatrist as my first mental health professional. Psychiatrists are licensed and able to prescribe medication. They are also able to provide both a psychiatric evaluation as well as a medical evaluation. Once diagnosed a psychiatrist is able to treat and monitor a disorder. Next, I chose to look at what a social worker does. This profession allows for a private practice, hospital, mental health facilities and even school settings. There is a wide range of levels for this line of work. Depending on amount of schooling, one can get an associates degree all the way to doctoral level. Social workers council and can administer psychotherapy on clients. Social workers mainly work with patients and their social environments. They work very closely with their patients.Im not planning on working in mental health.

  13. One of the professions I looked at was a licensed professional counselor. To become a licensed professional counselor first they need a master's degree in psychology, counseling, etc.. and have two years of supervised postgraduate experience. Then they are licensed either by the National Board of Certified Counselors or taking the state licensing exam. What a counselor does is work with individuals and families to treat mental, emotional, and behavioral problems. Counselors do this with assessment, diagnosis, and therapy either on an individual level or in a group. Most counselors work in chemical dependency centers, rehabilitation facilities, schools, hospitals, some private practices, and many other places.

Another profession I looked at was social worker. Social workers need to have usually a bachelor's degree, but some states allow as little as an associates or as much as a doctorate degree. All states require social workers be licensed by the state. Based on their degree, social workers can do a variety of things such as managing cases or overseeing discharging of patients. The main focus of a social worker is the comfort, security, and health of the people they are working with. Similar to Counselors, social workers can work in private practices, hospitals, mental facilities, rehabilitation facilities, etc...It is a very versatile profession.

I'm thinking about becoming a Mental Health Counselor, and I'd like to work with children and adolescents. I'm graduating in May, and hoping going on to graduate school to get my Master's in Counseling. I'd looking at more the rehabilitation part of this profession, inpatient facilities, other rehabilitation facilities, but that may change.

  14. The first profession I have chosen is a psychologist. The reason that I chose this is because this is the profession that I plan on going into. A psychologist had to have a doctoral degree in either clinical, educational, counseling, or research psychology. Compared to the other mental health professions, psychologists are the only ones required to have a doctoral degree. As for what they can all do, psychologists can provide psychological evaluations, treat emotional and behavioral problems and mental disorders, and they can provide many psychotherapeutic techniques. Psychologists can work in a wide variety of places such as schools, hospitals, and even correction facilities. Some even branch out and start up their own private practice.

The second profession I have chosen is a licensed professional counselor. The reason that I chose this is because if my first career option would not work out, this would be my second choice. Unlike psychologists, licensed professional counselors only have to have a master’s degree in psychology, counseling, or some other mental health related subject. They can assess and diagnose mental health conditions as well as provide therapy for individuals, families, or other groups. It is most common for licensed professional counselors to work in hospitals or rehabilitation centers and even schools, but it all depends on what they specialize in.

  15. Psychiatrist
Psychiatrists are licensed physicians who specialize in psychiatry. They specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. They are medical doctors who much evaluate patients and determine whether or not their symptoms are the result of a physical illness, a combination of physical and mental, or only a psychiatric disorder. They can also prescribe medication. For education, they need either a doctor of medicine (M.D.) or a doctor of osteopathy (D.O.) and then followed by practice as a psychiatric resident for four years. That is a total of 12 years after high school and then more years for some subspecialties. Psychiatrists work in general and psychiatric hospitals, university medical centers, community agencies, courts, prisons, and nursing homes. There are many subspecialties in psychiatry and some include; clinical neurophysiology, forensic psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, pain medicine, and sleep medicine. They can also specialize in helping certain age groups.

    Social Worker
A social worker is a professional and academic discipline that seeks to improve the quality of life and well-being of an individual, group, or community by intervening through research, policy, crisis intervention community organizing, direct practice, and teaching on behalf of those afflicted with poverty or any real or perceived social injustices. They usually provide case management, inpatient discharge planning services, placement services, and providing assessment and treatment of psychiatric illnesses. The education with being a social worker begins with a Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Social Work, but they can also obtain a master’s degree or a doctoral degree. In most states, they must take an examination to be licensed to practice social work. Over about 50% of social workers are employed by local authorities and many are represented by UNISON. Social workers can work in mental health clinics, schools, hospitals, and private practices.

  16. The first profession that I chose was a psychologist. I chose this because I am planning to go to graduate school to become one. A psychologist studies the mind and behavior. There are many types of psychologists such as applied, research, and mental health. The area that I am interested in is Clinical Psychology. This requires a doctorate degree along with a year of clinical experience. The work settings among all of these different areas can differ greatly. Many people confuse a psychologist and a psychiatrist. The difference is the educational background. Psychiatrist has a degree is medicine and a psychologist has a doctorate in psychology.

The second profession that I chose was a peer specialist. This is a person who has gone through their own recovery from drugs and alcohol or a mental illness and wants to self-identify as a peer. They want to help people and because of their life experiences can offer expertise that a professional could not duplicate. They often help with making goals for recovery, learning new skills, monitor their progress, assist them in their treatment, and show them good coping techniques. To become a peer specialist, there are different trainings and certification requirements.

My plan is to get my PsyD in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in health psychology so that I will be able to work in hospitals.

  17. I chose to look more at a Social Worker. There are different types of social workers although the general things they do are to improve people’s lives in social environments. If you are direct-social worker, you generally address everyday problems like finding a job. However, if you are a clinical social worker, then focus on mental health problems. You can be a social worker with a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree. You also have a take a test at some point to be licensed to practice social work. You can work in a variety of places and your level of education can play a factor. Most social workers work in government agencies, schools, nonprofits, hospitals, and private practices. Being a social worker can also be very stressful and emotional.

I also chose to look at a Psychologist. To be a psychologist you must obtain your doctoral degree. Psychologists help treat emotional and behavioral problems as well as mental disorders. They do this be doing psychological tests, evaluations, and provide their techniques to help care for the patient. They focus on brain and mental functions along with the acts that often accompany them. However, they can’t prescribe any medication to patients. Most psychologists work hospitals, schools, mental health care facilities, private practices, and often work with victims.

  18. Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse
The first profession I chose to look at was a psychiatric/mental health nurse. Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurses develop a diagnosis, plan of care, implement their plan of care, and evaluate the effectiveness of the care provided to the patient. Psychiatric/mental health nurses have a few options for their education programs such as an associates or bachelor’s degree followed by passing the licensing exam or pursuing a master’s or doctorate degree. Psychiatric/mental health nurses can work in substance abuse programs, home health care, general or psychiatric hospitals, or private practices.

    Licensed Professional Counselors
The second profession I chose to look at was a licensed professional counselor. Licensed professional counselors provide assessment and diagnosis of mental health conditions along with providing therapies such as individual, family, or group therapy. Licensed professional counselors obtain a master’s degree in psychology, counseling, or other mental health related fields usually followed by two years of supervised post-graduate experience. Licensed professional counselors are licensed by individual states and may also be certified by the National Board of Certified Counselors. Licensed professional counselors can work as school counselors, business counselors, or private practitioners.

I do not plan on going into mental health.

  19. I chose to do research on a clinical mental health counselor and psychologist. These two professions interest me because this is the path I am currently trying to pursue. A clinical mental health counselor needs to get either their MA or MS in MH counseling to be able to work as a mental health counselor. Depending on the state, there are different requirements for a graduate to complete before they can be considered a licensed mental health counselor. These professionals are known to treat mental health issues. They may work in private practices, mental health clinics, hospitals, etc.
Psychologists have to go to school and get other their PHD or PSYD in order to practice. Most psychologists are not allowed to prescribe medicine, however there are a couple states with an exception as long as the psychologist gets certified. Psychologists can have a variety of expertise, so it depends truly on what the individual studies while in graduate school. Some psychologists may focus primarily on therapy with individuals, however some psychologists may be more interested in research. They may work in a variety of settings including private practice, clinics, schools, etc.

  20. The first profession I chose was a psychologist. A psychologist needs a doctoral degree in either clinical, educational, counseling, or research psychology. They are also licensed by certain states to practice. Psychologists can do a variety of things with their level of education. They can do psychological testing, evaluations, treat emotional and behavioral problems and mental disorders, and they can also provide a variety of psychotherapeutic techniques. It all just depends on which area they get their doctorates in. Some psychologists can go for the more clinical approach, some can do only research, they can be a professor with their education degree, or they can be a counselor.
The second profession I chose is a social worker. A social worker can work in the field with a bachelors degree. They can also have a masters or doctoral and they would be able to do more in the field with either of those. A social worker with a bachelors degree can provide services like case management, placement services and a variety of other things. A social worker with a higher level of education can provide all of the above but also provide assessments and treatment of psychiatric illnesses.

  21. Psychiatrist: Psychiatrists are doctors and osteopathic specialists that provide mental health services to patients. They can prescribe medication. Most psychiatrists work in hospitals or in private clinics. There are several specialties in psychiatry and each psychiatrist must go through at least four years of residency after achieving doctorate (M.D.) or osteopathic (D.O.) degrees.
Social Worker: A social workers range of service is based on their level of education and certification. These mental health professionals help people with a wide range of issues: psychological, financial, health, relationship, and even substance abuse problems. Social workers can specialize in certain areas, such as helping children, assisting individuals with life-threatening problems, and overcoming addictions. Half of social workers work in hospitals, mental health clinics, and private practices while another three are employed by government agencies at the state and local levels.
At this point I am not pursuing a career in mental health, but I have always been interested. I may yet try to get into grad school for psychology.

  22. The first profession I chose that interested me was a class favorite, the psychiatrist. I’ve always been more interested in psychiatry than psychology or psychotherapy as I feel it’s more hands on and clientele based rather than scientific and evaluatory. Psychiatrists are physicians of medicine with a doctorate of medicine or osteopathy which allows them to administer drugs. They provide medical and psychiatric evaluations to clients, treat psychiatric disorders, provide some psychotherapy and prescribe and monitor medications. Psychiatry also has several specialized sections that provide easier and more qualified help to be administered.

The other profession I chose was a licensed professional counselor. As fun as the higher education of psychology is and the great jobs it provides, I still prefer small time counselors and therapy to any clinical jobs that I’ve seen. It seems a more personal and intimate experience with good results, given the professional is good at their job. Licensed professional counselors have a master’s degree (either in arts or sciences) in psychology, counseling, or any other mental health related fields and typically have two years of supervised post-graduate experience.

Honestly, psychology is my back up plan. I’ve always been interested in the field of mental health, particularly that of therapy and counseling, especially being exposed to it at such a young age with my mother working this type of job. I don’t plan on going into the mental health field, but if I were to join, I would like to be a therapist of some kind, so more than like a Licensed Professional Counselor.

  23. The first mental health profession I chose was Social Worker. For education they either have a bachelors degree ( B.A., B.s. or B.S.W.), a master’s degree (M.A., M.S., M.S.W. or M.S.S.W), or a doctoral degree (D.S.W. or Ph.D.). In most state you will need to be licensed and the degree of that license will depend on the depth of your education. Direct-service social workers deal with peoples day to day living needs including case management, and placement services. Clinical social workers diagnose and treat mental and emotional problems with patience’s. They can work at mental health clinics, schools, private practices, and for the state. State social workers deal a lot with abused and neglected children.

The second mental health profession I have chosen is Peer Specialists. I had not heard of this until now. Peer Specialist do not have any sort of prior training but they have recovered from the addiction or illness themselves and can provide first person knowledge of what you are going through. They may have to be certified and these regulations vary from state to state. They could work at mental health clinics, hospitals, or recovery centers.

I am not planning on going into mental health.

  24. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who works to diagnose, treat, and prevent mental disorders and illnesses. After completing medical school, they must then partake in an internship, or receive some other type of specialized training. They have the ability to write prescriptions, as opposed to psychologists, because of their medical school training. they tend to have specializations in specific areas, and can be certified through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

A Psychologist has either a PhD, PsyD, or EdD in psychology. They must complete graduate school after receiving their undergraduate degree, which focuses on evaluating and treating mental, emotional, personality, and mood disorders, among others. After grad school, they go on to complete an internship for further improvement and application in theory, behavioral therapy, and treatment methods. They go on to counsel patients and partake in psychotherapy.

As much as I would love to get further training in med school, it just doesn't seem to be in the cards for me. As of now, my plans are to work as a school psychologist, where (at least in my home state,) you can work while studying to get your masters within five years of being employed. From there, I would decide whether to continue working with children in schools, or, after receiving my degree, moving on to psychotherapy and adult counseling. I'll cross that bridge when I get there :)

  25. The first profession I chose to research was a social worker. A social workers services depends on their education and what they are certified to do. Most social workers obtain either a bachelors or a masters degree. Social workers help a wide variety of people in a wide variety of settings. Social workers can help individuals with psychological, relationship, and financial issues (as well as a variety of other issues). Social workers can specialize in working with certain populations (i.e. children) or in certain settings (i.e. mental hospital).
The second profession I chose to research is a psychologist. A psychologist needs to earn their doctorate in a given area of psychology. Along with earning their doctorate, they also need to be certified and licensed within the state they are working. Psychologists do not usually prescribe medicine, but work directly through therapy. Along with therapy, psychologists can help do research. Psychologists can work if a variety of settings such as: hospitals and private practices.
Personally, I am not going into mental health. I am going to school for Speech-Language Pathology, but am minoring in psychology. It's important I have an understand of psychology and it's various professions as I may be working with psychologists, social workers, and other professionals in regards cases I may be assigned too.

  26. This blog has really helped me in understanding the differences between all of the mental health fields. The first career I would most likely enjoy working in would be a psychologist. I would earn my Ed.D in counseling in order to do so. Psychologists are licensed to provide evaluations for both emotional and behavioral problems, mental disorders being one of them. There are places all over the country, and all over the world for that matter, that could allow me to pursue this dream.
The second career choice would to become a Licensed Professional Counselor. Like in becoming a psychologist, I would need to earn my Masters in counseling and also work under supervision during my post-graduate experience. They are licensed to provide assessment and diagnose patients of mental health conditions. I would be able to choose from a wide variety of locations for this profession, as well.
