Week 11 of 14...almost there!
Part 1:
Chapter 11 discusses the topic of gender. Among the many topics discussed, is the issue of gender stereotypes. I thought this week we'd do something a little more fun and find some comics that illustrate gender stereotypes. Or, if you want to get creative and/or are into the new Bitstrips fad (or are otherwise creative), go ahead and make a comic illustrating a gender stereotype.
- What is a gender stereotype?
- What are some disadvantages to gender stereotypes?
- Find three comics (or make, or a mix of the two).
- Describe the gender stereotype in each of the comics you choose. You can just provide a link to the comic.
Part 2:
As in the previous weeks, please respond to any 2 existing blog posts (not including this one or posts that you have responded to previously) to get credit for you "blog comments." Each post has its own instructions to follow in regard to commenting. Note: Replying to other students' comments on blog posts does not count toward your grade, although I encourage you to engage in conversation with your colleagues.

A gender stereotype is some belief about how males or females should carry themselves and what hobbies they partake in parallel. These are supposed to line up with societal norms. For examples, males are supposed to portray themselves as masculine. Masculine males usually like cars, hunting, and sports. They usually have big muscles and never cry. Females are supposed to carry themselves as more needy and fragile. They are supposed to dress nicely and be skinny. Typical hobbies that women perform are shopping, cooking, and cleaning. Gender roles can be positive by encouraging balance in modern society and intimate relationships between a man and a woman. However, I believe that is where the advantages of gender stereotypes end. I believe that there are many times people that don’t quite fit their gender role can feel isolated. For example, I am not the type of girl that wants to go shopping for clothes every weekend. I would rater be hunting, driving my sports car fast, fishing, camping, snowboarding, racing, snowmobiling, watching football, playing sports, sweating at the gym, and the list goes on and on. This doesn’t make me any less of a girl. It just makes me different. I still enjoy wearing makeup, looking nice and put together. I just don’t think that people should be pushed to conform to what society believes is a one size fits all.
I gathered three comic strips (two from the first website and one from the second website). The gender stereotype in the first comic was that males can’t cook as well as females. The gender stereotype in the second comic was that women should be perfect skinny hour glass figures. It also portrayed that fat on men is not seen negatively and is even sometimes seen as a good thing. The last gender stereotype is that women spend way too much time and money shopping, whereas men are more careful with their financial decisions.
A gender stereotype is the general idea that there are generalizations about specific gender roles, differences, and attributes. There are many negative aspects of gender stereotyping such as making snap judgments, immediate expectations for that individual, doubting ones abilities, or simply thinking less or more of someone based simply on their gender.
ReplyDeleteThe first comic strip that I found was one of a little girl and a little boy holding out their piggy bank. Their mom was going to reward them for their hard work. After the mom gave them each their money, the little girl turned around saying no fair he got paid more and the little boy replied welcome to life. While this cartoon was very short and straightforward, their is research out there that shows women can work the exact same occupation as a man and still get paid less just for the simple aspect of her gender. Statistics have shown that for every one dollar a man makes, the women only gets paid eighty cents compared to his one dollar for doing the exact same thing. Gender roles definitely played a huge role in this comic strip. http://uncommonground962.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/20130430-153412.jpg
My second comic strip is a man and a woman in the kitchen. The man proceeds to say he thinks his wife is getting a little round. She pokes his fat and says well whats this and he proceeds to say that men look okay with a little extra weight . The wife proceeds to say that there's no justice in a world where a woman can get fat and a man just gets love rolls. I think this comic strip is emphasizing the idea that when women gain weight it looks bad but when men gain weight then that's okay. This aspect has no psychological sense to it. Its just an assumption that this man makes to say that women are just a step below the power of men. We can't do what they can do. http://feministallies.blogspot.com/2008/01/tuesday-gender-in-comics-stereotypes.html
My final comic strip is that of Beetle Bailey. A gentleman comes in and states that Miss Bailey is in the hospital and the secretary says that they will need to keep her there for one more night of observation. The secretary walks into Miss Baileys room and there stands a room full of men staring at her while the secretary shouts, okay that's enough observation for the day! I found this comic rather humerus because it analyzes the male view of women. One could read it as the female is looked upon to be a sex object for the male observation especially with her being in a hospital bed where the only clothing one usually wears is a hospital gown, with an opening in the back. The comic also emphasizes the men's fascination with just simply staring at her while she sleeps. http://emily9988.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/beetle-bailey1.gif?w=600&h=175
Gender stereotypes are generalized beliefs or feelings about males or females. The disadvantages of gender stereotyping are that deviations from the "norm" can be discriminated against, expectations of oneself creating stress, and a lowered self-esteem from not meeting these expectations. However bad these negative effects of gender stereotyping are, there will always be a general look, behavior, and attitude that each gender will hold. Traditionally, women are more emotional and attracted to the color pink. Men, on the other hand, are more activity based, as discussed in class with their friendships, dirt and physical labor are traditionally things men are interested in.
ReplyDeletehttp://playfairtoys.tumblr.com/post/48616390087/love-this-comic-by-saturday-morning-breakfast
This first comic shows that boys like to do things with their hands and build. They're interested in physical activities more so. Girls are more interested in cutesy things. Subsequently, there are less women in the engineering field where work is more hands on.
http://icantbelieveitsalawblog.tumblr.com/post/64153841688/robot-hugs-interpretation-x-i-have-this
The second comic I found includes a man trying to figure out what his girlfriend meant in a text and his friend points out gender essentialism isn't real and that men aren't allowed to have emotions because of this world that men's words are seen as frivolous and inconsequential. His friend is saying that men and women aren't so different after all.
http://genderroles.tumblr.com/image/18697606000
This last comic is a picture of a man at what's presumably a psychologist office. The man is stating his manhood is threatened because a woman beat him to the position he wanted at work. This goes to prove the gender stereotyping that believes men to be the bread winners at home. Men believe earning more than women, even their wives, is vital to their "manhood".
Gender stereotyping has come for a long history of inequality between women and men. Gender stereotyping are just the noticeable differences between women and men that is true for a some of the overall population but does not apply to everyone. Society (mostly men) have gotten a last better 25 years by acknowledging that women are capable of handling many of the same jobs that men can do. The biggest disadvantage for gender stereotypes in the field of law enforcement is the lack of trust. The stereotype is women who are on the forces are not strong and would not be able to cover her partner in a time of need. Other factors are just a lack of communication and understanding, it could be an easy way out, and it is easy to blame someone just because of their gender.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.nadinemoawad.com/tag/gender-stereotyping/ This is a short comic that talks about how men view same and opposite sex. When men looking at another men struggling with something, this example is math, it is just him struggling. But when the men see the women struggling he automatically assumes that all female “suck at math because of this one female struggling”
http://www.cartoonstock.com/directory/g/gender_stereotypes.asp This page has a few different comics on it. One of them look at the stereotype that women are bad drivers. In this comic the man says to the women “I’m not denying that you can drive, but it’s mainly INTO things!” I think the real stereotype men have this belief that women cannot make a good decision and are to timid to make a good driver. 3) The third cartoon is about another very common stereotype, talking about the women place is in the kitchen. This stereotype comes from a long history of women staying home and doing most of the work at home while the man goes off and makes the money and then comes back home and relaxes. This cartoon show the women mowing the lawn as the male is laying on a hammock. And this caption says “Stop complaining- at least it keeps you out of the kitchen” This stereotype is more of a joke now but just a few years ago the idea of spending almost all of their time in the kitchen was still very true. But now as women are working and doing many of the same things that men do this idea of sharing duties of the house become more prevalent.
Gender stereotyping is when people have a preconceived notion of the role of a gender. It’s usually the first thing that pops into peoples’ minds true or not. Disadvantages to gender stereotyping are that they can be degrading, and hurtful. They can also hold someone back from an opportunity such as a job or experience.

This cartoon stereotypes woman as always being in the kitchen. It could also be taken as the man is allowing her to be out of the kitchen and doing something else which shows that the man has power.
https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&docid=tSi_vCXK_EDSHM&tbnid=Nw3HL4HCU14jvM:&ved=0CAUQjRw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.patheos.com%2Fblogs%2Fnakedpastor%2F2013%2F04%2Fwomen-leaders-we-apparently-need-to-avoid%2F&ei=HY5xUvjUHIOSyAGn1oGoDw&bvm=bv.55617003,d.aWc&psig=AFQjCNExj4YwsoEPob2SPe7-hg0kavox_Q&ust=1383259663527901
This cartoon is saying a lot of stuff. First of all its stereotyping men to always be the leader. Also it’s saying that men are viewed as more professional then women. It is stereotyping working women. It is saying that if she’s in a high profile job she must be a flirt, diva, flake, feminist, she has a victim mentality.
http://elsevierconnect.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Brain-gender-slide.jpg
This comic is stereotyping women to like chocolate, musicals and sitcoms. Have bad hair days and maternal urges and weddings. Also have mystery moods and behaviors. Men are stereotyped to mainly think about sex, movies with explosions and babes, and ball sports. Also showing that the listening, and commitment part of a guy’s brain is small.
Gender stereotyping is the discrimination between gender and what roles supposedly "come" with that gender. It is the preconceived idea of what a certain gender does. For example, males are preconceived as the ones who have the hard business job, coach the football team, go fishing and do all the outdoorsy things, and do all of the manly repairs around the house. Women are seen as the ones who cook, clean, go to school functions, do the household chores, and take care of the children during the day. Some disadvantages to gender stereotyping are that it can make some people think that they have to fulfill the preconceived image instead of branching out and being different. If the person does not conform to those norms, they may feel like they are not fulfilling their roles and that may make them self-conscious or out of the loop from other people who do follow the actions of the typical norms of gender stereotyping. These aspects of not following the certain gender stereotype may lead others to judge you and think of you differently.
ReplyDeletehttp://feministallies.blogspot.com/2008/01/tuesday-gender-in-comics-stereotypes.html
In this comic, the son's mother is sick so the dad has to cook dinner for the night. Because the mom normally cooks dinner, the boy is surprised that his dad is able to do the task that night. It was believed by the son that the moms are the ones who always cook dinner which shows that the gender stereotype of a woman is that they are the ones that do the cooking for the family.
http://carlislehistory.dickinson.edu/?page_id=215
In this comic, there is a gender line that says "do not cross" at a nurse station. On one side of the line are female nurses and on the opposite side is a male that is unsure of crossing the line. This is showing that the gender stereotype of nurses is that most of the time people view nurses as being women.
http://feministallies.blogspot.com/2008/01/tuesday-gender-in-comics-stereotypes.html
This comic shows a woman putting away the dishes and the man telling her that she is looking more round. The woman then comes back and says that he looks like he's gained weight and he tries to cover it up and say it looks better when a man puts on a little bit of weight. This is showing the gender stereotype of women and men and their weight and how different genders see that aspect.
Gender stereotypes are widely shared beliefs about males and females abilities, personality traits, and social behavior. These are the social norms on how we are supposed to act as a male or female. There will always be negative aspect to gender stereotyping that each gender hold. For example men are supposed to be tough and only like playing sports and for women we are were told to take care of the house and kids and supposed to act all girly. Other then being tough or being a housewife there are so many other stereotypes about how we are supposed to act as male and female, when in reality we can act and like things that we want.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.raoandpierce.com/decoupling/?p=1452
In this comic, it shows a lady with a mop in her hands who look likes she has been cleaning all day. Above her head says "I;m so tired of being a lazy housewife, I think I'll go get a job." This is a very typical stereotype for women. But these days there are many women who do have jobs but still come home and be that housewife, and are the ones doings a lot of work at home.
http://toobusythinkingboutcomics.blogspot.com/2011/01/love-honor-dignity-decency-compassion.html
In the comic above it shows two guys that have a lot of muscles. There are talking about someone weeping. This is stereotypical of guys need to be tough and have the biggest muscles. And it seems that guys always act all tough when around other guys, thinking they can beat up anyone in their way.
http://lgbtvoices.blogspot.com/2011/08/gender-rolls.html
In the comic above it shows a little boy playing with dolls and a little girl playing with a dump truck. The comic has no words but says it all. When we were growing up girls were always given the dolls to play with because they are supposed to be mothers when they grow up and take care of the babies. And boys were always given truck and cars to play with because boys are supposed to be tough and be outside. Boys are taught to do the outside work with playing with the trucks.
Gender stereotypes are widely held beliefs about males or females regarding their abilities, personality traits, and/or social behavior (Weiten, p. 339). Stereotypes in general are not necessarily true of all individuals who belong to the category being judged. Another disadvantage of gender stereotyping is that in recent years the boundaries between male and female stereotypes have become less distinct. Ever since females began fighting for gender equality their roles have been more aligned to that of the men. With that being said, female stereotypes still tend to be more insulting while males’ stereotypes are more complimentary. Men are generalized as being masculine and dominant, which is seen as a desirable trait to possess. On the other hand, women are stereotyped as being high-maintenance, needy, and controlling. The major problem with stereotypes in general is that they can affect your perceptions and expectations of others and may even cause you to develop a confirmation bias towards individuals based on their group affiliation.
ReplyDeletehttp://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?p=2262
This comic is based on the female stereotype that women talk far more than necessary, while men rely only on a shortened version, or summary, if you will. This comic also shows how men have the stereotype of not being very patient or interested in petty conversation. The man’s response in the last box shows how men typically only listen to parts of what is being said. In essence, men are simple creatures and women are complicated.
http://feministallies.blogspot.com/2008/01/tuesday-gender-in-comics-stereotypes.html
The comic I chose from this page is titled “MmmmMm…Canned Soup and Waffles…” The stereotype being presented in this comic is an insult against both men and women. It depicts that men are unable to cook, but it also could relate to the old-fashioned stereotype that it is a woman’s job to do all of the cooking.
http://comicsalliance.com/comic-strip-shocker-women-still-marginalized/
The last comic I chose shows the stereotype that women are high maintenance and loose with their money. It also makes apparent the behavior stereotype of how much females enjoy shopping. Not all of these stereotypes are true of all women, but I’m sure each of us can relate to or have heard comments regarding these beliefs.
Key Words:
Gender Stereotypes
Personality Traits
Social Behaviors
Perceptions
Expectations
Confirmation Bias
A gender stereotype are widely shared beliefs of men and women of how they should behave, act, appear, and some of their abilities. Some disadvantages of a gender stereotype are that everyone needs to fit the characteristics of the stereotype, when in reality most people don’t. For example, most people represent the prototypic American as white, middle classed, heterosexual and Christian. But in our society today that is not always the case. Another disadvantage is snap judgments. These can occur because before it was seen that men were seen as the leader and strong person, leaving the women to be weak. However, this is not true today since many woman are becoming leaders themselves and holding themselves strong just like a man. This can be seen against the norm as well. Men have always been the head of the family or relationship but that is not always the case with homosexuals. With the many changes in our society today it is important to not make snap judgments on a person’s relationship because you may not always know the situation. It is also important to keep an open mind towards others different situations.

http://feministallies.blogspot.com/2008/01/tuesday-gender-in-comics-stereotypes.html
I used two comic strips from one website and one comic strip from another site. The first gender stereotype was displayed by a man on a couch drinking a beer relaxing, while the woman was in the background ironing. She burned the clothing item and the man said, “Hm…very smart.” This is portraying that women are seen doing the domestic work in the house while the men are relaxing from their long day of work and they don’t really appreciate the work that is being done by the women.
The second comic strip that displays a gender stereotype is when a man comments on a women’s stomach being big. She points out that he has some fat on him and he comments that it is okay for men to have fat. This is portraying the stereotype that men like their women to have the “Hour glass” figure. Finally the third comic strip that can be found on the same website as the second one, shows the different interests between men and women. A man is reading his newspaper and the women notices a sale at a store. She slips the coupon from the paper that the man was reading and heads to the store. This shows that men would rather sit quietly and read while women would rather shop and get a discount at a store.
A gender stereotype is discrimination or prejudice based on the person's gender. Most often there is gender stereotyping against females. Gender stereotyping often includes unfair treatment, negative attitudes, and/or negative behaviors.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.google.com/search?q=gender+stereotype+comics&tbm
This comic shows two different pictures. The first shows two males up at a chalk board doing math. One of the males says to the other, "Wow, you stuck at math." The second pictures shows one male and one female at the chalk board doing math. The males says to the female, "Wow, girls suck at math." There is often negative attitudes against females and math. In the first picture the male uses the word "you". Just implying that just him not all males suck at math. However in the second picture, the male says "girls" suck at math. Implying that all girls suck at math. This gender stereotype is not always true. There are some females that are bad at math but there are also females that are very good at math. There are also some males that are very bad at math and some that are good at math.
www.tgboards.com
The second comic I found show a pregnant female at the doctor's office getting an ultrasound. The father seems to be standing next to the female who is laying on the table. The doctor is looking for the sex of the baby. The ultrasound photo shows a baby holding up a magazine that says "shoe sale." So the doctor says, "It's a girl." This is also a negative stereotype against females. This comic is implying that all females are obsessed with shoes. Some females are not obsessed with shoes and some are. Some males are obsessed with shoes, while some aren't.
maximumble.thebookofbiff.com
The third comic shows three different pictures. The first picture shows a man #1 holding a baby. Another man #2 says to him, “Dude, what are you doing? You can’t give your son a baby doll. That’s a girl’s toy!” The other man #1 says, “Huh? Why?” In the second picture, the second male #2 says, “You know… When he grows up he might be… you know…” The first male #1 says, “Might be what?” Then, the third picture shows male number one saying, “A dad?” This is a negative stereotype about males. Many people think that if males play with baby dolls when they are younger they will grow up to be gay.
Some negative disadvantages from gender stereotypes are that it can negatively effect a persons self-esteem and self-image. This can also effect a child's development. These stereotypes can also effect a person in school and in their jobs. There are also stereotypes dealing with sports. There are male sports and female sports. Males aren't allowed to participate in female sports and vice versa. Or if they do they are looked down upon.
Gender stereotype is a generalization for either females or males. These stereotypes are usually incorrect judgments towards an individual or group. If a gender stereotype is applied, people try to find evidence little actions or words people express. Disadvantages of gender stereotypes are that they are usually inaccurate and place certain roles for genders. For example, a male is stereotyped to hold in his emotions and feelings. This is a disadvantage because men could be viewed as homosexuals, like talked about in class material. This is an awful view for men not to act on their emotions because of a male stereotype.

All of my comics are Bicstrips I created. This first one comic illustrates an older lady hitting a gentleman with her car. The male is explaining how it is acceptable that he is being hit by a car because a woman driver is behind the wheel. The lady overseeing the situation has a disgusted face because of the man’s stereotypical comment. There is a stereotype that women are bad drivers. In my opinion, not to offend anyone, but this is probably due to how our minds work. Men have one-track minds, whereas women are good multitasks. Good multitasks may have a harder time focusing on traffic and the road because they have other things going on in their mind.
https://scontent-a-sjc.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/q71/s720x720/1394345_10151667922892000_2034249792_n.jpg
In this Bitstrip, the male is excited that he is home alone. He is unaware of his wife hiding behind the table watching him. The male has food and beverages all over the kitchen. The gender stereotype is that women are the house keepers, whereas men are the yard keepers. Since the man thinks that the woman is gone, he finds that it is okay to make a mess in the house. The sickened emotion on the woman’s face exemplifies how messy males can be.
https://scontent-a-sjc.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/q71/s720x720/923010_10151667943402000_1937564255_n.jpg
My last Bitstrip, shows a man working in his office while a women sits in front of his desk as if it were an interview. The woman asks why so many men work within the company. The man has a discouraging face, as if she should already know the answer. This gender stereotype exemplifies that men are supposed to be in the work place making money for the family, where women are supposed to be at home taking care of the house and children.
It's also interesting to note the size of the two characters...you can see that the man looks larger and more of power, relative to the woman who looks small and more feeble.
DeleteVery creative!
Gender stereotypes are widely held beliefs about males and females regarding their abilities, how they behave, and their personality traits. Most gender stereotypes are often about women. One disadvantage of gender stereotypes are that not all stereotypes are necessarily true. Another disadvantage of gender stereotypes are that it places certain roles on genders that may have been true in the past, but they are not necessarily true anymore.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.cartoonstock.com/directory/g/gender_stereotypes.asp
The first comic that I found is of a man and a woman driving in a car. They are arguing back and forth as the man says "I'm not denying that you can't drive, but it's mainly into things." The man in this comic is implying that his wife can't drive as well as he can. Men saying that women are not able to drive is a well-known gender stereotype.
http://feministallies.blogspot.com/2008/01/tuesday-gender-in-comics-stereotypes.html
The second comic that I found is a father explaining to his son that he will be cooking dinner tonight because his mother is sick. The son replies with "You can cook?" The stereotype here is that the women do all of the cooking in the household and that since men never have to do the cooking, it means that they don't know how to.
http://feministallies.blogspot.com/2008/01/tuesday-gender-in-comics-stereotypes.html
The third comic that I found is of a man and a woman. The man is telling the woman that she is getting a little round. The woman replies and says, "Oh, yeah? And what do you call this stuff?" The man replies and says, "That's different, on men, a little extra weight looks ok." The stereotype in this comic is that all women are supposed to be skinny, and if they are not then they don't fit in with the norm. On the other hand, it is ok if men have a little extra weight because it makes them look more manly.
Key Words: Gender stereotypes, personality traits, norms, perceptions
A gender stereotype is a generalization of attributes, social norms and behavior of a man or woman. These generalizations could be positive, or negative but most of the time they do not portray accurate information about people. Some stereotypes are that men are aggressive, bread winners, and handymen whereas women are cooks, cleaners and sympathetic. The disadvantage to these stereotypes is that when a man or a woman doesn’t live up to these stereotypes, they’re looked down upon and thought to have something wrong with them and it is sometimes hard for individuals to break these stereotypes. For example, if a woman makes more money than her husband, her husband is taught to feel inadequate and less than his wife, but if the husband makes more money than his wife, there is no second thought about it.
ReplyDeletehttp://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?p=2262
My first comic strip illustrates the stereotype that women talk a lot but don’t really say anything. The women is telling a story but her words come out all jumbled up, but when the man says it the other man understands what was said. So it also kind of illustrates that men and women speak different languages and we can’t understand each other.

This comic illustrates the stereotype that men make more money than women do. Studies do show that men tend to make more money on a woman’s dollar but this isn’t always the case, which goes back to what I said before about that if a man isn’t making more money than his wife, he’s taught that he is less than her. However, if a man makes more money than his wife, she’s supposed to be okay with that.

My final comic illustrates he stereotype that women are meant to be in the kitchen, to cook for their men. This comic also illustrates the objectifying we do to each other as women and men. In this particular comic, the men are objectifying the woman to being just a body to look at, women do this to men as well.
Key terms: Stereotype, gender, gender roles, objectify, perception
A gender stereotype is prejudice or discrimination against a person’s gender. These stereotypes can be based off of traditional gender roles especially when involving women. The stereotypes include how a specific gender should act, behave, and present themselves to others. These stereotypes can be brought upon a group of people or just an individual. Some disadvantages of stereotypes include the fact that they are not true, and the fact that they are extremely biased. The stereotypes are not equal among both genders. Females face harsher stereotypes regarding their work occupation, appearance, or personality while men are being stereotyped in a more positive way according to their masculinity. Another disadvantage is that these stereotypes can sometimes be so strong that people strongly believe that they have to live up to these expectations that society puts on them and this can add a lot of stress.

The third cartoon from the top is a picture of a woman sitting at a desk. She is the CEO of a company and when she answers the phone she is saying, “No this is not Mel’s secretary, this is Mel.” This cartoon is definitely showing a gender stereotype towards women in the workforce. It is presenting the idea that society does not feel like women can have as high status jobs as men do and furthermore be good at them. This happens a lot. Women are even paid less than men in the workforce which I believe is due to the stereotypes.

This is a series of comics that present somewhat of a story. They show gender stereotypes because they are displaying what a typical woman and man act and behave and even dress like according to these stereotypes. The woman is dressed in a short skirt and little tank top and high heels. The man is sometimes seen in a professional looking suit or a tank top to show off his muscles. The man is drinking and having fun with friends while the woman is lounging in the sun and being very feminine. She is also doing the household chores like ironing and shopping and he is just sitting on the couch watching TV. I think this comic plays into the traditional stereotype that men work more while the women of the house tend to do the house chores.

This comic is of a little boy and his dad trying to cook dinner without mom because she is sick. The little boy talks about how his mom told him that his dad definitely can’t cook anything but frozen meals. This is a gender stereotype on the idea that women are better in the kitchen do more around the house. I have found this to be an extremely false stereotype because I know a lot of men who are actually really really good cooks and even better cooks than some of the women. My friend’s dad is a way better cook than his mom.
A gender stereotype is a set of social and behavioral norms that are generally considered appropriate for either a man or a woman in a social or interpersonal relationship. An example for a gender stereotype is that all women are awesome at cooking. I believe that many gender stereotypes can be positive and may even have been formed from our evolutionary past. One gender stereotype that is positive is a male having masculine characteristics such as hunting, fishing, and being the “breadwinner.” The advantage of this stereotype is the male is attempting to live up to this stereotype, which then allows them to achieve higher goals. This is also a positive stereotype because women try to disprove this stereotype, which in turn, results in them trying harder and making a better living. The disadvantages to this stereotype include: The male will have lower self-esteem if he does not succeed in trying to achieve this goal, and the women may feel that they do not have to try because no matter what the male will always make more money.
ReplyDeleteI found three comic, the first is how women are supposed to be in kitchen all the time and have to do what men say (http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://grantingrandom.files.wordpress.com/2012/11/woman-cook1.jpg&imgrefurl=http://grantingrandom.wordpress.com/&h=375&w=382&sz=44&tbnid=Q_CjExxH2iQngM:&tbnh=104&tbnw=106&zoom=1&usg=__tMbxLSNUC9TWRCyrlDp1TCaxMH0=&docid=4FnpoRLgRkVcXM&sa=X&ei=QaB2Uo2fBqKDiwLRwIDADQ&ved=0CD8Q9QEwAw) . The second is, the second is about how men cannot cook, and when women are not around all we eat are waffles and canned soup. (http://feministallies.blogspot.com/2008/01/tuesday-gender-in-comics-stereotypes.html). The third is a comic is regarding the stereotype that men are supposed to do the manual labor while women are supposed to have the easy office jobs (http://uncommonground962.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/20130430-151711.jpg)
Gender stereotypes could also be referred to as sexism. Both terms refer to the discrimination of a person or group of people based on their sex, male or female.
ReplyDeleteAdvantage Male Stereotypes: One positive aspect that stereotypes have created would be that men are viewed as the hero, always there to save the day and get the girl. Batman, Spiderman, Superman, Thor, Green Arrow, Beast, Hercules, Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, Mr. Incredible, and countless other superheroes are always who comes to mind when people think of someone to rescue the day. All of these superheroes are men—strong stereotyped men. This comic demonstrates how the man saves the day and gets the girl: http://cartoonsnap.blogspot.com/2009/02/untamed-frazetta-best-drawn-1950s.html .
Disadvantage Male Stereotypes: One disadvantage that gender stereotypes have created is that men cannot cry or show any emotions. According to stereotypes, men are supposed to hold in their emotions and “grow up” (as shown in the comic below). http://ifanboy.com/articles/go-hug-a-comic-book-artist/
Advantage Female Stereotypes: One advantage that stereotypes do for women would be that they seem to be the helping ones. According to stereotypes, women always seem to be the ones that do the listening and try to be helpful to others. Women are portrayed to be the natural helpers. Although most comics of women are highly sexualized, this comic demonstrates that women are helpers. http://talkingcomicbooks.com/2012/05/wanted-women-in-comics-podcast-guest/
Disadvantage Female Stereotypes: One disadvantage for females regarding stereotypes is the generalization that women are weak and highly sensitive or emotional. I even consider myself to be defying this stereotype, because I am not the most affectionate person and therefore, consider myself to be insensitive about rather emotional topics sometimes. This comic is from the movie “Kick A**,” in which the young girl literally kicks butt and is the toughest of them all. She is a cold killer and even kills her father at the end of the movie to end his suffering. She sheds one tear and is back to kicking butt. http://comicsbeat.com/interview-john-romita-jr-on-career-planning-kick-ass-and-rape-scenes/
The terms I used include the following: sexualized (sex appeal), gender stereotypes, positive, negative, helpers, emotion, and gender.
Deletegreat job seeing both advantages and disadvantage sin comic strips!
DeleteGender stereotypes are a set of social and behavioral norms that are generally considered appropriate for either a man or a woman in a social or interpersonal relationship. Some of the negatives to gender stereotypes is that it may cause one gender or the other to be limited in job status or family life. An example is when a man wants to stay at home and take care of the kids, while his wife works. This can cause him to be ridiculed by his friends, neighbors, and even family members. For women, it could be that a women wants to be a mechanic, but that’s a “man’s job” so she is constantly put down and could even be denied a job. Though, females do face more negativity from gender stereotypes and it can cause them more problems in the work force and also in athletics. Many times, women are seen as the weaker, slower, or less motivated to succeed in sports. Gender stereotypes affect both men and women, but in different ways and with different severities.

DeleteA gender stereotype is a widely shared belief about the abilities, personality traits, and social behavior of males and females. Some disadvantages to gender stereotypes are snap judgements being made, conflict in relationships and expectations in a partner, normative influence or conformity, prejudice, etc.
ReplyDeleteThe first comic I found made me giggle, because it's kind of true. This supports the idea that women don't tell men what they're doing wrong when they're doing it wrong and expect them to figure it out on their own. http://www.thecomicstrips.com/store/add.php?iid=102190
This comic supports the stereotype I first heard from my biology teacher in high school, who said she doesn't understand physics because physics was for boy brains. http://www.thecomicstrips.com/store/add.php?iid=101426
This comic supports the stereotype that the woman always wears the pants in the relationship. http://www.thecomicstrips.com/store/add.php?iid=100299
Key terms used: snap judgements, normative influence, conformity, prejudice
A gender stereotype deals with male and female roles in society. The stereotypes that are placed on gender specific roles. These have been formed over time and are known in many aspects of cultures all over the world. Main ones that I think of are that a woman’s place is in the kitchen and doing the chores. Another big idea is colors in clothing for men and women, such as pink. These stereotypes could possibly be compared to microaggressions. Older people especially are really strict and conservative so gender stereotypes could possibly be a cause of microaggression. Although these are not racial issues they slight prejudices. Interpersonal relationships and cohabitation could also cause disputes aroused from gender roles and stereotypes. Disadvantages to gender stereotyping could be related to school, work, and many social situations. Some jobs could be more likely to hire you for being a certain gender. Schools and the grading process have their own gender biases. As for social situations there are many aspects of live such as men bring the bread winners, women doing the cleaning, exedra. The first comic deals with the stereotype that women don’t work and do the household chores and take care of the children. The second comic also shows a double standard. Men expect woman to stay in shape and look good but find it okay to put on weight. Finally the last comic is emphasizing that men can’t cook and that woman’s place is in the kitchen.

Gender stereotypes are common misconceptions about either men or women. They state how men and women should behave in society. These social norms are usually vast over generalizations. Some typical stereotypes of women are they are poor drivers, they are responsible for the cooking and the cleaning and they should be emotional. Stereotypes of men include portraying masculinity, showing no emotion, completing outside work, unable to put together outfits, and drive large vehicles. There are numerous negatives to gender stereotypes. They can put individuals at a large disadvantage because they feel pressure to match the stereotype. When these gender stereotypes are enforced, it can force individuals to conform, even if they would not normally display these traits. These stereotypes also encourage gender inequality.
I found three comic strips from the sites listened above. The first one displays the stereotype that men are unable to cook. I can attest from personal experience that this is not the case. I know a lot of men who can cook better than I can, and I can cook fairly well. The second comic strip portrays the double standard of outward appearance. In our society, it is perfectly acceptable for men to gain a little weight. In some cases it is even preferred. Women, on the other hand, are expected to maintain a think physique. Gaining even a little weight is cause for ridicule. This places a great deal of unnecessary pressure on women to be fit and “perfect” in the eyes of society. The third strip shows a little boy and a little girl getting paid for cleaning their rooms. The little boy gets paid more. This reinforces the fact that men typically get paid more money than their female counterparts.
Gender stereotypes are misconceptions about male and female abilities and behaviors that are usually held by many people. Gender stereotypes can lead to conflicts in relationships because of unrealistic expectations such as women do all of the housework. Gender stereotypes can also lead people to make snap judgments about people based on his/her gender. The final disadvantage of gender stereotypes is that because these judgments become the norm, individuals start to conform to the stereotype even though it is negative. They use the stereotype as an excuse for their behavior or personality traits instead of owning up to the behavior.
ReplyDeletehttp://uncommonground962.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/20130430-151711.jpg
The first comic I choose is based on the gender stereotype of careers. The comic shows two individuals one male and one female. The female is going against the common gender stereotype that women belong in the office and is working as a construction worker. The male is confused by her choice in jobs and is questioning where he is going to work since she is working in a "male" dominated field. She replies that the hospital will need a secretary once it is finished, which is kind of making fun of the guy because there are not many male secretaries out there.
http://comicsalliance.com/comic-strip-shocker-women-still-marginalized/
The second comic I choose plays into two female gender stereotypes. The first stereotype is that women like to shop a lot and do not know when to quit. The lady had to make a promise to her husband that she would not shop anymore, when in reality many women do like to shop, but they also know how to live within their means and many times are buying things for their family. The second stereotype portrayed in this comic is that women have little common sense. After the woman makes her promise not to shop, she still goes out and buys a purse to put all the money she will save, but in reality she will not save money if she keeps spending it on stuff to hold the money she will save.
http://www.fbtb.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=7084
The final comic I chose for gender stereotypes portrays how Legos are for boys and not girls. Lego created a line of Legos that are specifically designed for girls by making the people look like girls and using colors such as pinks and purples, but in the comic the original Lego is upset by the "new Lego girls" because Legos are supposed to be for boys and not girls. In reality even though Legos were geared towards boys, many girls still enjoyed playing with them and since Legos is expanding to include girls, many more girls will likely enjoy Legos even more.
A gender stereotype is the assumption that there are specific attitudes and/or behaviors that are considered only male or only female. There are a lot of problems with such stereotypes. They are harmful in the way that men who tend to be more creative or soft spoken are seen as being more feminine, which can elicit insults from other men. These quieter and more creative types might try to hide their talents or act in a way completely different from who they want to be. These men may try to do “manly” things they really don’t want to do just to be accepted by their peers. This also happens for females. If girls aren’t feminine or stand up for themselves, they are often called names and are seen negatively. Women who are more outspoken tend to be viewed negatively, especially in the work place. Gender stereotypes are holding society back because they can keep people from doing or being who and what they want.

This comic shows a conversation between a father and his son. The father says that he will be making dinner because the mother is sick and the son says he didn’t know that his father could cook. This clearly displays the classic “men can’t cook” stereotype. This reminded me of mid-twentieth century housewives being the ones who always prepared meals. I think that some men can’t cook because they’ve never had to, which I observed when reading this comic. I also believe that this is something that will virtually disappear in coming years because men are starting to take on more household responsibilities, including cooking. I also believe that men are encouraged to cook more for themselves because people are generally marrying later and they can’t pass cooking on to anyone else. Hot pockets and cereal get pretty old after awhile.
http://feministallies.blogspot.com/2008/01/tuesday-gender-in-comics-stereotypes.html
This comic shows a man pointing out that a woman has gained a little weight. She turns around and pokes him and basically says that he has, too. The man outright says that a little extra weight does not look bad on a man. I can’t believe that a comic like this was actually published. This emphasizes the stereotype that women should always look good in the way society wants, which is often skinny and unnaturally beautiful. What women forget is that these beautiful images we see in the media are heavily Photoshopped. Men, on the other hand, can gain a little weight and not get criticized. I believe that this holds because men still make more than women and their jobs are still seen as being more important.
http://carlislehistory.dickinson.edu/?page_id=215
This comic shows a few female nurses standing behind some tape that says “gender line, do not cross.” There is a male nurse standing on the other side of it, looking down at the tape with a confused face. This comic reflects the stereotype of only women being nurses. Nursing is often seen as a females-only field because it is more of a caregiving, nurturing career. Women have been expected to take care of people for centuries. Men in the medical field are assumed to aspire to be doctors. This is expected because becoming a doctor requires more schooling and is seen as more prestigious than being a nurse. Male nurses are often looked down upon for wanting to take on a “female” job.
Gender Stereotypes are generalizations about gender attributes, differences, and roles of individuals or groups. They rarely communicate accurate information. Some negative aspects of gender stereotypes are making snap judgments, immediate expectations for that individual, doubting ones abilities, or simply thinking less or more of someone based simply on their gender.
ReplyDeleteThe first comic strip that I found is about a dad telling his son that he is going to make dinner because mom is sick. The little boy is in shock that his dad can cook because his mom always told him stories about how his dad lived off frozen waffles before meeting his mom. This is gender stereotyping because the belief that only woman can cook stems from people attributing it to woman. http://feministallies.blogspot.com/2008/01/tuesday-gender-in-comics-stereotypes.html
The second comic strip that I found is of a woman driving with her husband in the passenger seat. He is criticizing her driving and hinting that she often times runs into things. This is a stereotype towards women because a characteristic that women have today is that we cannot drive. Of course that is not the truth for all women. http://www.cartoonstock.com/directory/g/gender_stereotypes.asp
The third comic strip that I found is of a couple. The man tells the woman that she is becoming a little round. She then pokes his fat and asks what the difference is. He responds by saying that men are allowed to have a little extra weight. This is an example of gender stereotyping because women are expected to keep thin while men aren’t expected to care. http://feministallies.blogspot.com/2008/01/tuesday-gender-in-comics-stereotypes.html

As how I would define gender stereotypes, gender stereotypes are 'labels' put on a certain gender simply because they are part of that gender. This goes for all stereotypes but they are often misconceptions. For example, a common stereotype for females would be females are bad drivers. Now, I could defensive because I like to think of myself as a pretty decent driver, but that is not the point. The point is, men and women have a similar driving abilities. According to a brief paragraph I read (http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1300/J074v15n04_02#.UnbwwM1DGT0)
there is difference between men and women when it comes to overall driving. Although, women do tend to be less risky when it comes to driving after a few drinks and as they grow older women seem to end their daily driving sooner.
Back to my original point, stereotypes can often be wrong. But they can often be right. A disadvantage to gender stereotypes could be that people are judged based off their gender. In my comics I found online most of them had to do with women not working outside of the home and men being masculine and sexual. One comic was getting at how women are "suppose" to be lighter drinkers and "gentle". Whereas men, it doesn't matter. It also showed how women can basically flirt their way into drinking underage, whereas men cannot.
Gender stereotyping is when people have preconceived ideas about a person just because of their gender. How men are protectors and really strong as opposed to women who are the caretakers of the home and spend all day in the kitchen. Some disadvantages of gender stereotyping are that someone doesn’t really know the other, because they are making judgments based on whether you are a man or a woman. The most common stereotype I hear is how I must be really good at making sandwiches due to me being a woman. These stereotypes probably came from a time where women really didn’t have a voice in anything and had to be stay at home moms. Men were always the breadwinners and brought home the bacon as the wife cleaned all day and took care of the children. Now times have changed and there are even stay at home dads. I’m sure that there are some hard-core believers in the stereotypes on gender, such as men in the work place not taking a woman seriously because she “doesn’t belong there.” Luckily that isn’t so much of an issue anymore with all of these women coming into leadership positions. I am even the station manager for the university’s radio station and I’ve heard people say it’s a man’s business. Gender stereotypes aren’t primarily for women; some men do suffer from disadvantages as well. Some men probably can’t uphold to the protector status that they are made out to be.

This first comic has the stereotype of girls loving shopping and how it takes forever when you go. It also shows how much boys hate shopping. Granted those are probably true, but they aren’t true for everyone. The girl said after she went shopping that it only took seven hours as if it was a short period of time. That’s exaggerating the time it actually takes for a girl to go shopping and still act like they have a bunch of energy or look like she could’ve shopped for an additional seven hours.

This is a gender stereotype of how women should be paid less than men when the same amount of work is done. It has a little boy and girl who cleaned their room and their reward is money. The boy gets paid more and told the little girl welcome to life.
http://feministallies.blogspot.com/2008/01/tuesday-gender-in-comics-stereotypes.html
This last link actually has three different comics and they all have a gender stereotype in them, but I’ll just talk about the first one. The first one has the stereotype of how men can’t cook. It’s a boy and his father having to make their own supper because the wife is sick. There’s a joke made about how he can only make canned soup and frozen waffles and frozen waffles is what the father makes. Most men are capable of making more substantial meals than just frozen dinners.
Key Terms: stereotype, gender roles, perception, prejudice
A gender stereotype is a set of norms that are typical for men or women. When someone breaks out of these roles it is "unusual". Women are suppose to be the homemaker where they stay home in the kitchen and tend to the children. When women started getting jobs it caused problems. Men are supposed to be the provider and be masculine.

The Disney princesses are a great example of gender stereotypes. All the girls are "saved" by a prince because of their beauty. The boy saves the girl for no reason besides of their looks.

This is an example of how women are helpless without men. They need men to survive because they are weak.

My last comic shows a man trying to care for child. Men arent suppose to care for children, thats the womens job.
What are some disadvantages of gender stereotypes?
DeleteGender stereotype is a simplistic generalizations about the gender attributes, differences, and roles of individuals and/or groups of a specific gender. Some disadvantages to gender stereotypes include snap judgments, high and unrealistic expectations of the opposite sex, and doubting the abilities of each gender.
ReplyDeleteThe first comic strip that I found is from the Zits comic. It has Sara, Jeremy's girlfriend, and she is asking if he likes her boots. However, he cannot focus on or say the word "boots" because he is too busy staring at Sara's butt. This comic shows that all guys care about is a women's butt as in this comic or a women's breasts.
http://differenttogether.wordpress.com/category/comics/page/2/ (the Dec. 31 Zits comic)
The second comic I found was another Zits comic. This one focused on the female stereotype. The girl is supposed to be telling a story but to Jeremy her words are all mushed together and he cannot understand a word she is saying. However, it is cleared up what the girl is talking about when her boyfriend says "What she means is, we made out."

Key words: snap judgment, stereotype
A gender stereotype is a simplistic generalization about a gender’s attributes, differences, and roles of that specific gender. These generalizations usually provide inaccurate information about the gender that it is portraying. For example a very common stereotype for women is that they are supposed to be caring, get married, and have children that they take care of. An example of a common stereotype for men is that they are strong, they are the financial support of a family, and they are assertive. While for some these characteristics and traits may prove true for that gender, there are times when they are not true. While gender stereotypes can be positive assumptions or generalizations, there are also disadvantages to gender stereotyping. Gender stereotyping may cause people to feel as if they need to fulfill certain expectations in order to fit in. People that may not fit these expectations may feel as if they don’t belong. These stereotypes may also cause people to view people who deviate from these roles in a negative light, leading to discrimination. The three cartoons that I found about gender stereotypes are listed below:
ReplyDeleteThis first cartoon portrays a pretty well known gender stereotype against women by showing how women should be the caretakers or the maid. I frequently hear jokes being made about how women should be in the kitchen.

This third cartoon shows how there are specific roles that society believes men should uphold, and how when they don’t meet those roles they are portrayed as different.
https://www.google.com/search?q=gender+stereotype+cartoons&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=sCN3Uq77I4bJiwKakYBA&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1366&bih=667#facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=rJQDMzfFakvzKM%3A%3BbBvEHm94YwaleM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.momscleanairforce.org%252Ffiles%252F2012%252F01%252FLEGO-cartoonbranded.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.momscleanairforce.org%252F2012%252F01%252F17%252Flego-land%252F%3B580%3B435
Gender stereotype is a prejudice view towards a specific sex. Furthermore, it is specific ideas or views about a gender. An example of this is that woman is bad drivers. However, statistically men get in more car accidents. That’s why their insurance is generally so much higher. I believe that some disadvantages to gender stereotypes could be demoralizing people as well as well as decreased rights. For instance, women get paid less than men as a whole. Women who are in “prime birthing years” can be looked over for jobs. This is because employers can’t afford to let a woman take nine months off. Furthermore, men are assumed to know everything about mechanics and pluming. These are just a few disadvantages we deal with when discussing gender stereotypes. All though there may be some truth to a stereotype, it may not be true in every male or female.

In this comic, men are assumed to not know anything about cooking. A man is asking his wife what to do once the water is boiling. This is obviously not true, for all men. This comic defines all men to be awful cooks.

The third comic is two men trying to decipher the gender of a cat. They then make the cat parallel park. The joke is that if It was female cat it couldn’t park the car. However, there is no proof that women are worse drivers. In fact, men’s insurance is generally higher because of their dangerous driving.
Key terms: sterotype, gender, gender roles, perception, emotion, positive, negative
Gender stereotypes are a belief or and idea of how a male or female should act. There are many disadvantages to gender stereotypes which can include people acting like they think they should according to these stereotypes so that they do not stand out. Another disadvantage is the snap judgments that some may make on a person that is not following these "ideal" gender roles. An example of a common gender stereotype is that women should get married and raise the children all while staying at home and taking care of the house and cooking meals. A common stereotype for men is that they need to be strong and have a high paying job so that he can provide for his family. Luckily, we have began to stray away from these gender stereotypes and are beginning to become more open to different ways of like and accepting people no matter how they choose to live their life.

This website had many different cartoons regarding gender stereotypes so I just picked the three I liked the most!
In cartoon #1, a mother is taking her children camping and when her older daughter wants her and the baby to look at mudpuppies she says no and hopes that tomboy doesn't run in the family. Basically, she is implying that she wants the baby, who is a girl, to act in the stereotypical way of being uninterested in camping and other outdoors activities.
Comic #2 shows how a boy is playing rough and being more destructive while the little girl sits quietly and plays with her doll.
Comic #4 shows a woman answering her office phone and being mistaken for a secretary and not the CEO of her company. This is a huge gender stereotype because women are more thought to be a secretary taking care of the little duties instead of being in charge.
A gender stereotype is when someone discriminates based on a person’s sex. When a person’s attitudes or behaviors encourage stereotyping of social roles based on genders, they are engaging in gender stereotyping. There are many disadvantages to gender stereotyping. These stereotypes set a poor examples for children growing up, constantly being reminded how gender roles in today’s society are displayed. Women have always expected to stay at home and raise children while the men work to make money to support his family. Women are expected to be soft and gentle, while men are supposed to be tough and hard working. These stereotypes have been prevalent in today’s work force and even professional athletics. Women still tend to have lower wages than men. Job opportunities are also unequal between genders due to stereotypes in society.

(Nurses station) In this comic, there is a nurse’s station with women working behind it. A caution line that reads “Gender Line Do Not Cross” separates the women from a male in scrubs. This demonstrates how nurses are typically stereotyped as females due to their caring nature. It is not seen as a male profession so the comic portrays this gender stereotype by playing the caution tape between the nurses and man.

(Dad cooking) This comic shows a son and dad discussing dinner plans while the mother is sick. The little boy didn’t know that his dad could cook because his mother always makes the meals. Cooking for the family is stereotyped as a woman’s duty to provide for her family. Cooking has always been seen as a woman’s job so it is seen as unusual when the dad cooks.

(Ultrasound) This comic shows a couple at their ultrasound, revealing that the baby is a girl because she is holding a shoe sale ad. The doctor knows it’s a girl solely because of the ad. This stereotypes that women are categorized by their obsession with shoes and sales. It is not seen as a male hobby because men are supposed to hate shopping. Women are stereotyped as loving to shop and spend money, especially on shoes and sales.
A gender stereotype is the false grouping of a particular gender and his or her roles, functions, and expectations. Gender stereotyping is detrimental because of the beliefs some people have about specific groups. This can hinder a person from actually having a chance due to what others say about them.
ReplyDeleteMy first comic involves a father and son in the kitchen. The mother is not home, so the father asks for his son’s help in cooking supper. His son then replies “You know how to cook??!” This is stereotypical of the father/mother roles. According to the stereotype, the mother is supposed to stay at home, clean, and cook. Believe it or not in today’s society, it is becoming more common for the father to stay at home with the children and help his wife with house tasks.

The second comic shows a group of female nurses standing behind the nurses’ station and sign that state ‘Gender Line-Do Not Cross’. Standing in front the desk is a male nurse with a confused look on his face. This shows the divide of female and male nurses. It used to be that only males were doctors and only females were nurses.

For my third comic, there is a father, mother, daughter, and son standing in their house while their father proclaims that he has found a mouse in the house. In reaction, the daughter shrieks while the son calls ‘dibs’. Not all girls are afraid of rodents and bugs, and not all boys like them.

A gender stereotype is when someone is discriminated on based on their sex. Although some stereotypes may be true they can't all be held true for every male and female. A disadvantage may be someone not acting like themselves because they don't want to stand out so they just go with the crowd. Not every girl is a shopaholic and not every guy knows the difference between a phillips and a slot-head or flat-head screw driver.

My first comic is a girl bending over asking a guy if he likes her boots and all he is looking at is her butt. This is a very well known stereotype that all guys care and think about are a girls' breasts and butt. This isn't true about all males even though it is portrayed that they are almost everywhere; movies, books, TV shows, comics and more.
My second comic shows a woman being very concerned with the fact that a mall is going to start closing earlier. And her husband is glad because he says they will save money then and she comes back saying that it just means she has to job harder with less time.
My third comic is a husband saying oh no I think we have a mouse and the wife shrieks. It shows that the man of the household is the one who will take care of rodents and not be afraid. This is a common stereotype with insects too that women are afraid and men aren't which is not always true.
Gender stereotypes are generalizations about how a man and a woman should act or carry themselves. They are assumptions about how a man and a woman should be. Some disadvantages to these stereotypes are a man and woman are expected to only act how the stereotypes suggest. If they do not act this way, they are considered different from everyone else. Another disadvantage would be that either of the genders would either be considered masculine and feminine if either of them did things outside of their stereotype.

My first comic is a muscular man as a lifeguard and a woman with about 10 kids. This stereotype is that men should always be strong and muscular while women should always only have and take care of the babies.
My second comic is of a woman in a store trying to buy some alcohol. The clerk won't sell to her because he thinks she is too sweet to drink a "manly" beer. There is also a sign in the background that says men need to be 25 to drink whiskey and other strong drinks while woman only need to be 18 to drink wine coolers. The stereotype in this comic is that women can't drink like men or drink more than men since it is not expected from us.
My third comic is of a man and his son. The man's wife is sick so he has to cook dinner but the son is amazed that the dad said he can cook. In the comic the son makes a comment that mom told him his dad only survived on simple foods to live after college. The stereotype in this comic is women should always cook because men don't know how.
A gender stereotype is a widely held belief regarding the characteristics, such as personality, behavior, abilities, of males versus females.
ReplyDeleteDisadvantages to stereotypes affect men and women. Statistics about which gender prevails in areas of math, language, and conceptualizations can lead to self-fulfilling prophecies. Perhaps the reason males/females falter in the areas which they statistically score lower is due to a belief that they will do more poorly than the other sex. Stereotypes about “macho manliness” can cause males to feel a communication barrier when they do truly need to express their feelings. This can lead to stress or depression when males feel they aren’t “allowed” to talk about their feelings/issues. Males could also become depressed of have a poor self-concept if they don’t fulfill the "manly” body type or sports fanatic interests. Women, as well, can develop very poor self-esteem or even eating disorders due to a lack of confidence in their appearance, due to stereotypes.

This is an interesting comic about female stereotypes and acceptance of sexual behaviors. The comic shows two little girls playing, and one says to the other “I can’t decide what I’m going to be when I grow up—a good girl or a slut.” It is a common judgment that males can be as promiscuous as they please while remaining respectable, even more highly respected, while females who exhibit high level of sexual activity are considered “slutty” and worse. On the other hand, girls who wish to not participate in sexual behavior, or keep it to a minimum are considered prudes.

This comic from cyanide and happiness shows one stick figure holding a tray of rolls. He said his wife baked them and they are called “traditional gender roles.” After taking a bite, the two conclude the rolls are disgusting and the original stick figure says maybe his wife should leavr the cooking to him. This comic illustrates the misconception that wives belong in the kitchen, cooking for their husbands. Men can be exceptional cooks just as women can, and it should never be assumed that the woman needs to be the cook. It shouldn't even be assumed that all women can even cook to begin with, or that a man cannot.

This link is to an applied psychology website, but I believe it is a xkcd comic. It shows two panels, each showing an incorrect math problem and two people. In the first, a male has done the problem incorrectly and the other person says “Wow, you suck at math.” In the second, a female has done the problem and it says “Wow, girls suck at math.” The book describes the gender difference between men and women when it comes to math and statistically, males are slightly better on average. However, that statistic is widely used as a broad generalization for all women. I have personally dealt with this stereotype, as a female who is in fact good at math. Except I am not just someone who is good at math, I’m a “girl” who is good at math. In highschool, males would ace a calc test and it was normal, but I was always described as a “nerd” because I was a girl. Men can be good and math and that’s normal, but I was made fun of for how odd I was, being good at math. I usually ended up hiding my tests, placing them upside down in most classes- to hide the embarrassment of getting a top score.
self-concept, self-esteem, stress, communication, self-fulfilling prophecy, stereotypes
A gender stereotype is when the different genders come with perceived ideas of how they act, think, dress, etc. Disadvantages of gender stereotypes are being completely wrong with the stereotype and getting the wrong idea of someone or some people. The first comic I found is about the dad cooking dinner because the mom is sick and the little boy goes “you can cook?” He is implying that only moms or women know how to cook. The second comic I found is stereotyping that only women can be nurses and that men aren’t allowed. The last comic is just a women with words saying that she is tired of being the “lazy housewife;” this shows that women are perceived as housewives once again, rather than being out and having jobs.

Gender Stereotypes are widely held beliefs about males or females regarding their abilities, personality traits, and social behaviors. It is how we expect each gender to act due to what we have learned through societal norms. Disadvantages to gender stereotypes can effect both males and females. When people are stereotyped, they can fall subject to self-fulfilling prophecies (belief that comes true because we are acting as if it is already true) which can be positive or negative, but when people see us a certain way, we begin to act that way and they also start to look for us to act that way, which is a social pressure called conformity. We also fall subject to snap judgments when we use stereotypes instead of forming an opinion after more information is gathered.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.cartoonstock.com/directory/g/gender_stereotypes.asp : cartoon 5
In this cartoon, a man says to a woman, “you’re beautiful when you’re docile and compliant”. This is an example of how men are stereotyped to be controlling, forward, and like to be in charge. This is horribly offensive to women because it states negative stereotypical generalizations as positive attributes. It reminded me of something they would say on Mad Men, which is based in the 60’s before civil rights and is extremely chauvinistic.
http://www.cartoonstock.com/directory/g/gender_stereotypes.asp : cartoon 9
This cartoon portrays a man on the hammock (which is a very manly/ dad associated place to lounge) and his wife is mowing the lawn. The man says to the wife, “stop complaining, at least is keeps you out of the kitchen”. First it hits on traditional gender roles where a woman should stay home and cook, therefore making her office the kitchen. Also it alludes to how the man works hard as the bread winner so he deserves a break, while the wife should be grateful to get out of the house.
http://thesocietypages.org/socimages/2009/10/30/gendering-halloween-costumes/
This is about gender roles around Halloween, which I thought would be appropriate. It shows how a girls only options are to be a “sexy” something while a boy has normal choices. During Halloween, woman are allowed and almost encouraged to wear as little as possible, this is the only time of year this behavior is not frowned upon for girls. This draws from how men are looking for a good breeding partner and how they will substitute looks for brains (resource exchange theory). This also touches on how society is becoming ever-more shallow.
A gender stereotype is having an inaccurate and simplistic generalizations about masculinity and femininity that allows others to categorize them and treat them accordingly. The disadvantages to gender stereotypes is that not everyone fits the view of the so called "Ideal Man" or "Ideal Woman" and when they do not fit into this category society tends to give those individuals more grieve than they deserve causing those people to have low self esteem about their image.

The 3 comic in this link is the one I chose. It shows a man and his wife having lunch. The man is reading a newspaper when his wife sees something on the back of the newspaper that catches her attention. She cuts it out with a pair of scissors while her husband was reading it. He is surprised to see a chunk of his newspaper missing and in the next picture it shows his wife with a coupon going to shop for dresses. The stereotypes is that all women think about is shopping.

In this comic the woman duck is handed expensive jewelry by a well dressed duck. She goes from modest casual look to having tons of expensive jewelry surrounding her. The stereotype suggests that women will do anything for money/expensive jewelry and desire nothing more besides it and that men just want women that do whatever they want and that admire them. In the comic the male duck says to the female duck "Nothing is too good for you my Pet" suggesting that men devalue women to just being objects.

This comic shows two men with their baby boys and one of the dad gives his son a baby doll to play with. He gets scrutinized by the other dad for his actions and tries to imply that it is not good for him. The other dad is surprised and asks what would happen and if his son would be a dad when he grows up if given a baby doll. The stereotype shown is that guys need to play with "guy toys" and girls need to play with "girl toys" in order for them to understand and maintain the gender stereotype and role.

Comic #3 http://uncommonground962.wordpress.com/ (need to scroll down a bit to see comic)
A gender stereotypes is the generalizations about the gender attributes, differences, and roles of individuals. Gender stereotypes can be a negative thing. One disadvantage to gender stereotypes is the negative connotation that comes with it. For example, woman in the professional world can look weaker than or not as good of an employee as man in her same position. This could be because of the stereotype that woman are suppose to stay home and take care of the children. So, a woman in the professional world is treated differently than men. All in all, normally gender stereotypes have a negative impact on situations.
My first comic depicts a dad cooking for his son because his mom isn’t home that night. His son is surprised he can cook. This is the stereotype that woman are suppose to be the homemakers and that the men are suppose to work and support the family. This comic did remind me of the parental investment theory. The fact that woman look for men to support the family, usually finically, shows this stereotype of men working and woman staying home. This stereotype is embedded in our culture. I am a very independent woman who thinks men and woman are equal. I still look for a mate that I know will be able to support a family.
The second comic shows a woman telling a man to look at her new boots. All he is looking at is her butt. This comic shows the stereotype that all men only care about a woman’s looks. Unlike the first comic, this comic reminded me of evolutionary bases theory. This theory states that men look for physical attractiveness in females. This theory does support the stereotype that men only care about looks. This shows that sometimes we cannot help the stereotypes that are in our culture. Some stereotypes are hard wired in a way.
The third comic showed a little girl and a little boy get money for cleaning. The little girl says “No fair! You got paid more!” and the boy says “Welcome to life.” It is no secret that men get paid more than woman that hold the same position. This comic shows the gender stereotype that I talked about in the beginning of my blog. Some companies just think that a man are better workers or smarter. I do not agree with this. Woman can be just, if not better, employees. When companies do decide on what to pay their employees, I believe that they should keep gender characteristics out of their decision. An example of this is how woman need to take maternity leave. This should not hinder their pay.

ReplyDeletehttp://lgbtlaughs.tumblr.com/post/27750863126/cyanide-happiness-comic-two-stick-men-in-the
A gender stereotype is the way in which society portrays genders and gives them specific characteristics that label them in a certain gender. There are some advantages of stereotypes, but mostly there are disadvantages of stereotypes. One disadvantage is that people are being labeled as certain things so when they go against some of those characteristics, they get judged for doing so. Another disadvantage is the fact that most stereotypes are incorrect in a lot of ways. Men are stereotyped to be masculine and also they are not criers like women. Everyone cries at some point in their life whether they are male or female. An advantage of being stereotyped is that one can feel like a part of a group of others who share similar characteristics. In the first comic I have, the stereotype that men never cry is being portrayed. It is not typical to see men cry and because of stereotypes they think that they cannot be seen crying otherwise they will be perceived as weak or feminine. The second comic portrays the social effects of stereotypes. When people see something out of the ordinary they automatically think that something is wrong. Finally, the last comic is a pun on the stereotype of gender roles. Women are perceived as the ones who do the cooking because men generally do not know how to cook or they are too busy working to pay the bills. In all three cases, the gender stereotypes are pretty loud and clear and our society has been going along with them for as long as I can remember. Even though more women are working and getting the same jobs as men, the stereotype still holds against them and the same goes for men.
Key Terms: stereotype, gender roles
Gender stereotypes can be defined by how society portrays and gives characteristics and expectations for how one should look, act, etc. While some stereotypes can be viewed as advantages, some stereotypes are definitely disadvantages. One large disadvantage is the assumption of masculine and feminine roles, particularly in the home and in the workplace. Certain things are expected of women (i.e., being motherly, cooking, cleaning, making less money) and others of men (i.e., head of the household, breadwinner, "Alpha Male"). When roles go against the gender stereotype, there can be a lot of negative connotation. Other disadvantages are in body image, as we've discussed in previous chapters. Men are perceived to be more "manly" if he fits the characteristics of broad shoulders, deep voice, etc. Women, in contrast, should be smaller, more "feminine", with soft features.

This one shows a man pushing a stroller with the caption "HELP!", stereotyping that women are the better, more natural caregivers of children and men do not know what they are doing in regard to children.

This picture shows a bunch of women saying "We can do without men, but we can't do much!" depicting the stereotype that women are helpless and need men.

Gender stereotypes are widely shared beliefs about males’ and females’ abilities, personality traits, and social behavior. There are several disadvantages to gender stereotypes. Because they are stereotypes, all people are clearly not portrayed by them, however many people do believe that they are true. The wider they are believed to be true, the more difficult they are to diminish.

This comic portrays the stereotype that men can’t cook. This is obviously not true. In my personal experience growing up, my mom did most if not all of the cooking. It was rare that my dad would cook a meal. However I do believe this varies in many households. My boyfriend is actually a great cook, and some days much better at it than I am.

This comic portrays the stereotype that men can’t be nurses. Men most certainly can be nurses, although it is much more common for women to fulfill the career role. I think in past years, this was much worse. Men were expected to take on more laborious jobs, whereas females were expected to take on jobs such as nursing.

This comic portrays the stereotype that women are held with higher expectations to keep their looks up than men are. It’s basically stating that it’s okay for men to put on a few extra pounds as they age. However, women are expected to maintain a certain weight.
A gender stereo type is an exaggerated belief about a specific gender. These are normally generalizations about each gender and are usually not correct. There are always disadvantages to all kinds of stereotypes. Some of the popular stereotypes about females are that we are all crazy, emotional and annoying. When in all actuality most females do not have these characteristics. Males have the stereotypes of being overly masculine and athletic. Not everyone can be a star athlete and can have other special qualities. With stereotypes like these it is easy for people to listen to them and judge other genders. Another disadvantage to these stereotypes comes from being put at a disadvantage because of them. It is common for people to be narrow minded and give into listening to these stereotypes.

The first comic shows stereotypes between boys and girls at young ages and the common belief that the opposite gender has koodies and we should stay away from them.
In the second comic, it shows how society thinks its unacceptable for women to not be stick thin. This is a hard subject for most girls since weight is such a big role in looks in modern day society.
The third comic shows stereotypes about jobs that men and women have. Most people assume nurses for example are only women, this is a stereotype that is shown by this comic.
Expectations, Norms, Stereotypes
Gender stereotypes are widely shared beliefs about males and females abilities, personality traits, and social behavior. Some disadvantages to gender stereotypes are, 1. Women are viewed as sex symbols instead of a person, 2. Men have huge pressure to succeed in the workforce, whereas women are supposed to have success in raising a family, 3. Women are still viewed as taking care of the home and children, so they can struggle in their careers because it is harder for women to advance in the work place then it is for men. http://feministallies.blogspot.com/2008/01/tuesday-gender-in-comics-stereotypes.html. In this stereotype comic strip it perceives men as being unable to cook and the women as being the cooks in the family. More often now, men are cooking more and taking more responsibility around the house to help their wives or partners out. http://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?p=1837. In this stereotype comic strip it gives examples of “linguistic stereotypes” or words that are said by both genders but associated to one or the other usually. In this case, the word “cute” is stereotyped as a female word, yes women do use it more often than men, but men do use it too. http://comicsalliance.com/comic-strip-shocker-women-still-marginalized/. In this comic strip the stereotype that women “henpeck” or continually criticize and give orders to their husbands, but I think that in reality it is pretty even of who gives the orders, the women or the men.
ReplyDeleteA gender stereotype is a belief about how each gender “should” act or what common hobbies they have. Disadvantages with gender stereotypes would be how they affect adults’ careers and the pay they may have due to their gender. Another disadvantage to gender stereotypes would be if someone doesn’t necessarily fit their gender stereotype they may feel isolated or left out, such as men with a more feminine style or way they carry themselves or women who are “manlier” than women are stereotyped to be.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.chrismadden.co.uk/images/cartoons/hammer-man-brush-woman-feminist-art-cartoon-cjmadden.gif
This comic displays the typical stereotype of the division of housework with the man being portrayed as the hammer for the fix-it-up work around the house while the woman is portrayed as a scrubbing brush for the cleaning around the house.
http://www.changingpeople.co.uk/img/Gender-roles.-Cartoon-from-70s-Runaway-Lawyer-300x257.gif
This cartoon portrays the gender stereotypes in a career field sense. For example, the mom stays home and cooks while the dad goes to work. Meanwhile, the daughter is ready to go to work alongside men and not make as much as them.
http://colepole.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/lowe.jpg?w=300&h=226
Stereotypically, aging is not well-liked by women and this cartoon shows a 50 year old Barbie with a Botox kit that goes with her, strengthening the stereotype that women feel a need to look younger. Also, the fact that the cartoon uses a Barbie doll to show this stereotype makes the mom get a wide-eyed look of disbelief, which is ironic because many women wouldn’t consider Botox at fifty unreasonable, but the fact that it is shown to children adds a bit of a shock value.
Gender Stereotypes are shared views about women and men’s capabilities, personality traits and social behavior. There are a lot of disadvantages of gender stereotypes for both men and women. For women, stereotyping can make it socially hard for them to be taken seriously in both education and the workforce. Because of negative characteristics placed upon women, such as they are incompetent or clumsy, they then conform to these qualities. Insecurities within the workforce and education might also cause a woman to not speak her mind as freely as she wishes. Men also suffer from gender stereotyping. In society today, men should not have feminine qualities, such as showing any emotions or being weak, which in turn can disrupt their mental and emotional growth.

The first comic I found is a son and father talking about dinner. The mother is sick so the father has to cook and the son automatically assumes, because he’s a man, that he couldn’t cook.

The second comic I found is a comic that says “Just wait until your mother gets home.” It seems as though mothers’ have to do all the work with children, while men bring home the paycheck.

The third comic is a mother asking her daughter why her son can’t play quiet like a girl can. Boys tend to be more loud and destructive while girls are more nurturing and play with dolls, etc.
Gender stereotypes are the relatively fixed and overgeneralized attitudes and behaviors that are considered normal and appropriate for a person in a particular culture based on his or her biological sex. These stereotypes can carry several disadvantages, including derogatory slurs that can be harmful to one’s self esteem, confidence and overall emotional well-being.

I found this video interesting and very informative on the many types of gender stereotypes.
http://arnoldzwicky.s3.amazonaws.com/ZitsGenderTeen.gif
In this comic it is portraying the female as being garrulous, whereas the male is the one that concisely gets the information across.
http://bigbigbigthings.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Cathy1.jpg
In this comic it is portraying the female believing that the male is the all-around handyman than can fix tangible items. However, the man does not fit the stereotype and in fact turns a stereotype upon the woman, claiming she will complete the cooking and domestic aspects of the relationship.
https://hrlibrary.wikispaces.com/file/view/Gender_Roles_Garfield.gif/31707857/Gender_Roles_Garfield.gif
In this comic it is portraying the female gender stereotype to be overly sensitive and emotional. When in fact, the male can be just as sensitive or emotional as is depicted by the male in this strip, when he vacates the area in order to hide his emotions. It also shows the stereotype that males cannot show their emotions in front of others for fear of degradation, humiliation, and otherwise negative connotations with the idea.
Gender stereotyping is the the discrimination based on a person's gender and what roles that gender is supposed to play. Gender stereotypes can have good and bad connotations. For example, men are seen as being strong, are confident, are good leaders, and are good in science and math fields. Good female stereotypes are seen as responsible, kind, and compassionate. Bad stereotypes for males include they can only work in masculine fields like construction and mechanics, are incapable of showing emotion, are lazy and irresponsible, and cannot cook or do housework. Bad stereotypes for women include being unintelligent especially in math and science, are afraid of the outdoors and getting dirty, must working in feminine fields like nursing and childcare, and are solely responsible for housework and childcare. Although gender-stereotyping is more severe against females, gender-stereotypes against males does still have an impact.
ReplyDeletehttp://3.bp.blogspot.com/_11piqwUpOEg/R4OeQZ9E6cI/AAAAAAAAAh0/WYwwHwd95Jg/s1600/ch_DadCooks.JPG
The gender stereotype emphasized here is that men are incapable of doing housework and cooking. It also emphasizes that women belong in the kitchen, and her not being there is abnormal and to be noticed.
http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/how_it_works.png
This gender stereotype shown here is that women and not as intelligent as men especially in math and science. It also shows that if a man is to make a mistake, it is attributed to him being human and making an error, while if a women makes a mistake it is attributed to her gender. I also find it funny that they would infer that anyone in a calculus class, sucks at math.
http://static.fjcdn.com/pictures/The_89a78d_1571975.gif
This one borderlines stereotyping to discrimination, but I have a not so secret love for women in the kitchen jokes so I thought I'd include it. This image shows how women are, again not smart enough to understand new technology; therefore, should leave such things to their more capable counterparts, the men and go back to their proper role, housework, cooking, and caring for the children.
Gender stereotypes occur when generalizations are made about certain attributes, differences, and roles of males or females. Even though these stereotypes can be positive, we tend to think of them as being the opposite - possibly because of the negative nature of the term "stereotype." Making generalizations based on gender is a mistake in that the information it conveys is rarely accurate. While the majority of individuals will admit that gender stereotyping is a problem, everyone is guilty of either inflicting or being a subject of these generalizations. A major disadvantage of gender stereotypes is that they can greatly inhibit an individual's potential, which could lead to a lower self-esteem. For example, as husbands (or men in general) are assumed to be the ones who make a living to support their families, wives/females are often discouraged from having a career after marriage; instead, females are to stay at home and take care of the children and household chores. While some may be perfectly happy filling these gender-based roles, others prefer to defy the stereotypes. Another disadvantage of these generalizations is that the person making them will miss out on all the good qualities and ideas an individual has to offer, despite his or her gender.

In the second comic found on this link, Garfield is fulfilling the male stereotype of being somewhat self-centered. Despite his female friend's obviously negative comment, Garfield understands it as being a compliment and allows it to boost his ego.
http://comicsidontunderstand.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/arlene.gif
Similar to the above comic, this one depicts the male (Garfield) as being self-centered. Arlene fulfills the female role of being emotional and romantic, while "typical" male behavior is shown in Garfield's apparent lack of either quality.
http://imgdonkey.com/big/WHpsUE4/one-of-my-favourite-calvin-&-hobbes-strips.gif
This comic starts off somewhat defiant of the female stereotype by indicating that the woman has a job rather than stays at home. However, she is also depicted as a caring mother and (at the end) wanting to play "house," both of which are characteristics commonly attributed to females. The male, then, is depicted as being emotionless (hoping for divorce) and not wanting a baby or to play "house."
Gender stereotypes is what people believe on the person's characteristics, abilities, and thoughts based on their gender. Some disadvantages to gender stereotypes is that women and men are suppose to think or do something that may not accurately portray them. Women are suppose to stay at home cook, clean, and take care of the children. Also they are suppose to love shopping, throwing dinner parties, and show emotion. Men are suppose to go to work and be the breadwinner or the household. They are suppose to be masculine and be into sports. They are judgments about people that are not always true.
ReplyDeletehttp://thecomicssection.blogspot.com/2009_05_31_archive.html
The first comic is Blondie. The malls have cut their hours so she is going to buy more items in a shorter amount of time. The gender stereotype is that women want to go shopping all the time and spend too much money.
http://feministallies.blogspot.com/2008/01/tuesday-gender-in-comics-stereotypes.html
The next comic is For Better or For Worse were the husband makes a comment the wife has put on some weight. The gender stereotypes is that women have to keep their skinny figure even though it may not be true for their husbands.
http://www.comicvine.com/forums/off-topic-5/do-you-believe-in-gender-roles-1466265/
The last comic gender stereotype is saying that would saying women should stay in the kitchen. It is the women's job to stay home and cook not to go out into the workforce.
Gender stereotypes are generalized beliefs about males’ and females’ abilities, personality traits, and social behaviors. There are several disadvantages to gender stereotypes including, inaccurate assumptions being made about someone based solely based on their gender. Another disadvantage is that someone deviating from the gender stereotype is seen as wrong or breaking away from the norm.
ReplyDeletehttp://uncommonground962.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/20130430-151711.jpg
The first comic depicts the gender stereotype that some jobs are just for men and some jobs are just for women. Thankfully the comic is showing a situation defying this gender stereotype.
http://uncommonground962.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/20130430-151927.jpg
The second comic is portraying the gender stereotype that men are always supposed to be the physically strong one in the relationship. Again this comic is depicting the opposite of gender stereotype.
http://feministallies.blogspot.com/2008/01/tuesday-gender-in-comics-stereotypes.html
The third comic I chose is a father explaining that he is cooking dinner and the son is surprised that he knows how to cook. The gender stereotype that is being shown is that women are supposed to do all of the cooking in a household.
A gender stereotype is a widely shared belief about males' and females' abilities, personality traits, and social behavior. There are many disadvantages of gender stereotypes for both men and women. Persistent female stereotypes include likes children, neat, and home oriented. These stereotypes are so wrong, because I personally know women who hate children, are very mess, and who never want to be married. Persistent male stereotypes include being active, being independent, and having mechanical aptitude. Stereotypes like these lead people to believe that men are outdoors types or can build anything. Given, that I am all three described, a lot of men are not, as their strengths lie in other areas.

This comic is a complete flip of gender stereotypes. It depicts the male as the home maker and caretaker of children, while showing the woman as the breadwinner coming home from the office.

This comic shows a boy and a girl playing with normal childhood toys. Except that the boy is playing with the dolls and the girl is playing with the truck, instead of vice versa, as would be considered normal.
Gender stereotypes are widely shared beliefs about males' and females' abilities, personality traits, and social behavior. A disadvantage of gender stereotyping is the inaccuracy it creates. People are quick to judge and do not analyze the context or the individual involved in the situation, therefore making a judgmental error. Another disadvantage is that it does not allow for advancement in equality. If people are making quick and inaccurate judgments, they do not allow for the truth of the situation to be presented. They simply view the person how they want to view them and do nothing to change the stereotypical view.
ReplyDeleteComic 1: https://hrlibrary.wikispaces.com/file/view/Gender_Roles_Garfield.gif/31707857/Gender_Roles_Garfield.gif
The first comic is from Garfield. Jon and his girlfriend are watching a movie and she says, "This part always make me cry" to which Jon turns to Garfield and says, "Aww girls are so sensitve." He continues to comfort her and then excuses himself. He is heard blowing his nose excessively loud and comes back all red eyed and says to his girlfriend, "Feel better now?" to which Garfield says, "Smooth save senor macho." This comic illustrates how women are perceived to be the emotional needy type while men are supposed to be tough and not cry.
Comic 2: http://joshreads.com/?cat=57&paged=49
The second comic strip is of what I presume to be a kangaroo or some animal of some sort. It appears to be feminine and is standing underneath a light fixture writing on a piece of paper. Below it it says, "How many pluggers' wives does it take to change a light bulb? None. She just adds it to her husband's "honey to do list'" This comic illustrates the idea that women can't do simple housework tasks and they rely on men to fix things.
Comic 3:http://yuanyuanliang.blogspot.com/2009/03/inter-gender.html
The third comic is from Zits. It shows the difference in unspoken communication between genders. In the first picture it shows two girls saying "hi" but in their unspoken communication they are inspecting everything about each other. In the second picture it shows two guys saying "hi" and their unspoken communication is a simple "hi" as well. This comic portrays the notion that guys are simple minded and they don't pay attention to detail or make observations.
Gender stereotypes are widely accepted beliefs that are simplistic and most times inaccurate of a certain sex. They are thought to be norms in society and when someone challenges this collective viewpoint that person may be looked down upon. A disadvantage of gender stereotypes is one may fall victim to self-fulfilling prophecies and might behave in that stereotypical way to be accepted.
ReplyDeletehttp://hrlibrary.wikispaces.com/file/view/Gender_Roles_Garfield.gif/31707857/Gender_Roles_Garfield.gif This comic hits on the gender stereotype that women are overemotional and men aren’t supposed to cry. The societal norm for men is that they are the stronger gender and typically show much emotion.
http://www.marriedtothesea.com/111409/teaching-kids-about-gender-roles.gif In this comic the gender stereotype that women should be in the kitchen while the men work is shown. I’m sure everyone is aware of the “go make me a sandwich” line and that’s a perfect example of this gender stereotype. Women are thought to be domestic goddesses and only be concerned with the cooking and cleaning.
http://grumpycatpics.com/pics/24/Gender-Test--Comic-Stereotype-Picture-.jpg This comic shows two guys trying to decide if the cat is male or female. To put it to the test they put the cat in the car to have it parallel park. This shows the gender stereotype that women are bad drivers and that they can’t park well. The societal norm is that men are supposed to be the ones who know all about cars and are all excellent drivers and women are clueless and careless when it comes to cars.
A gender stereotype is a simplistic generalization about the gender attributes, differences, and roles of individuals or groups. Some disadvantages of gender stereotypes is that some people look down upon women and think that they are only meant for housework and it could really put a damper on some goals that women may have. Some occupations have more female than male workers and so then most people consider them “women’s work”. Teachers, secretaries, RNs are categorized under this title because about 94-98% of workers are female.

This comic was a gender stereotype because both males and females put a label on each other. In this case, an older woman who goes after younger guys is a cougar and a handsome guy is a hairy Neanderthal. These types of gender stereotypes could cause stress on the person that they are labeling because they might feel the need to live up to that stereotype of not like it and want to change because of it.

This comic explains the gender stereotype because of what I explained earlier about gender related careers. More females are registered nurses than males and so this comic expresses it by having a “gender line” in front of the nurses’ station that the doctor can’t pass. The perception of this comic is that women are granted special rights, or it could mean that they are their own community and are self-sufficient and don’t need a man’s help.

This is a perfect example of how women are portrayed in society today. Women are supposed to do the cooking and house duties of the house and a man isn’t supposed to know how to do any of that. Also, a man’s type of cooking consists of frozen food is another gender stereotype. This portrays gender roles and what a man and woman are ideally supposed to do to help the family.
Gender stereotypes ties in with the general stereotypes that we talked about a couple weeks ago. They go hand-in-hand and both are discriminatory against a group or individual. However, I believe that gender stereotypes are more similar culture to culture then racial discrimination and prejudice.
Key words: stereotype, gender role, stress, perception, discrimination, prejudice
Gender stereotypes are bases formed which imply that one particular gender has a tendency or expectancy to think, behave, speak, or have traits about them that can be explained merely because they are a member of their particular sex. They are extensively vast, and while some are culturally universal and historical, others have just recently been formed, and differer throughout the world. They can be damaging because not only do they limit certain genders from acting in ways they want to act without being socially scrutinized, but also because they create self-fulfilling prophecies, where a person will rationalize and form excuses for their behavior such as, "it's not my fault, I'm a guy," or, "yeah, I get to do that because I'm a woman. You can't."

This is a BitStrip I made of myself attacking a giant wasp in the garage, while yelling out to my wife that it really isn't the most ideal job for me. It points out the stereotype that men are expected to handle the dirty, more dangerous work, when in reality, we, for the most part, have homogenous abilities and vulnerabilites.

This is a Calvin & Hobbes cartoon where Calvin is surprised that his dad is cooking dinner that night. His dad explains how he used to cook for himself through college, until we learn that he toasted frozen waffles and heated soup. This references the stereotype that cooking is best left up to women after cohabitation.

This Zits comic shows the unspoken thoughts that occur when women and men interact with each other. It references the stereotype that men tend to be more simple minded, and women tend to overanalyze everything.
Gender stereotypes are generalized beliefs/feelings/attitudes about how males and females should act. These stereotypes are based on capabilities, traits, and roles those of each gender should carry/have. There are many disadvantages to gender stereotypes. For instance, gender stereotyping can make it rather hard for women to be taken seriously in various educational and employment settings (i.e. men are more likely to be doctors or architects). Gender stereotypes can also make people feel a sense of inadequacy if they don't fit within the fairly strict generalizations society has placed on both genders.
ReplyDeleteThe first comic I chose portrays a little boy asking his dad why he's the one cooking, rather than his mother. The comic then goes on to stereotype when the little boy finds out that his dad in fact knows how to cook as well. This stereotypes women in a way that they are the ones who should be doing the cooking for a variety of reasons, but it also stereotypes men as not being able to cook. It shows that men aren't encouraged to learn how to cook, just as much as women are. That's just societies expectations, or lack there of, for each gender in regards to cooking within the household.
The second comic I chose is about appearance. Women are stereotyped quite often in regards to their appearance, and now-a-days men are frequently stereotyped too. Instead of being comfortable in their own skin, both men and women, are stereotyped every day based solely off of their appearances. Women maybe stereotyped as "average" or "lazy" based solely off of their bodyweight and these stereotypes can be detrimental to their self-esteem. Along with stereotyping women's physical appearances, the comic also shows that there is definitely some what of a double-standard in today's society when is comes to weight gain between men and women.
-Though this specific comic doesn't really stereotype males, now-a-days mens appearances are becoming objectified in ways similar to women. These objectifications and stereotypes, that may not previously have been made in regards to male appearances (i.e. weight, balding, hairless bodies, tan skin, etc.), may be harmful to their self-concept and self-esteem.
The third comic I chose is a good example of stereotypes found in regards to certain professions. Since the dawn of time, women and men have been known to hold different, specific jobs. This comic is a good example of how nursing is an occupation that is looked at as a women's job, rather than a mens job, even though men are becoming more and more relevant in the nursing field.

A gender stereotype is roles set on people based on their gender, man or woman, much like regular stereotypes. There are many disadvantages to gender stereotypes. One of the biggest ones I disagree with is the role of women in the household. Many times, people think women should be home cleaning the house, doing laundry, etc. No. I think that extremely biased and women should be out working just like men. Another one is that men are said to not show emotion. I disagree with that entirely. Men are human and humans show emotion, they should not bottle it up and store it away forever; it is not healthy.

This gender stereotype is one that describes my opinion about women in the household. It talks about being a housewife and that she is tired of it. It then says that she wants to take a break and go and get a job. I feel that a lot of people view it this way whether you are a man or a woman. Men typically think that their wives should stay home because the men are the one who should provide for the family. However, women don’t necessarily like to stay home all day and work around the house; we also want to provide for the family because that’s what marriage is, providing for each other.

This comic has a man and a woman whom both have books. The woman’s says The Art of Forgiving while the man’s says The Art of Forgetting. I believe this is a common stereotype where woman are the ones who are supposed to forgive the man in the relationship. It is typical for a man to forget what happened and move on. This goes back to the emotions where men are not supposed to show their emotions because they are a man.
http://www.cartoonstock.com/directory/l/lazy_men.asp (Number 1 of 19)
This comic shows a man who is sleeping in a recliner while the tv is on saying that he is watching a show in search of America’s laziest man. I feel like a lot of people believe the stereotype that men are lazy and or messy. However, hey certainly are not. While they may be ‘lazy’ at times and may not pick up after themselves, they still work very hard.

Gender stereotypes are preconceived notions of the different roles between genders.
ReplyDeleteOne gender may feel they cannot do something because it is a predetermined notion they and society have.

I don’t know much about Social Anxiety Disorder or Social Phobia but what I think it is, is when someone experience anxiety at the thought of having to interact with people in a social setting.
ReplyDeleteAccording to DSM 5, Social Anxiety Disorder is a noticeable fear or anxiety about one or more social situations where the individual is exposed to possible scrutiny by others.
Associated features that support this diagnosis include the fear and anxiety in peer situations and not just in interactions with adults. The person is very concerned that he or she will be judged as weak, anxious, stupid, boring, dirty or unlikeable. The individual may show physical symptoms of these fears as well such as blushing, trembling, sweating, stumbling over one’s words, or staring, and they worry that these will be negatively evaluated by others. These physical symptoms may cause the individual to avoid doing certain tasks in public such as shaking someone’s hand if theirs is sweaty, pointing if their hand is shaking or talking if they’re worried they might stutter. Along with concerns and physical symptoms the individual may also fear being rejected or insulting someone. Individuals with social anxiety disorder often overestimate the negative consequences of social situations, and thus the judgment that may be made. Some individuals may experience fear or anxiety well in advance to the actual situation. They may show this in different ways such as avoiding certain tasks or over preparing for the situation such as a speech. The fear, anxiety, and avoidance of certain social settings must interfere significantly with the person’s regular activity. The individual must show clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning for longer than six months. The individual may be extremely submissive, show rigid body posture, avoid eye contact and speak extremely soft.
The 12-months prevalence of this disorder is about 7% and adolescents and adult rates are comparable. Higher rates of social anxiety disorder are found in females than in males in general and gender difference in prevalence is more pronounced in adolescents. Prevalence in the United States is higher in American Indians and lower in persons of Asian, Latino, African American, and Afro-Caribbean descent compared with non-Hispanic whites.
The onset Social Anxiety Disorder is seen at the median age of 13 and 75% of individuals see onset between the ages of 8 and 15. The disorder can develop from a childhood history of social inhibition or shyness. It may also follow a stressful or extremely humiliating event or in a situation that may cause a change in social roles. Social Anxiety Disorder tends to be particularly persistent once diagnosed. Older adults express social anxiety at lower levels and across a wider range of situations, whereas younger adults express higher levels of social anxiety for particular situations. Older adults may develop this disorder because of a disability causing lower sensory functions such as seeing or hearing. Many older adults see remission of this disorder within a few years of being diagnosed with it but for about 60% of individuals without a specific treatment for social anxiety disorder, the course may take several years or longer.
Some prognostic factors include temperamental, environmental, genetic and psychological. Temperamental factors include characteristics that predispose individuals to social anxiety disorder. These include behavioral inhibition and fear of negative evaluation. Environmental factors are such factors like childhood abuse and the genetic and psychological factors include children with socially anxious parents are more likely to have social anxiety issues. They are 2 to 6 times more likely to have a social-anxiety disorder.
Culture-related diagnostic issues are those such as in Korea and Japan they have issues with social-evaluation. An individual may fear that he or she makes other people uncomfortable so they avoid social situations. These culture related rates might not be in line with self-reports in the same cultures but it is seen that collectivistic cultures report higher levels of social anxiety but they have lower prevalence of social anxiety disorder.
DeleteThere isn’t much information regarding gender-related diagnostic issues but it is seen that females suffer from social anxiety more than males and females have a higher number of social fears and depressive, bipolar, and anxiety disorders. Males fear things like dating; they are more defiant and are more likely to use alcohol and illegal drugs to relieve their symptoms of this disorder.
Social-anxiety Disorder is many times comorbid with other anxiety disorders such as major depressive disorder or substance abuse. Social-anxiety disorder is normally seen before the onset of the other disorders. Isolating one’s self for long periods of time may cause depression; this is seen more in adults. Social anxiety disorder is also comorbid with bipolar disorder, body dysmorphic disorder and in children it comorbidities with high-functioning autism and selective mutism.

This video is about Royce White who is a college basketball player who struggles with Social-Anxiety Disorder. He talks about how he feels so much fear when he has to go into a room full of people and that his mom deals with the same issue and that her mom does as well. He gets so scared and nervous that he can’t even sit at a table with high school students. All of these symptoms correlate or match with what the DSM 5 says. He has to walk around because he’s feeling so apprehensive. He goes onto say that he’s been up against many wonderful basketball players and out preforms them every time but because of his mental illness he’ll never be as ‘great’ as them. When they announce on the TV that he got picked up by the Houston Rockets, the other people erupt with excitement and he just leaves the room because he’s so uncomfortable. He says that he wants to deal with is disorder and show other people that just because they might have fears, or in his case extreme fear, you can still achieve your dreams
Since I didn’t know much about this disorder, I learned a lot. I can definitely see how it correlates with other disorders like depression and substance abuse and that it can be hard to diagnose because many people struggle with some anxiety.
