Autism Spectrum Disorder is characterized by deficits in social communication and social interaction. Recent technology has provided a potential breakthrough in treating autism spectrum disorder through facilitating more social communication.
Should you choose to complete this assignment for course credit, please do the following:
- Read this article. Please also browse through the facts of the autism spectrum disorder slideshow at the bottom of the article.
- What is autism spectrum disorder (ASD)?
- (Please note that with the release of the DSM 5 this past summer, the field transitioned from a categorical approach to a dimensional (spectrum) approach. Therefore, it isn't called autistic disorder anymore as it has been replaced with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Additionally, we no longer refer to the higher functioning form of Autism as Aspberger's Disease...it has been lumped with Autism Spectrum Disorder, which is broken down into levels depending on the severity of symptoms.)
- Summarize the article. Be sure to include how the new technology can help treat ASD. It wouldn't hurt to throw in some of the facts from the slideshow at this point!
- What are your thoughts?
When referring to individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder, please do not called them "autistic." In other words, when you are writing, don't say something like, "Autistic children show deficits in communication." Rather, please substitute with "Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder show deficits in communication." Use person-first language when describing anyone who has a mental illness, please!
Autistic Spectrum Disorder is described in the DSM 5 including difficulties communicating, responding inappropriately in conversations, misreading nonverbal interactions, or having difficulty building friendships appropriate to their
ReplyDeleteage. Being overly dependent on routine is another trait included in the DSM 5 for Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Something new included in the DSM 5 is that the severity will lie on a continuum.
This article that describes the breakthrough, accidental new use for Google Glasses is quite amazing. How people with autism can use the Google Glasses with the Sension program and use the combination to read social cues is a great discovery. This can be an educational tool to help people with autism to learn social cues in time. The use of these glasses for people with autism can also lead to uses for people with other disorders as well. Early identification and intervention is mentioned as being a great thing for helping people with autism get the help they need and thrive in the future. The go-to intervention may just be these Google Glasses in the near future. This is very exciting and great things could come from this amazing discovery, I believe.
Autism spectrum disorder is the disorder in which an individual has a disability where the brain has difficulty comprehending behaviors, facial cues, and other aspects of communication. This article discusses a college student who is coming up with a new way of training the brain of individuals with autism in order to learn and recognize different facials cues. The program is called the Google Glass and it is able to recognize movements of the face. By using the Google glasses, individuals will be able to look at people and communicate more easily because they are told what the different facial expressions mean. It is also discussed that this tool will not be used for everyday use but for education that will be beneficial for the real world. The article also said that this tool can possibly used in the future for individuals with other disorders once it is finalized as a beneficial tool.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts on this are that I think that this would be very beneficial. I think that by training the brain to recognize different facial expressions it will help the individuals to learn and acquire a sense for the expressions and benefit them with communication. I think it is a very good idea and should be practiced and used frequently so that it can become prevalent and available to everyone with ASD and other disorders.
Autism Spectrum Disorder can be described as difficulties communicating verbally, inappropriately responding in conversations, misunderstanding nonverbal cues, and having difficulty in social situations including building friendships with peers (according to the DSM V). Children diagnosed with ASD fall somewhere on the spectrum based on severity.
ReplyDeleteThe article describes an accidental discovery of a new kind of technology to aid children who are affected by ASD. This is so important, as the prevelence of ASD is increasing; 1 in 88 children (primarily males) are affected by ASD and can be diagnosed as early as infancy. This is why regular check-ups for developmental milestones are important to evaluate whether or not a child may have a cognitive or developmental delay. Although there is no cure for ASD, there are several types of therapy to aid in wellness. Discoveries like the one in this article are important in the breakthrough of therapeutic techniques.
I found this article extremely interesting because I am actually pursuing a career in Occupational Therapy and especially interested in ASD research. I've done a lot of shadowing in pediatrics and am really interested in learning about new, innovative ways to use technology in therapy for children with ASD!
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a group of developmental brain disorders. "Spectrum" is used to refer to the wide range of symptoms, skills, and levels of disability, that children with ASD can have. Some children are mildly affected by their symptoms, but others are severely impaired. These symptoms include difficulty developing social and communication skills.
ReplyDeleteThe article describes a technology known as Google Glass that could be used to help people who have Autistic Spectrum Disorder, even though that wasn't the original purpose of this technology. Google Glass recognizes facial expressions and matches them with emotions. This could be a tool that can help people with Autistic Spectrum Disorder function easier in social situations when communicating with others, lessening their struggle to relate with peers and recognize their emotions and adjust to the situation. The hope is that this could be a learning tool, not something that patients would have to wear forever.
I actually have a younger brother who lives with (but does not suffer! He perseveres!) Autistic Spectrum Disorder. He was diagnosed at a younger age, so I do not know where he falls on the spectrum, but his symptoms are pretty mild. My brother has somewhat learned how to relate to his peers' emotions, he has grown out of the severity of his starting symptoms I would say. He still struggles sometimes- he has a hard time understanding sarcasm, and if you're only a little annoyed with him, he'll assume you're VERY angry, not just a little angry. So I guess you could say that when he expects or picks up an emotion, he picks it up at a higher intensity than it is being expressed. He does pretty well though, most people don't even think he has anything of the sort until it's mentioned, and then they're kind of like, "Oh yeah, I guess I can kind of see it now that you've told me." I do think that if Brandon had used Google Glass at a younger age, he'd have grown out of the severity of his starting symptoms much quicker and would have even milder symptoms than he does now. I hope they can innovate this technology to fit this need, because I think it could really help some kids that suffer from more severe symptoms.
Autism Spectrum Disorders are “a group of developmental disabilities that can cause significant social, communication, and behavioral challenges” (http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/autism/index.html).
ReplyDeleteThe article discusses how an 18 year old college freshman accidentally created a software program that could be used to help individuals with ASDs to learn social cues such as emotions and facial expressions. The software was originally meant for education purposes tracking facial expressions, but was quickly discovered that the software was able to also track emotions. These glasses could help treat ASDs by having an individual with ASD wear them and when they encounter a person, the glasses would read the emotion the person is displaying out loud, but looking for facial cues. The hope is that the individual with ASD after enough wears would be able to identify the same emotions on their own without having to wear the glasses. Some common statistics on ASDs are that boys have a five times greater chance of having an ASD than girls and ASDs are caused by both environmental and biological components.
Having worked with individuals with ASDs, it is quite difficult because like the article states they are unable to read social cues. There have been a few times at work when a person I support laughs at very inappropriate times because he does not know better. While I am not sure these glasses are the ultimate solution because the individuals using them would have to be very high functioning to benefit from them, I do believe that these glasses could be a great start for helping individuals with ASDs to begin to learn appropriate social cues.
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a group of developmental brain disorders. A spectrum is a wide range of symptoms, skills, and levels of impairment or disability. There are some people that are mildly impaired, while others are severely impaired.
ReplyDeleteThis article introduces a new software that allows children with autism spectrum disorder to interact better with others. Sension has a built in facial tracker that recognizes facial movements and emotions. If the software is pointed at a girl smiling, then the digital display reads “happy”, and this could help the child with autism spectrum disorder recognize what happiness looks like. The inventors of the software want this to be a learning tool and hope that it doesn’t have to be constantly used. I also learned some interesting facts from the slideshow. Some of these were that 1 in 50 school-age children have autism spectrum disorder and males are more likely than females to have it. There is no exact cure for it and doctors aren’t sure how a child can get it. Finally, about 10 percent of children with autism spectrum disorder also have another disorder.
I believe that this is a disorder that we need to do more research on. More and more children are being affected by it each day. It isn’t going to go away and I believe that we need to fix it before it gets worse. I also am not happy with the new DSM 5 because Asperger’s Syndrome has some very different characteristics than Autism. There are many characteristics that are the same but Asperger’s has enough different symptoms that it should be its own group again. By saying that children with Asperger’s Syndrome are just under the Autism Spectrum Disorder, it is giving away some of their individuality and combining them with a group that is different than their own. Asperger’s Syndrome alone has a spectrum within itself and combining it as one under the Autism Spectrum is depleting the ability of others to help the children in need.
Autism Spectrum Disorder affects 1 out of 88 children that are born. Those diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder have problems with communicating verbally and nonverbally, have troubles with social interactions, cannot read situations very well, and can have different behaviors than one who is not diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. When the autism spectrum disorder child is an infant, they will not be able to speak on time and they won’t be able to hold eye contact.
ReplyDeleteThe article talks about a software that was designed to help with video games and educational purposes by a college freshman, but by accident is was discovered to help with therapy for someone with autism spectrum disorder. The original software was designed to help with online teaching for response to a user’s behavior to make learning more interactive. A facial tracker was built and it was discovered to be able to track emotions. Google Glass is now helping those with ASD to identify facial cues in real time. It tells the user what emotions someone has by their facial expressions. If they are frowning it tells them that they are sad, or if they are smiling it says that they are happy. This could help autism spectrum disorder people to be more alert and help them socially. The creator of Google Glass is hoping that this is just a teaching tool and will help those when they aren’t using the Glass so they don’t have to wear them all of the time.
I think this is great that the Google Glass was invented, even if it was by accident. At my high school we had some students that were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and we tried to make it as much of a high school experience as possible. We had them in choir with us and in our classes. They recognized us as classmates and friends, but everyone else could see that they were having a hard time with certain things. Those ASD students are the most pure people you will ever meet. They have the best intentions over something that they can’t control. I am all for things that can help them learn and recognize certain aspects in social environments. I hope that someday we will be able to do a lot more for them, because they deserve it.
Autism Spectrum disorder is a disorder that effects three main areas of a childs life. These areas are social interaction, communication, and behaviors/interests. This article describes new software that can be used to help autistic children distinguish a persons facial communications. They found that this software could be beneficial because if a person would use these google glasses in the real world instead of an artificial setting, it would be very beneficial. I personally think that this software would be extremely beneficial to an autistic person when communicating with another person. With further research, they may be able to eventually “train” the mind so that an autistic would no longer need this software to understand expressions.
ReplyDeleteAutism Spectrum Disorder is many closely-related disorders with a shared core of symptoms. There is a wide degree of variation in the way it affects people.
ReplyDeleteThis article talks about an invention that was originally made for educational things and video games, is now being looked at as a possible therapy for children with autism spectrum disorder. It is a software for google glass that is getting a lot of attention right now. They also created a facial tracker for this software. The facial tracker can recognize facial movements. This is important for a person with autistic spectrum disorder because it would allow for them to identify facial cues in real time. This is also very appealing because boys are more likely than girls to have autism spectrum disorder and the tracker some what resembles a video game which will catch their attention while still teaching them. The software would allow the user to interact with others while being alerted of their social cues. There is no certain cause of autism spectrum disorder and is why an invention like this will help people with this disorder to improve their skills and make an improved step in their lives.
This invention is very cool. This may just be what people with autism spectrum disorder need in order to successfully interact socially with others.
Autistic Spectrum Disorder is a disorder where a person has difficulties in communication such as reading nonverbal cues. This article discussed the accidental invention of a college student that, in the future, may be able to help autistic people read facial expressions and other nonverbal cues. His invention is called Google Glass and it has Sension software that alerts people of other’s social cues. This could be a huge breakthrough for people with ASD because it can help them when in social interactions. ASD can be caused by a range of things ranging from environmental to biological components, and boys have a much greater chance of having ASD than what girls do. With Google Glass, there is a better chance for those with ASD to learn how to read facial cues and hopefully they can eventually be able to recognize those cues without using the Google Glass all the time.
ReplyDeleteI think that this could potentially be a huge breakthrough for people with ASD. On the other hand, there is a chance that people with ASD will not be able to learn from the Google Glass and then they are back where they started. I am sure that there is going to be much more research done on the subject, but I do hope that it helps. I cannot imagine not being able to interpret others feelings and emotions based on their expressions and social cues, so I am for anything that can help people with ASD.
Autism Spectrum Disorder is deficits in social communication and social interaction across multiple contexts. The disease ranges from failure of having a back and fourth conversation, failure to initiate or respond to social interactions. Abnormalities in eye contact and body language or deficits in understanding and use of gestures. They also might fail at giving any facial expressions. (DSM V, pg 27-31).
ReplyDeleteThe article is talking about ways that these ASD victims will be able to use this software to see emotion, facial expressions and see how someone is responding. DSM-V states " Deficits in nonverbal communication....to a total lack of facial expression." (DSM-V, pg27) So with the loss of facial expression's the client will be able to see facial expression and will be able to understand facial expression again. Although they don't want this to be a permanent fix this would be a great therapy to get the client on the right track. Some of the slides was shocking, 1 in 54 boys compared to 1in 252 girls have autism. That is some scary numbers. And if you have an identical twin with autism you are 36-95% more likely to have some affects from autism. The slide show was eye opening for me on some statistics.
I think these program could be helpful with therapy in a autistic child. It isn't something they want to use long term but for a short term therapy I think it could be very helpful. It is interesting that so many of these great things come by accident.
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a very important and special disorder in my life. I have worked with children and adults with ASD. I have a huge passion for this specific disorder and all those affected by it. What is needed most is not only for those with ASD to understand, but for the world to understand those with ASD. We need to learn as much as we can about these disorders, so we can be tolerant, loving, and understanding. With the rising rates of the diagnoses in children to 1 in 50 children and 1 in 88 boys, it breaks my heart. ASD is deficits in social communication and can also affect the social interaction children and adults have. These can be through multiple situations. This specific disorder has many different ranges. Some of these are from having problems with social interaction to conversation, hard time with eye contact, body language. Some of these can be deficits in understanding or use of gestures.
ReplyDeleteThis article reflects on the ways children and adults with ASD will be able to use software to see and understand emotion, facial expressions, and also notice the ways that someone is responding to these emotions. The invention to help with these things is called, Google Glass and it has the Sension software that helps with the recognition aspect that I discussed above. With this technology, I believe it is a huge break through, it will allow those with ASD to really feel comfortable in social situation.
Autism Spectrum Disorder is described in the DSM 5 as difficulties communicating, responding inappropriately in conversations, misreading nonverbal interactions, or having difficulty building friendships appropriate to their age. This article tells of a student who is developing a device called the Google Glass, and it is intended to help those with Autism spectrum disorder to better read people’s facial expressions. The device recognizes facial movement and tells the individual how the person is reacting. I think this would be extremely beneficial for those with Autism spectrum disorder because it will help them to communicate more easily and possibly eliminate the difficulty in determining facial expressions. It would also benefit them because it could help them to learn how to recognize these changes in facial expressions themselves without help from this device.
ReplyDeleteAutism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is becoming increasingly common in America's youth. It affects an individuals ability to communicate effectively and they often have difficulty picking up on non-verbal or social cues. ASD is more prevalent in boys than it is in girls. Catalin Voss, a freshmen at Stanford University, came across an amazing breakthrough in helping people afflicted with ASD overcome the social difficulties that they face on a daily basis. Google Glass was developed to help in educational settings and with video games, but it was quickly realized that the possibilities that it held were far greater than first anticipated. As a therapy treatment, google glass will help people suffering from ASD to capture peoples emotions as they happen so they can pick up on the social cues that they normally could not. It is a great step towards helping people suffering from ASD overcome the difficulties that they face, but it is not meant to be act as a permanent thing. The hope is that through conditioning, individuals will be able to learn the social aspects that google glass incorporates, and use them on their own to navigate through social situations.
ReplyDeleteI found this article very, very interesting as I can relate it to both my personal life and my future profession. Autism Spectrum Disorder is a disorder described in the DSM5 as having difficulties with communicating and misreading nonverbal actions, among various other classifiers. This article is about a student at Stanford University who is helping those with autism and those who fall within the diagnosis on the autism spectrum. This help is coming through the remarkable Google Glass. Google Glass is helping those who suffer with ASD by helping them better be able to read peoples facial expressions and therefore better understand their nonverbals and emotions. It really is a remarkable idea and I can definitely see how it can be a positive, useful tool for those who fall within the ASD classifications. I think this program can be very helpful and very successful. It gives hope to those affected by autism.
ReplyDeleteAutism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is classified as a complex brain disorder that causes difficulties in social interaction, both verbal and nonverbal communication, and repetitive behaviors. ASD can also include intellectual disabilities as well as motor coordination and attention difficulties. Autism is found in 1 out of 50 children, and is more prevalent in boys than in girls. While there is no cure for ASD, it can be treated with therapy, education plans, and medication. Early identification and intervention are very important.
ReplyDeleteGoogle Glass is a software tool originally designed to make online teaching tools respond to a user’s behavior, making it more interactive. For example if you look away from your iPad screen while watching a video, the video will pause. In addition you can scroll through a book using just your eyes. Google Glass however has discovered to have the ability to recognize facial movements and expression by using the facial tracker. This could be beneficial to a person who has Autism due to the fact that people with ASD typically have difficulty reading people’s facial expressions and emotions. While wearing Google Glass, an individual can have a conversation with a person while the facial tracker reads the other person’s facial expressions and tells the individual what emotion they are having, such as happy, sad, or angry.
Different types of therapy are forever changing and incorporating technology into their sessions. As a Communication Sciences and Disorders major, we do a lot of work learning about Autism Spectrum Disorder. I have done many observations in the Speech and Hearing clinic that involve children with ASD, and a lot of the time iPads are used for different activities. Most of the time when the client is learning about emotions and expressions, it has to be done through the use of pictures, which isn’t nearly as conversational as using Google Glass would be. I think this could be a potential great learning tool for these individuals, and I’m excited to see how it is used in the future!
Autism is a disorder in which people have problems comprehending facial cues and behaviors. The article discussed how a student is figuring out a new way to train brains affected with autism. It’s called Google Glasses. It recognizes facial movements. This also can be used as a great education too It can help to train the brain to recognize and teach facial movements. This tool seems like such a fantastic way to train people with ASD.I think this new innovative training tool will provide a great benefit for people with Autism.
ReplyDeleteAutism Spectrum Disorder is the term for a group of disorders of brain development that are characterized by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors.
ReplyDeleteIn summary, the article talks about Catalin Voss who set out to create facial tracking software that tracks educational content. They later learned that it tracks a lot more than that; it also is able to track emotions. This could help people with autism spectrum disorder identify facial cues. I think this is interesting that something like this has been created, but I don’t really understand the software and how they would disperse it throughout the US and also how much it would cost for a person with autism spectrum disorder.
Statistically boys are more likely to develop autism spectrum disorder than girls. I did not know there was such a huge difference in numbers between boys and girls. Also, I read that if one sibling has autism spectrum disorder than there is a chance (small) of the next child also developing the disorder. These are two facts that stuck out to me while reading through the information of autism spectrum disorder.
ReplyDeleteWhen an individual’s brain has difficulty comprehending behaviors, facial cues, and other aspects of communication, he or she is said to have Autism spectrum disorder. In the article provided, one college student has found a way to use Google’s newest technology, Google glass, to help individuals affect with ASD. He hopes to use the program to help individuals with autism learn and recognize different facial cues in others with the help of technology. By recognizing patterns of movement on people’s faces the glasses help autistic people to look and communicate with others. However, these glasses are not meant as an everyday fix, rather an educational tool that will help these patients in the real world. I think this idea is unique, brilliant, and shows just what the future can hold as technology continues to advance. We should continue looking into other uses for the technology of today and tomorrow that may be used as answers to the worlds problem’s.
