Implicit Association Test

A hot topic in Social Psychology right now is prejudice, which is covered in Chapter 7 of our textbook. In addition, the Implicit Association Test is a very popular way to test one's prejudice, and is also briefly discussed in the text.

Should you choose to complete this blog for course credit, please complete the following:
  • Define prejudice.
  • What is the Implicit Association Test (IAT)?  In other words, what does it measure?
  • Visit this website and take one of the listed IATs.  You have several options to choose from, but you just need to complete one.  They take about 10 minutes or so.
  • Although you don't need to share your results as it can at times make people uncomfortable, I do want you to discuss your experience taking the test and whether you believe your results were fairly accurate.

  1. Prejudice is described as being a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience as defined by dictionary.com. The Implicit Association Test is an experiment that is designed to measure the strengths of automatic association between mental objects of memory. It measures the ability for someone to associate one thing to another whether that be by a positive or negative association.
After taking this test, I feel as though the results were fairly accurate but it really opened my eyes to what I was associating with good and bad with relation to cultural groups. The questions that were asked made me feel slightly uncomfortable but really made me analyze my initial thought process. The matching faces with good or bad terms was quite challenging especially when faced with very minimal time. It didn't give me enough time to second guess anything. It was my first initial reaction that gave the correct response. I think this test made me realize that I need to expand on my ability to be culturally competent even if I don't realize that I have a preference towards white or black people. I think we all have that hidden prejudice that we are unaware of but it does not become derogatory until we act upon it. Once that happens, then the conditions will change and become disrespectful.

  2. Prejudice is a negative attitude or belief toward members of a group. It is a preconceived notion or opinion about a group that is not necessarily accurate because it is not based on reason or actual experience. An Implicit Association Test (IAT) is an experiment that is designed to measure the strength of a person’s association between concepts. It measures the both positive and negative associations within one’s mind. It helps make prejudices more apparent because as humans we are more likely to associate positive stimuli with our in-group and negative stimuli with the out-group.

I took an IAT from the website provided and found the results to questionable. I understood what they were doing when the test was being conducted; however, I believe I developed a different association between the objects and the people other than the association the test was searching for. I did my Implicit Association Test on how race (black or white) is associated with weapons. The pictures of violent weapons were darker in color than those items that were harmless so it was easier to relate African Americans with the violent weapons simply due to the color resemblance. I actually chose to take this IAT because I was curious what it would say about me. I absolutely hate violence and the three things I am deathly afraid of are guns, knives, and fire so I thought it would be interesting to see if the results portrayed a more stereotypical view. I honestly do not trust anyone with weapons regardless of their race, age, education level, etc. and am aware that weapons are everywhere. Based on the previous two beliefs, I would have to say these results were slightly flawed.

    1. Interesting observation (the weapons being a darker color). I can definitely see how that would bias results.

  3. Prejudice is to have negative attitudes and stereotyped beliefs about members of a group.
The implicit association test is designed to detect the strength of a person's automatic association between mental representations of objects in memory. Implicit attitudes and stereotypes are measured.
The implicit association test I took was quite eye opening. Appearance and race can have a lot to do with initial judgement is what I took from this. What you're comfortable around and used to being around, exposure probably has a lot to do with the results of this test. I was shocked with some of the things that were asked, but my initial judgement shocked me as well. The results were quite accurate in my opinion. Going into a helping field, I believe more diversity is needed in my life. Exposure to all kinds of races might be smart to help with my stereotypes developed from growing up in a small rural town.

    1. Rural towns are great to grow up in, but they definitely don't give you much experience with diversity, unfortunately!

  4. Prejudice is when you display a negative attitude towards members of a specific group. The implicit-association test is a measure within social psychology that detects the strength of someone's automatic association between mental representations of objects or concepts in memory. So really it measures your unconscious feelings towards certain things.

My results to the IAT didn't surprise me too much. I took the test that shows association between males and career and females and family. I have taken an IAT before and know how it works. I think that the way I was brought up and what I know about the past shows through in my answers. It says that my data suggest a strong association of Male with Career and Female with Family compared to Female with Career and Male with Family. I don't necessarily think that a man or a woman belongs at work or in the home more than the other one, but I do think that a man would prefer to be working. Sometimes I feel like a lot of females find it to be a luxury to be able to have a husband financially stable enough that she can stay home and not work. I, however, do not intend on not working; I can't imagine not having a career when I get older. I'd say that my results show what society says. It doesn't show my opinion, but rather my knowledge and observation of the world around me I'd say.

  5. Prejudice is when a person makes a decision, either positive or negative, about a person or thing before knowing the relevant facts. It usually refers to an unfounded belief about something. The IAT is a test designed to measure the strength of a person's association between mental representation of concepts in memory. Taking the IAT was an interesting experience. I knew what I was suppose to do, what the “correct” answer was, and they kept switching the variables back and forth around the screen in order to trip me up and try and get why my unconscious thinking was I guess. It really just made my brain not like what was happening and I experienced some cognitive dissonance. It made me pretty uncomfortable to associate those things with myself. I'd click one of the variables, realize what I'd done, and then be like “wait, no, I want to take it back.” I do think the results were accurate though at the end.

  6. Prejudice is the preconceived negative judgment that is made about a group of individuals. The IAT is a test that measures the associations that people make with certain pictures or objects based on their memory. When taking the test, I felt kind of awkward because of the subject that it covered. I was curious as to what the results would be for me and I found that they were pretty accurate to what I thought I would be. When taking the tests I found it hard to feel "strongly" about certain attitudes that I had to either agree or not agree with. I found myself being more unsure and in the middle when asked about the subjects. The "I" and "E" keys were interesting to me because I haven't seen testing like that before. I think that they helped with the accuracy of the test because it shows how much you associate certain words with pictures.

  7. Prejudice is when you have an opinion about a certain person or group of people and you judge them by association instead of by their personality. The Implicit Association Test measures what one associates objects or people in a positive or negative light. You have to complete the test as fast as you can so then you don’t have time to think about the task, resulting in your first instincts instead of trying to make it sound like you aren’t bias or prejudice. When I took the test I wasn’t really thinking about what my results were going to be, but when I saw them it really made me aware of something that I wasn’t seeing for myself. Seeing the results made me think about my actions and I actually agree with what it had to say. I didn’t always agree upon putting bad words with a certain image, which made the activity a little challenging. I don’t completely agree with the results of my IAT, but there is some truth in them. Maybe I’m being prejudice right now by I’m not completely agreeing and saying my answers weren’t reflected properly, but I beg to differ.

  8. Prejudice is a negative opinion a person has about someone or a group of people that is not based on reason or actual experiences. The Implicit Association Test (IAT) is designed to test the automatic association between mental objects in memory. It measures the positive and negative associations to that person. A person is more likely to put positive associations towards in-group and negative associations towards out-group, this helps to clarify the prejudice.
After doing the implicit association test I found it to be quite eye opening. I was shocked at some of the questions that they made us answer, and it really made me think on how I feel. I feel that I have had a lot of association with diversity and that may have helped me become who I am today. I certainly do believe that having more diversity in ones live does open a whole new horizon in your life and your perspective on life. I feel that the results of the test that I took were quite accurate and shows that a little diversity in one’s life can open up your eyes.

  9. I would define prejudice as having an unfavorable opinion or feeling without any knowledge or reasoning. The Implicit Association Test is an experimental method designed to measure the strength oof automatic association between mental represntations of concepts in memory. The task of taking thetest was kind of strenuous because it asked some questions that made no sense at all. I think that some of the answers can apply to anything depending on the context of the situation. I would have to say that I disagree with the results I got because the test was based on timing and response and I think most of my answers were solely based on my timing because I was confused on how the whole test was supposed to go and I think that the test should also give the option having an equal viewpoint to each of the races. I wouldn't say it is scaled properly, let's say you accidently put a BAD with only one Stimuli/face does that mean you prefer a whole race compared to the other race?

  10. Prejudice is defined as an opinion that isn’t based on experience or reason, it is a prejudgment.

The implicit association test is a test that measures the strength of a person’s automatic association between representations of objects, subjects or feelings. It can be measured over an array of different topics.

The results I received on the IAT test were what I would have guessed them to be, so I like to think that they were accurate. I have taken some IAT tests before for another class, so I knew how they worked. I took the test to see if I associate more with happiness or sadness. I am usually a happy person, so I kind of knew what the results would be, but it was still kind of stressful waiting to see what it was going to tell me. Thankfully though it assured me I’m just as happy as I thought I was.

  11. Prejudice is having a negative belief or notion about somebody or a group of people because of preconceived idea about that person or group. Many times the thoughts are inaccurate. The Implicit Association Tests are designed to test people’s automatic associations between mental representations of objects in memory.

I found the IAT to be a little confusing at first, even though I did read the instructions. These tests involve a lot of quick thinking because clicking the right letter on the keyboard does not seem like a difficult task, but when you have to match the letter up to the correct word, it is more difficult than you would think. Even after I did understand the instructions, I got going and I still missed a few because it was difficult to quickly think if the word means the same or opposite of the words you were looking for. I do believe that the results were fairly accurate with how I portray myself, but I am not sure this would be the only test I would use when judging prejudices.

  12. A prejudice is a biased opinion about someone’s character based on an unwarranted assumption or stereotype. The Implicit Association Test measures someone’s automatic association between objects. The idea is that with this test you can measure how their brain automatically processes this association (or lack thereof) without having a chance to think about or monitor their answer. I took an IAT to see if I implicitly associated myself with being more calm or anxious. The answer really surprised me in a way. I was told that I associate myself as being significantly more calm than anxious. I guess inside I think I can handle more than I usually give myself credit for. I thought I would find I was more associating myself with being anxious because I think of myself as being a very stressed person, which I associated with creating anxiety. However, when I really think about myself, I can handle a lot and have a great capability of remaining calm in a wide variety of situations, something my unconscious must be aware of. It’s very interesting to see what your automatic association is, whether it is true or not.

    1. I also now took an IAT to see if I had any automatic association between Female/Male and Science. the results showed that I have no association between female/male and liberal arts/science, which I think is accurate. As a female who is getting a major in both biology and psychology, I think it's obvious enough that I would not associate science with male and liberal arts with female or vice versa.

While I was taking the test, I couldn’t stop thinking of what these questions are really saying about me. It was very interesting to me to see the questions that they were using to figure this out. Pushing the buttons seemed really weird to me. My results were kind of accurate but it had my race at the bottom of all races, which is kind of weird to see.

The implicate association test is a test that measures the strength of a persons automatic association between mental representations of objects in that persons memory. When taking the test I wondered why they had us do a word association. When it came to the questions I thought about myself as a person and determined that I do not have a alcohol problem, which I do not believe I do as the test suggest I do not either.

  15. Prejudice is the act of holding preconceived notions of a group of people.
The Implicit Association Test measures how much control one has over his or her conscious mind. I took the Alcohol Brief Implicit Association Test. The test asked me to look at a list of words and then hit a key on my computer whenever one of the words on the list flashed on my screen. I did this a total of six times before being asked demographic information. According to this test, I tend to identify more with “abstaining” than “drinking.”
I believe the results were somewhat accurate. I usually only drink socially, and have cut back on drinking since I’ve been in school due to a demanding class schedule. I no longer have the time to nurse hangovers and get behind on my homework. Good grades are more important to me now because I hope to get into graduate school someday.

  16. Prejudice is a negative attitude towards members of a certain group. Prejudice is different than discrimination because prejudice does not involve an actual behavior but just one’s attitude. The implicit association test is a way to test one’s prejudice. It measures one’s attitudes and beliefs about certain topics. In other words, the test measures one’s nonconscious prejudices. The test is given by seeing how fast people associate words with certain concepts or stereotypes or evaluations.
I took the IAT test from the website. My results were that I showed no bias or preference over gay or straight people. I consider myself to be a straight person however I do have a member of my family who is not straight. I think that this could have affected some of my categorization because I know that she is just the same as the rest of us. I found some of the questions to be a little uncomfortable and raised some questions in my mind. I do not know why the questions about being a parent had anything to do with being gay or straight. I feel very strongly on the fact that gay people can raise children just as well as straight people can. I think that the discrimination against this topic is wrong. That is the only part of the test that really stuck out to me. Doing the matching between good and bad and gay and straight I found to be quite easy for me. I did mess up a few times when they switched the words around but I think that was due to repetition not based on the fact that I think gay people are horrifying haha! I think that my results were very accurate because I do not have a problem with people being gay or straight.

  17. Prejudice is the preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. Usually prejudice people are judgmental and tend not to look at perspectives from other peoples side. An implicit association test (IAT) is designed to detect the strength of a person’s automatic association with representation of objects or concepts in memory. This test can tell researchers how memories can influence a patient’s attitudes and behavior to different things. This test makes participants decide on groupings very quickly with reduces the amount of thinking to deeply. I took the test about gender and careers. According to my test I group males to careers and females to family more. I don’t exactly agree with this test. I do believe that our culture likes females to family more than males. You don’t see too many men staying home to take care of the children and the woman working. I think that males and females can have an equal part in careers and family. I also think that females should do what they would like if that means focusing on a career rather than a family.

  18. I define prejudice as a biased opinion of others that is preconceived and negative. An Implicit Association Test is a social psychology test that measures the strength of automatic associations one has with a concept in an indirect way. IAT’s measure your first, basic reaction to a stimulus to see whether you subconsciously favor one side or the other. I took a test on gender and majors. After the test, it said I “strongly association of Males with Science and Females with Liberal Arts.” Which is true. Just from personal experiences, when I am taking my liberal arts classes there is a far higher proportion of women to men, opposed to my science classes. I am a business major and many or my classes are roughly 7 guys to 3 girls. But this Psychology class has roughly 2 guys to 8 girls. I think the test has the potential to be accurate, but it is easily manipulated. I believe I would answer the question the same way with or without the test. The test is interesting but I don’t think it is very beneficial when taken online. If it were distributed by a professional with more stress on the topic, then I think it would be more reaction based.

  19. Being prejudice means having a negative attitude involving other people or group. For example having a bad attitude toward another race or homosexuals could be classified as being prejudice. The Implicit Association Test is looking at how strong your automatic association between mental representations of objects in memory.
After taking the test on the supplied website, I was a little surprised with how I answered some questions. I have always been a positive person but a few questions caught me off guard and I doubted my instant answers. I ended up agreeing with my results but I almost want to share this website with some of my friends to see if they felt the same way!

  20. Prejudice is when your previously made up opinion on an issue(s), person(s), topic(s) is based on no actual facts or reason. The Implicit Association Test (IAT) is an experiment designed to measure the association between your mental images of concepts based on memory.

My experience with the IAT test was a little weird. I read through the instructions but still did not know what to expect. For the test I took, I figured the questions would be a little different. During the test though, I could almost predict what my results were going to be. When pushing the buttons, it was hard because they kept switching everything. It took a lot of concentration. My results for this test are what I expected them to be. For the test I took, I am slightly prejudice, which I knew before going into it. I do not consider myself prejudice though, just on that topic, if that makes sense.

  21. I believe prejudice to be when someone judges a person that is different from him or herself. Prejudice is not actually based on their experiences, but rather on assumptions. One way to measure your prejudices would be through an Implicit Association Test, which shows your subconscious thoughts.

I choose to take an Implicit Association Test on weight preferences, since many studies show that Americans have a growing obesity problem. This test showed several images of underweight, normal, and overweight individuals. The instructions told you whether to press “I” or “E” for which image showed. It also instructed to press “I” for good words, such as pleasant, joy, heaven, happy, smile, wonderful, ect. Overall, I believe that the results were pretty accurate. I was mainly curious to find out if I had a preference, because I do not believe that I do. However, my results show that I indeed have a preference of which weight class I not only associate myself with. The Implicit Association Test was quite interesting, and I would definitely be interested in finding out my other implicit thoughts.

  22. Prejudice is defined as the negative opinion of a group or person that is based on know actual evidence. The IAT is designed to detect the strength of a person's automatic association between mental representations of objects (concepts) in memory. The IAT test that I took was interesting, I had no clue what to expect because I have never taken one before. Before hand I did consider myself to be prejudice, and the test did support that theory. The way I see it, everyone is prejudice about some things and I did not expect this test to tell me any different. That being said I believe the results were fairly accurate.

my experience with the IAT was interesting, I tried to hide the fact I had a known slight prejudice in that concept to the test and myself but it managed to pull out the truth. I felt the test had a pretty clever method of approach associating pictures and words with positive and negative connotations proved to be hard to defeat and the outcome was humbling.

  25. A prejudice is a preconceived opinion about something that is not based on anything; it has no basis or fact behind it. The Implicit Association Test measures the strength of automatic associations that people have. I did the test and I thought that it was very strange what they had me do in the beginning, I think they were trying to see if it would make me more anxious or not, but I had to click the letter i if the word that popped up matched the two words on the screen and I had to press the letter e if it did not match. I had to do 6 rounds of that with the words changing somewhat each time and then it asked me some basic information about myself and my mental health status. At the end of the test my results came back and they said that I moderately identify more with calm than with anxious. But I don’t think a test can accurately compute the amount of anxiety someone may be going through at any given time. Maybe if I was put under a huge amount of pressure or something before I took the test, I would have been more anxious which would have changed the results. Overall it was a very interesting test.

  26. Prejudice is when you have a negative belief or feelings to a certain person or a certain group. The IAT is made to measure the beliefs and thoughts towards different people and groups that person might not want to admit or think about. I took the Gay-Straight people IAT and my results didn't surprise me a lot. What was really on my mind the whole time was there were some really negative answers to the IAT and it made me think of how much a person could strongly hate gay or straight people.

The tests seemed very interesting, however for this exercise I chose a simpler one than some of my classmates, focusing on the self-esteem test as I thought it tied in nicely with earlier chapters. I wasn’t overly surprised as I do think I’m very content with myself as a person, I have improvements to make like anyone but overall I’m very content and that showed through my results. The test was a bit odd in its direction, the visual portion of it wasn’t very clear to me in the beginning the exercise was simple enough, I’m not entirely sure how the visual aspect pertained to thinking positively or negatively about one’s self, though.

Essentially it measures your unconscious feelings towards certain things. My results on the IAT didn’t surprise me very much. 30. If you are prejudice towards something or someone you have pre developed negative thoughts towards it. The IAT is a test to measure your implicit memory strength with your word association. I went on the website and took the anxious or calm test. My results were that I was more anxious then calm. While I do agree with the results I think there can be a lot of error with the tests. I have taken similarly designed tests. I think these tests can have a lot of error because it is really easy to answer the way you want to be scored. The questions are really easy to predict what answer goes with what result therefore you can very easily get the results you want.

  31. Prejudice is a negative attitude about an individual or group of people that is often but not always expressed through words or actions. Prejudice is often based on specific characteristics such as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religious preference. One way that someone could find out their internal possibly unknown to them prejudice is through an implicit association test. This is a test that uses peoples snap reactions to test their true “prejudices”. I did the race implicit association test and it found that I have a slight preference to European nationalities versus African American. I can understand that as I haven’ had much exposure with the African American population but at the same time I was never taught to be prejudice.

  32. Prejudice is when you judge somebody for no apparent reason. You have no facts about a person, but yet you have a negative feeling and attitude towards them. You may judge somebody based on a group they are in/associated with instead of who they are as a person. The IAT is a test that measures your implicit memory strength in regards to word associations you make. It measures individuals unconscious feelings towards various topics. I found the results of the IAT to be pretty accurate. It stated that I was more calm that I was anxious, which is how I too would perceive myself. I can see how the test would be helpful in certain situations for certain individuals. I think I will retake the test at a time where I am feeling different that I currently am so see how my results may or may not differ.
