Chapter 7 discusses the concept of the self-fulfilling prophecy. This is a pretty popular term throughout psychology, so should you choose to complete this assignment for course credit, please do the following:
- What is meant by the self-fulfilling prophecy?
- Read this article.
- Summarize the article.
- What is the difference between confidence and arrogance?
- How can you use the concept of self-fulfilling prophecy in your life?
Self fulfilling prophecy is a belief that comes true because we are acting as if it is already true. This article by Carolyn Kaufman discusses how we can use self fulfilling prophecies to our advantage. If we carry ourselves with pride and confidence, chances are we are going to give off a better first impression and become more interactive when first approaching people. When marketing a specific product, have faith in yourself and your product. The outcome will be how you predicted. Enthusiasm is contagious!
ReplyDeleteConfidence is believing in yourself in a positive, healthy manner that is a useful method of showing pride in your self or work. Arrogance is the act of being presumptuous, self aggrandizing, and using overblown statements to show too much confidence. Arrogance is a deadly trait that comes off as cockiness and is not viewed as ideal by many people.
I could use the concept of self fulfilling prophecy in my life by being confident about the work and image I portray. I am a very humble person and always consider myself average or my homework average but when I work really hard on something I am confident in the outcome. I need to portray that confidence more especially with aspects of life that I am passionate about. Sometimes I need to give myself the benefit of the doubt and not be such a perfectionist. I am nowhere near being arrogant but being confident is never a bad thing.
Self-fulfilling prophecy is that a belief comes true because we are acting as if it is already true. This article describes how self-fulfilling prophecy can be used to make a positive impact on your life to help reach the goals you want and to shape the way others see you. Also, if you have faith in what you are doing and have a positive outlook you will get good feedback and will more likely be successful.
ReplyDeleteIf a person has confidence in themselves, they carry themselves well and are better able to get along and work well with other people. An arrogant person thinks that they are better than everybody else and will more likely talk down to others and not be as successful.
I can definitely see the idea of self-fulfilling prophecy helping me in life because when I do get around people I am unfamiliar with I usually shut down and become very quiet. If I gain more self confidence in myself and what I have accomplished, I could get along with strangers more easily and be ready for job interviews and working with new people in the future.
Like the article states, sometimes you just have to "fake it 'til you make it!"
DeleteSelf-fulfilling prophecy is a prediction that causes itself to come true due to the simple fact that the prediction was made. The article talks about how self-fulfilling prophecy is used to make a positive impact. Self-fulfilling prophecy can help you reach the goals that you want to achieve. Self-fulfilling prophecy can even give you more confidence.
ReplyDeleteConfidence is when someone has self- assurance and they believe in themselves. An arrogant person thinks that they are better than everyone else. They feel superior to everyone else and they usually put others down.
I can use the idea of self-fulfilling prophecy in my life, especially with school. I need to start believing that I am doing the best that I can do, when I know that I am. I need to give myself more credit for what I do.
Perhaps you are using too much social comparison. If you believe you are doing the best you can, then you just have to go with it!
DeleteThe self-fulfilling prophecy is when a belief about someone causes them to behave in ways that reinforces those expectations. It is when something becomes true simply by predicting it. The article provided gives examples of ways the self-fulfilling prophecy can be beneficial. It is not entirely a bad thing if you know how to use it to your advantage. The article states, “[o]ur expectation that we will see a particular outcome changes our behavior, which shapes the way others see us.” Basically, if you have confidence in yourself and believe in your abilities then you will behave in ways that result in that positive outcome you were hoping for. Optimism can go a long way. An example from the article describes two different ways a situation could go when attending a party, given your mindset upon arrival. If you show up to a party believing that you won’t make friends or have a decent time then chances are your behavior will reinforce that belief. You will act distant and awkward, which in turn will cause people to refrain from approaching you. On the other hand, if you arrive at the party with confidence that you will meet new people and have a great time then your enthusiasm will ensure these beliefs come true. It all depends on the path you expect the situation to follow. If you possess confidence in your abilities your mood and behavior will reflect that in a positive light. However, there is a fine line between having confidence and being arrogant. If you have confidence in yourself then you believe you are willing, capable, and determined. Confidence is a great quality to possess because it allows you to feel optimistic, which is known to increase your emotional and physical health. This only becomes a problem when your confidence turns into arrogance. Last week we were given the option to blog about narcissism. Arrogance is very similar to narcissism because it involves having an exaggerated view of oneself. People who are arrogant tend to be self-centered and believe in unrealistic things. If your thoughts are unattainable then it will only lead to disappointment when your behavior is not able to reinforce your beliefs.
ReplyDeleteI have actually seen benefits of using the self-fulfilling prophecy to my advantage already once this week. I, up until recently, was under the impression that it was beneficial for me to set lower expectations for myself when it came to test taking just so when I received the results I would be surprisingly impressed. This pessimistic behavior did not work for me because it lowers my expectations, resulting in lower test scores. I had a test on Tuesday that I have been studying for and putting forth much effort. When I got to that class I was confident that I was well prepared. I left the class with a feeling that I have not felt in quite some time, fulfillment. Simply by believing that my preparation was sufficient I was able to succeed on my test.
Sounds like you are displaying defensive pessimism, which we just discussed in class :)
DeleteSelf-fulfilling prophecy is when the expectations about a person cause the person to behave in ways that confirm the expectations about them. What it means is that if you have an opinion about someone, and then act on that opinion towards them, they'll act upon your opinion and become the person you perceive them to be. An example is if you were to hear your friend singing in the car, and then ask her if she's ever considered trying out for a solo, because you thought she was good. She'd try out for the solo and get the solo, because she believed she is a good singer too because of her friend thinking so and making the recommendation to try out.
ReplyDeleteThe article says that the self-fulfilling prophecy works, and that going into something with confidence is going to help you in the long wrong. You of course need to be realistic, but if you start a paper knowing you can write a good paper, you'll probably write a good paper. If you compete in a highly competitive golf game having never played golf and go into it thinking you can win, on the other hand... It probably won't work in your favor. If you are realistic, confident, and humble, you are likely to produce better work because you'll be free of worry or anxiety of the result of the work, and more enthusiastic about putting your potentially good work out there. You have to be sure to be confident, not arrogant. Arrogance is like exaggeration, which is not being realistic. Confidence and humility, as the article said, can go in hand.
I was a very successful runner in high school. I didn't train in the summer, I didn't train half as hard as other girls during the season... but I did make very good use of the self-fulfilling prophecy. I went out for cross country because someone told me I'd be good. I believed I would be good. Turned out I was very good, and even if I hadn't trained maybe as hard as the other girls, I believed that the training I did was going to get me the win, and it did many times. My senior year, I was overcome with an injury and a growth spurt. After performing horribly in my first race of the season, I think that I THOUGHT that everyone thought I was going to do horribly for the rest of the season. Therefore, I gave up mentally. I haven't been a good runner ever since, and I think if I could somehow get back into using this prophecy and be more enthusiastic and confident, I could get back to where I was one day, despite my setbacks. I think this could also help me while studying. Lately I've had such a pessimistic attitude towards my tests and whatnot, and I haven't been performing very well... But I remember last year handing in a paper during finals week that I was enthusiastic about writing, because I knew I was a pretty decent writer. I wish I could feel the way I did about that paper about all of my homework, I think I'd be doing a lot better in school.
Awesome application, Kelsey! Part of making changes is acknowledging changes need made and having insight into how to change them. Sounds like you are ready to put the concept of self-fulfilling prophecy to the test!
DeleteA self-fulfilling prophecy is where one already believes wholeheartedly in a particular outcome. This will result in the person already taking actions as if their belief has already taken place. Some examples of this could be the ending of a relationship. If one keeps telling themselves that it isn’t going to work. Soon they will be putting up walls and eventually their self fulfilling prophecy can come true. People that have positive self-fulfilling prophecies will typically have higher self esteem and are able to handle setback better. This means that they will have stronger coping mechanisms. People with negative self-fulfilling prophecies could have a more negative self-image.
ReplyDeleteThe article discusses self-fulfilling prophecy from numerous viewpoints. The first toping the article covered is the Pygmalion Effect. This is a big circle that includes our beliefs, our actions, others beliefs, and others actions. Within this circle, it was shown that our beliefs influence our actions. In turn our actions impact others’ beliefs. Their beliefs cause their actions, and their actions reinforce our beliefs. This article then outlines a few examples of self-fulfilling prophecy. The first example was the attitude one takes into a party. If someone is nervous and reserved, they are more likely to not be included. However, if a person is outgoing, they are more likely to make new friends and have fun. Overall, this article outlines that self-image is directly related to self-image and self-esteem.
The difference between confidence and arrogance is something else that was outline in the article. The article states that confidence is pretty useful, whereas arrogance is not. If someone is over the top in self-confidence and makes overblown statements, they are arrogant and will not win the respect of others. as a matter of fact, humility associated with confidence can go much farther. Overall, it is good to be confident. However, when confidence is taken to the extremes (arrogance) it is no longer helpful.
I believe that self-fulfilling prophecy can have a major impact on my life. After reading this article, I better understand the need to not think negative things. It is so much more beneficial to think positively about your future. Especially because self-fulfilling prophecy states the way we think could impact our future successes or failures.
Self-fulfilling prophecy is when you predict something about yourself that would normally not come true but you change your ways or thoughts so that it does come true.
ReplyDeleteThe article talks about what a self-fulfilling prophecy is and how it affects you. They also say the benefits of it and how it can help you in situations. An example was that if you go into a party thinking no one will talk to you and you won’t make friends, then you probably won’t. one reason because your walking in with little confidence and people will get that feeling. If you go in thinking im good with people im easy to talk to then you probably will talk and meet new people.
Confidence is when you believe in yourself that you can do something. Also most people are confident when they are comfortable either with themselves or the situation. Arrogance is when you over promote yourself and think you’re better than everyone else. I think that arrogant people are sometimes self-conscious so they feel that they have to overdo and one up everything. I could use the self-fulfilling prophecy in my life when I’m studying for calc. I need to tell myself that I’ll do fine on the test and I studied enough now I just have to do it.

ReplyDeleteSelf-fulfilling prophecy is when one believes that they already know the outcome of an event. For example, if I feel as though there is no way in which I will pass a test, then I am setting myself up for failure. The article turns this bad idea around. In the article, it states that if we hold ourselves with a high self-confidence, chances are we will do better. The article states that with confidence, anything is possible. Without confidence, we shut ourselves down. Arrogance, however, can hurt us even more. Arrogance is believing that you truly are better than everyone. I was a dancer and after sustaining some major knee injuries, I would hate competing. I would get so nervous and I would over analyze every jump and leap. It would hurt my score tremendously. Eventually, I realized my mistake. After I tried to focus my positive energy on having fun, I was winning again. Once I read this article, I immediately thought of my competitive dance years. Dance definitely taught me to believe in myself!
ReplyDelete“A self-fulfilling prophecy is a belief that comes true because we are acting as if it is already true” (Kaufman, 2012). Its when a person believes one outcome will occur, like getting a bad grade on a test, and then get really bad anxiety before the test, so the anxiety and belief that they were going to do badly causes them to do badly. The article by Kaufman discusses self-fulfilling prophecies and how our perception on life can change how our lives turn out. If we “fake it [happiness] until we make it” then eventually our lives become happy (Kaufman, 2012). Kaufman does warn against becoming too arrogant. Having confidence in yourself and believing that you will do well in life and your accomplishments is a good thing, but believing that you are the best at everything and exhibing narcisstic behavior will only drive people away and actually have the oppostive effects i.e. make people dislike you. Sometimes some modesty is a good thing. The way that self-fulfilling prophecies are good for real life is say you go to a party or a job interview where you have to make a good first impression, if yo pretend to be comfortable and relaxed, you are more likely to make friends or get the job than someone who acts awkward and uncomfortable. This is easier said than done, but good advice all the same.
ReplyDeleteSelf-fulfilling prophecy is the expectations about a person cause him or her to believe in ways that confirm the expectations. The article talks about how we use self-fulfilling prophecy in your advantage. If you carry yourself as a confident person you are more likely to give off that you are a confident person and people with most likely want to get to know you, but if you are not a confident person people are going to pick up on that and could possibly not be very nice or try to boss you around. There is a big difference between confidence and arrogance. Arrogance is when you believe you are truly better then someone else. In high school I was a pretty good basketball player and was one of the more athletic girls in the school but the summer before my senior year I tore my ACL and other ligaments in my knee. The first game I could play I was so nervous of the arrogant people in the school about saying something to me because I couldn't play the same right away. But as the season went on basketball got be fun again like it was before everything and I remained confident in myself and everyone saw that and didn't say anything to me. I think that I used the self-fulfilling prophecy here in school but I will also use it in the future. Almost blowing out my knee ant 18 taught me to be some much stronger and believe in myself and realize that hard works really pays off!
ReplyDeleteA self-fulfilling prophecy is something that becomes true because we are already acting as if it true. The article summarizes the concept of self-fulfilling prophecy. It applies to the age old adage of “faking it till you make it.” The article also discusses the difference between confidence and arrogance. Confidence is useful while arrogance is not. Confidence is being proud of yourself and your work in a healthy manner. Most people appreciate and value confidence but arrogance, self-importance and egotism is considered a fault. I can definitely use the concept of self-fulfilling prophecy is my life. Believing in myself and having a positive outlook will be helpful. Usually, if you believe in yourself, a large component of self-fulfilling prophecy, your stress is reduced and you are happier. We have already discussed the benefits of both of these in class, so utilizing self-fulfilling prophecy will have positive impacts in my life!
ReplyDeleteI've always been intrigued by the concept of self-fulfilling prophecy. Simply put, a self-fulfilling prophecy is the idea that something comes true because we are already acting as if it is true. If we believe that we will do well in something, we probably will, and vice versa. Positive self prophecies cause individuals to have higher self-esteem about the event and therefore more confidence and positive feelings toward whatever they believe will happen; negative self prophecies cause people to become anxious or depressed about what will happen and thus usually yielding a negative outcome.
ReplyDeleteThis article discusses self-fulfilling prophecy as the Pygmalion Effect, or a circle of our actions and beliefs between ourselves and others have impact, influence, and cause and reinforce certain behaviors and beliefs. It also gives the "fake it 'til you make it" quote and says it's actually good advice. Having a good attitude about something (even if you have to basically give your peptalk and make yourself have a good attitude about something) will make that something a better experience. Being positive sparks confidence and having faith.
It also discusses why confidence and arrogance are different. Confidence is great--it's healthy and it's good, but taking it too far and being arrogant is not. Arrogance is exaggerating and being overly confident. It's best to have confidence AND humility.
The concept of self-fulfilling prophecy can be very beneficial in my life. Sometimes you really do just have to "fake it until you make it", and having a good attitude about things I don't really want to do will make them just a little more appealing. Believing in myself as well as having confidence in the things I am doing will positively impact my future as big decisions are being made over the next few months!
Self-fulfillment prophecy is a person’s expectations leading up to the actual way a person behaves. The expression of particular thoughts can cause a person’s behavior to change and coincide with their previous thoughts. For example, if a student is nervous and unsure about their exam they have today, then they may receive a poor grade due to the thoughts before the exam. The student may not feel confident and nervous about their selected answers.
ReplyDeleteThe article explains an example about a person going to a party and exemplifying two different thoughts of themselves. The person either thinks that they are or are not good with people. The end results exemplify the person’s thoughts before the party. The article also explains an example about writing a professional letter. Depending on the persons thoughts about their own abilities can change the outcome of the letter. A person with confidence will shine through farther than a person with arrogance.
I can use self-fulfillment prophecy in many ways pertaining to school. Whether it is writing a paper, typing a blog, or saying a speech, having the thoughts of doing well will improve my work. The ability to show confidence in my work could lead to a better outcome in my grades and GPA. Another area self-fulfillment prophecy can help would be during my time of meeting new people. Depending on the situation or location, I can be very shy and standoffish. This could result in a person that doesn't want to talk to anyone because they are nervous of the outcome. I need to be more open with who I am and accept that everyone has their own opinions about my personality and character.
A self-fulfilling prophecy is a belief that comes true because we are acting as if it is already true” (Kaufman, 2012). So, it is when a person predicts something about themselves that would not normally come true, but the person changes their thoughts so that is does actually come true. This article discuses what a self-fulfilling prophecy is and how it can positively or negatively affect a person's life. Such as if we hold ourselves to higher standards, we can come out on top. All a person needs is confidence in them and they are more likely to succeed. This article also discusses how important confidence, because without it, we more often than not, begin to shut ourselves down. There is a downside to too much confidence, which is arrogance. This arrogance can really hurt us and those around us very much. Arrogance is when a person believes they are truly better than those around them. After reading this article, it truly made me appreciate all those around me and that where I am weak others are strong and are able to make me strong, along with where others are weak I am strong and can help them.
ReplyDeleteSelf-fulfilling prophecy is a prediction that directly or indirectly causes itself to become true. If you believe something to be true, then it more than likely will become true. Our actions towards others impacts other beliefs about us that causes others actions towards us when then reinforces our beliefs about ourselves that then leads back to influence our actions towards others. If on goes to a party thinking that they are not good at meeting new people, then they are most likely going to be awkward and stand-offish when it comes to being at the party. That then reinforces their belief that they aren’t good with people that they don’t know. However, if it is switched and you believe that you are outgoing and good with strangers, then you will portray as a friendlier person. This also goes along with a project because if you believe that a project is strong and you feel confident about it then you will probably write a strong and confident letter. You will be more motivated to find an agent interested in your project. In contrast, the opposite may come true if you are uncertain about your project. Then each rejection will make you less and less confident in your project and could end up in a flop. If you are enthusiastic in a project then it is more likely to succeed because enthusiasm is contagious.
ReplyDeleteConfidence is a state of being certain that a prediction is correct or that a chosen course of action is the best or most effective. However, arrogance is having unmerited confidence by believing something or someone is capable or correct when they are not. Confidence is good and can help one through a tough spot when they know that they can do it, but arrogance is not good because then you believe that you are better than everyone else and then you think you can do anything.
I can use self-fulfilling prophecy in my life by thinking that I will get good grades if I study, so then I study and have a positive outlook on the test and do better than if I was to think I would fail. Same goes for my relationships with others, if I think that they will be good and we will always be there for each other, then we will have a more satisfying relationship with each other because we know that we don’t have to worry about the other one not being there for us.
Self-fulfilling prophecy is when a person unknowingly alters their behavior and creates situations, positive or negative, about circumstances, events, or people. The article discusses how to use self-fulfilling prophecies to your advantage. The author believes that the “fake it ‘til you make it” is actually good advice since we act subconsciously on our thoughts. For example, if you have faith and confidence in your writing skills, chances are that your writing will be strong and you can get more reputable agents to market your project or book. The author warns us that there is a difference between confidence and arrogance. Finding the balance between them is crucial, but takes time and learning. At the end, the author encourages us to think about how self-fulfilling prophecies can be used in our writing lives and how they may be holding us back.
ReplyDeleteConfidence is having good self-esteem in yourself and your abilities. It’s the feeling/belief that a person and can rely and trust in someone or something. Arrogance is when a person has an overbearing sense of self-worth or self-importance. They have excessive pride and feelings of superiority. I’ve used the concept of self-fulfilling prophecy in my life in school and sports. I try to have positive thoughts about tests or sporting events, hoping that I will see the results I want. If I am confident in the classroom and pool, I will subconsciously act towards an optimal outcome.
Self-fulfilling prophecy is occurs when others expect a person to act a certian way based on other experiences, so they treat them a certain way which causes them to behave so the expectation is confirmed.
ReplyDeleteThe author of the article "Using Self-Fulfilling Prophecies to Your Advantage" discusses what self-fulfilling prophecy is and gives a couple of examples. For example if you are going to write a paper and you think you are going to do bad and you only have bad thoughts about the paper, then you are probably going to do bad on the paper. But, if you are enthusiastic about the paper and you think you are going to do well, you will probably do well. Whatever a person believes is going to affect how they act and how others see them. Like the article says, "Fake it till you make it!" So if you want to do well at something you need to change your attitude and believe that you are going to do well and you will do well!
Confidence is being able to believe in yourself. You will be able to bounce back if you make a mistake and try hard and believe that you are going to do better the next time. Being confident is a good thing! It is the believe that you can rely and yourself or others. Arrogance is being overconfident and thinking that you are better than everyone else. It is having an exaggerated belief that you are more important than others.
From this article I have learned what self-fulfilling prophecy is and that if you believe you are going to do well at something than you will. I will now be able to use the self-fulfilling prophecy more in my life. I will use it on tests and homework assignments. I usually go into tests feeling scared and that I am going to do bad. I will have to change my attitude! In the article it also gave the example about going to a party and thinking that you are not going to make friends and socialize than you won't. But, if you have a more positive attitude and want to make friends and socialize you will. I think I can also use the self-fulfilling prophecy in my every day life and when meeting others.
Carolyn Kaufman's article on self-fulfilling prophecy defines the concept as a belief that comes true because we are acting as if it is already true. Putting the self-fulfilling prophecy into action is quite straightforward, and useful in various situations. For example, if you are to attend a party where you hardly know anyone and get nervous about making a good first impression, it is likely that you will act awkward and anxious; this is because you have determined that you will not be good with people you don't know and therefore act in a way that mirrors such beliefs. Similarly, stepping into a room with an air of confidence is bound to generate a better reaction. Others attending the party are will be more willingly drawn to an individual who acts outgoing and enthusiastic about meeting others. As stated by the author, self-fulfilling prophecy is also useful in various forms of writing.
ReplyDeleteThe article closes with a statement about the usefulness of confidence in comparison to arrogance. Confidence is an essential part of self-fulfilling prophecy because it requires that you believe you are capable of succeeding; the two go hand-in-hand. Arrogance, however, is an air of superiority and exaggerated self-worth that will essentially be detrimental to self-fulfilling prophecy.
As a not-so-outgoing person, the concept of self-fulfilling prophecy would be useful in personal situations where I am surrounded by unfamiliar people. I need to be better about accepting the fact that people will generally open up to me if I'm willing to do the same for them. Therefore, if I were to enter a room with the firm belief that it's going to be a good experience, I could have a much better time.
A self-fulfilling prophecy is an idea that someone thinks and in time, it becomes true, because they truly believe that it’s true. In the article, the author just gives examples of a self-fulfilling prophecy, stating how the particular belief will either work out in your favor or not. Confidence and arrogance are along the same line, but there is a fine line that separates the two. Confidence is feeling good about yourself and carrying yourself in a good way; while arrogance is taking that to the next level and acting like you are the best thing to happen to this planet.
ReplyDeleteA self-fulfilling prophecy could work out well for me, especially since I am a college student or just a student in general. Since grades are rather important and sometimes tests make or break your grades, walking into a test thinking “I know what I’m doing, I’m going to ace this test, I know all about what is on the test,” you will more than likely do fairly well on the particular exam.
Self-fulfilling prophecy is what a person thinks is going to happen so they act in a specific way so it becomes true. The article "Using Self-Fulfilling Prophecies to Your Advantage" talks about the model of a self-fulfilling prophecy and further explains it by using examples. The article talks about first impressions on what ever a person their mind to comes true. That is why the article states "fake it till you make it" works good for advice. Confidence is believing in yourself through an action or belief. Arrogance is belief or action you believe is true but it not for example they think highly of themselves even though is in not true.
ReplyDeleteI can use the self-fulfilling prophecy in my life when I think about being a college student but more specifically a nursing student. Going through the next couple years saying that I will succeed in my nursing classes and clinicals, so when I go to take the nursing boards I will have the confidence knowing I will pass.
A self-fulfilling prophecy is a belief that comes true because we are acting as if it is already true, some are now calling it The Law of Attraction. It is that idea that our expectations will shape our behavior, which shapes the way others see us. For example if you go into a party looking to make new friends, you will be more outgoing, engaging, and personable; opposed to going to a party thinking you will not have fun. This can effect more than your personal life. It can affect your business life. When you are confident about your project, you exude that confidence and make others believe in your work the same way you do. There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance. Confidence is the feeling or belief that you can accomplish something while arrogance is the belief that you are superior to others in an overbearing manner. The biggest difference humility, one can be confident and be humble at the same time; they cannot be arrogant and humble at the same time. I can use the self-fulfilling prophecy in my life by having more confidence and be more outgoing and engaging with others. I almost didn't do this post because the article brought up the film The Secret, which I thought was a huge scheme and crock of excrement. It was good to see scientific logic opposed to the mysticism
ReplyDeleteA self-fulfilling prophecy is when someone believes that they know what an outcome of an event will be so they act in a way that suits that outcome. For example, if someone walks into a party and does not feel like they are very social, they are more likely to come off as standoffish. Self-fulfilling prophecy follows the saying, “fake it ‘til you make it.” This means that if you believe in yourself and are confident, then you will more than likely carry yourself that way and others will notice that about you.
ReplyDeleteThere is a huge difference between a person being confident and being arrogant. If someone were getting ready to take a test and they felt that they knew the material well enough to do well on the test; that is being confident. Someone who walks in the room saying that they are going to blow this test out of the water because they are the smartest person alive would be called arrogant. There is a point in believing that you are good enough to accomplish tasks, and then there is thinking that you are the best and you do not have to worry about anything because you are that good.
The best thing that I can use self-fulfilling prophecy for is my tests and quizzes. I am usually one who goes into an exam really nervous and not sure of my abilities to pass. If I would have a little more confidence in myself and tell myself that I will do just fine, I think I would have a better outcome on my exams and quizzes. Usually, I do fine and can get past my nerves, but there are some times when the fear takes over and do not do as well as I could have. Hopefully, I can better myself and raise my confidence to help make my schooling less stressful.
Self-fulfilling prophecy is when someone has their mind set on how a situation will end, making the possibility of it ending in the pre-conceived way much more possible. The article explains this by giving examples such as strong writers believing they have a strong paper as they are writing it ending in a strong paper.
ReplyDeleteConfidence can be very useful, while arrogance is not so much. Confidence in yourself during a project can lead to very positive results, while arrogance is more over-the-top confidence that will make you appear more stand-offish, which will never get you far.
The idea of a self-fulfilling prophecy can apply to me through my classes and the effort I put into them. I went into my Bio class freshman year with a very negative mindset, and ended up not doing very well. Through positive thoughts and hard work I know I can improve my results in school.
a self fulfilling prophecy is when you believe something to be true and act as if it is already true then it becomes true because your mindset had you make the appropriate actions to attract the said outcome.
ReplyDeleteThe article showed the model of the self fulfilling prophecy and compared it to the law of attraction displayed in the secret. and gives credit to the fake it till you make it method using a party or social scene as an example, the aricle stated if you go into a party expecting to be social and act in that manner you will get lively responses from people reinforcing that behavior. on the other hand it explained being reserved in a social situation and drawing the attention or lack of that would enforce that behavior. It goes on to speak about writing and how a writers faith in themselves comes to play if the believe in what they have to say and what they are putting out there they will be more enthusiastic in both there writing and promotion of there work, and the other hand doubt drawing poor performance and poor promotion.
confidence is a belief in yourself and faith in your abilities, Arrogance is a false belief of being superior to others and rather cocky and prideful in your approach, someone who is confidant can still maintain a sense of humility
I can use the self fulfilling prophecy to further perpetuate my confidence in areas that I lack further enforcing my belief in optimism and promoting me to project who I want to be.
Self fulfilling prophecy is a belief that comes true because we believe that it is already in fact true. This article explains how you can use self-fulfilling prophecy to your advantage. If you think that you are going to do well on a project or an exam, there is a better chance that you actually will. In contrast, if you think that you are going to fail, you probably won’t do as well on the exam as you would if you were more positive! This ties into our previous topic of pessimism vs. optimism, in which people who had a more pessimistic outlook were not only less stressed, but more likely to be more successful in whatever they were doing. This faith that you have in yourself to succeed can be portrayed as either confidence or arrogance. While being confident and believing in yourself can help you to be more motivated, being arrogant and presumptuous about how well you do something is not as useful. I can use the self-fulfilling prophecy by having more confidence going into exams, and believing that I will succeed on these exams.
ReplyDeleteA self-fulfilling prophecy is a belief that comes true because a person was acting like it was true. If a person believe that they will have a bad time doing something they are not looking for the positive points in what they are doing they are only looking at the negatives to help them prove their original thought. The same happens when a person is looking on the bright side, they will ignore the negatives because they are just looking for the positive point on what every they are doing. This article talks about the “fake it ‘til you make it” attitude, which in my own life is very helpful. I work at Hyvee and a big part about work is “a helpful smile in every aisle”. And most of the time I am pretty cheerful person and don’t have a hard time with this but there are some days where I am in a bad mood. It doesn’t matter to the boss if I am in a bad mood or not I just need to fake being happy and helpful. Now this does sound strange but in doing this it is hard to be mad and still put on that face so I usually just become happy. The article also goes into the difference of confidence and arrogance. When looking at one’s self and trying to be the best you can be it would be easy to fall in to this false sense of confidence, the thought of being better they you could even imagine. While this is good in some steps of life, when it comes others this is not a useful tool. In order to keep yourself in check you must have confidence but a sense of humility as you go through life and be all you can be.
ReplyDeleteA self-fulfilling prophecy is a prediction that comes true, because someone thinks that the prediction is already true it can enable someone to actually achieve what is not actually true. The article basically just states what a self-fulfilling prophecy is and then gave an example of how it would and would not work in an author/publisher scenario. Arrogance is an exaggerated sense of one’s own abilities and importance, whereas confidence is just a firm trust in one’s own ability to do well. I can use the idea of self – fulfilling prophecy in my life in many ways. It can be something small like telling myself that I will get an A on my next exam, or something big like, I’m going to get my degree within the next two years. I think that using this on many aspects of one’s life would be a good thing.
ReplyDeleteSelf-fulfilling prophecy means that you have a belief that something will come true because of your actions and beliefs that it is already true. The article gave scenarios of self-fulfilling prophecies. The article stated that if you have confidence when you go to a party then you will have a good time and most likely make friends but if you act like a wallflower then you will seem like an outcast or an outsider. The author of the article went on to state that if you feel like you did well while writing a paper then you the outcome will be good and vice-versa if you don't feel like you are not going to do well writing a paper. Confidence is when you feel like you are doing a good job at something while arrogance is when you know you are good at something and you are showing off at whatever you are good at. I could use the self-fulfilling prophecy in my life by having more confidence in my school work, my job, and social life which in turn can help me be more optimistic.

Self-fulfilling prophecy is positive or negative expectations about circumstances, events, or people that may affect a person’s behavior toward them in a manner that he or she creates situations in which those expectations are fulfilled. ReplyDeleteConfidence is having trust or faith in a person or thing and arrogance is the belief that you are better and smarter than other people. I think there are probably many ways in which I can use self-fulfilling prophecy in my life like when I am studying for a test, I need to start believing in myself before the test and tell myself that I am going to do well and maybe the confidence and positivity I am giving myself will help with my test scores.
A self-fulfilling prophecy is a belief or idea that you have that actually turns into a true thing. If you think you are going to enjoy or dislike something, because you have that mindset going in, you are probably going to enjoy or dislike it because you already had that mindset. The article relates this theory to that of the fake it till you make it model, which shows that say you are writing a paper, and you chose to believe that you are going to have a strong paper, you will most likely write a strong paper. Personally I believe this is true because I have seen this in my own work. When I think I am going to struggle I do, but when I push to succeed I succeed. The article strongly supports this and shows that you attitude has a lot to do with the overall project.
ReplyDeleteA self-fulfilling prophecy is a belief that comes true because we are acting as if it is already true. The article looks at how our expectation of an outcome changes our behavior in the situation at hand. The mental expectation of how the situation will turnout causes us to project those unconscious feelings into the public, causing the outcome to come true. The difference between confidence and arrogance is that confidence is believing in yourself and your own abilities and arrogance is believing that those abilities make you superior to everyone else. I can use the concept of self-fulfilling prophecy in my own life by using it to work on becoming more outgoing. I am naturally a shy and fairly introverted person. I just need to focus on believing that I am outgoing and confident and hopefully the prophecy will fulfill itself. If that doesn’t work I can always fake it until I make it and fake confidence.
ReplyDeleteA self-fulfilling prophecy is something that a person will tell themselves and believe it. If a person believes something and acts as if it is already true, then that person will morph into their personal belief without even technically recognizing that it is happening. The author of the article brings up the long known phrase 'fake it till you make it'. This actually has truth behind it due to the fact that if people simply have the mindset that they know what they are doing, then more often than not, people will have more confidence in what they are doing leading to success. Confidence is feeling good about yourself and believing you are capable of succeeding. Arrogance is believing you are able to do something, but without putting forth enough work or dedication. Arrogance is confidence without a reality check. I learned to take advantage of self-fulfilling prophecy at an early age because it is truly helpful. In any situation, such as a new job or through school, it is beneficial for everyone giving them more confidence in their abilities.
