Stereotyping on TV

Stereotypes are all around us, yet we often don't realize.  This could be a fun and eyeopening experience for you, so have some fun with it!  Should you choose to complete this assignment for credit, please complete the following:
  • What is a stereotype?
  • Why do stereotypes exist?  Do you think they are positive or negative?
  • Go to YouTube and find a clip of a television show that displays some sort of stereotype.  Please include a link to your video.
  • Describe the stereotype in your clip.  What do you think of this stereotype and what implications does it have for members of the stereotyped group?

  1. A stereotype is a thought that has been adopted about specific types of individuals. Stereotypes exist because people around the world today are constantly judging other people. Either it be their looks or their personality, people are constantly being judged. I think that stereotypes can be both positive and negative, but I think that most of the time the stereotypes are negative.

The clip here is from Mean Girls. The stereotype in this clip is that the preppy, popular, and pretty looking girls in the high school are mean but at the same time, everyone still wants to be them. I think that this stereotype is very typical of a high school and that most people are used to it. The members of the stereotyped group in this situation probably enjoy being stereotyped because they know that they are being talked about and all the attention is on them.

    1. There are actually quite a few stereotypes in this clip. Regina doesn't believe Katey is from African, probably because of the color of her skin. Karen also asks her why she is White if she's from Africa. Additionally, she uses the"r" word. Lastly, she can't believe that Katey is home-schooled because she is pretty.

I have seen this movie so many times and haven't caught all of these things before. Goes to show that we are used to hearing these stereotypes without even realizing they are being used.

  2. A stereotype is a view of a person or group of people that is usually oversimplified and incorrect. These stereotypes are often based on a persons looks or personality. I believe the idea of stereotypes arose because people are uncomfortable with those who are different from themselves. I think that stereotypes are negative because they are usually wrong and can be very offensive to some people and/or groups.

This is a clip from the tv show Honey Boo Boo. The stereotype shows here is that Honey Boo Boo and her family are rednecks. The stereotype is that they aren't very well educated and they do not have much money. They also show the stereotype of pageants where they completely makeover little girls and they parents get overly involved.

  3. A stereotype is a widely held belief that people have certain characteristics because of their membership in a particular group. Stereotypes exist because environmental and social factors encourage them. Stereotypes are also functional. I believe that stereotypes are a bad thing. Passing judgement before you truly get to know someone is generally not a good thing because of it's inaccuracy.

This clip from 30 Rock of Tracy Jordan is full of stereotyping. Tracy Jordan is a black male in a therapy session hosted by Tracy's boss, Jack and a counselor. Tracy is to talk his issues out about his father. Tracy then goes to say that his father worked at a factory and it sounds like he had "daddy issues." This stereotypes that black families don't usually have the father in the picture and live on welfare (which is also stated in the video). It sounds more like racial profiling to me, which is very similar to stereotyping.

  4. A stereo type is a thing that categorizes people by what they look like or how they dress without knowing the real person. I believe stereotypes exist because people believe what society tells them to believe and also when someone knows a person that looks a certain way and acts a certain way, they automatically think that the next person that looks the same will act that same way good or bad. I think that stereotyping can be both negative and positive. It can be positive if someone sees themselves as a good person or a person that dresses a certain way, they could stereotype themselves and be encouraged to be a good person. The negative side of stereotyping is that people will judge others just because of how they dress. This is negative because they don’t know for sure how that person acts or who that person is, and this could hurt that persons feelings.

Si is stereotyped as a crazy Vietnam vet. I think that this stereotype is usually said as a joke but should be taken seriously. Most of those men and women came back with severe PTSD and have psychological issues. I think that when others stereotype this group of people it makes them feel different and makes them feel bad about themselves.

  5. A stereotype is a category that a person or group is put into based on others views and preconceived thoughts without knowing that person. I think that stereotypes exist because of the fundamental attribution error that our society holds and believes in. I also believe that it is because our society and people in it are very judgmental. I think that stereotypes can be positive or negative. A positive stereotype for instance can be someone categorized as "innocent". Although it may be seen as a bad thing for some people, it can be positive as well. A negative stereotype can be based on race.

I chose a Jersey Shore clip. The stereotype of this show is that people from New Jersey are super tan/orange, wear scandalous clothing, and are trying to hook up with people with no cares in the world. I don't know if I fully believe in the stereotype because it is a reality TV show. I don't think that everyone who lives in Jersey looks and acts like those girls or guys but that creates a negative image and stereotype for the other people who are nothing like those on the TV show.

  6. The book defines a stereotype as a widely held belief that people have certain characteristics because of their membership in a group. Stereotypes exist for various reasons. The media and society tell us and encourage us to act and think in certain ways or to be a certain person. When someone acts against what we consider the "norm" by society's standards, we make assumptions about them and judge them. They can also originate from the individual instead of society. We compare ourselves to others and create our own stereotypes to attribute our beliefs about that person to something. Stereotypes are usually negative because they are created through ill intentions and thoughts.
I included two clips because they are both short. They are from How I Met Your Mother.

In the clips, members of the group make fun of Canada and say that nobody takes their country seriously. They talk funny, have "monopoly money", all they do is play hockey, their government is "backwards" and they have low intelligence. The country is made fun of every now and then throughout the show. Since it is a comedy, it is not to be taken seriously. Although it is not the show's intention, I'm sure there are some people who do take offense to the stereotypes portrayed on the show. The key thing to remember is that stereotypes are hardly ever applicable to the actual person.

  7. A stereotype is the way a person is portrayed based on certain characteristics they have. Like how blondes are dumb or that cheerleaders are always peppy and only date the jocks. There are always those few people who meet the stereotypical qualities and that just makes it worse for everyone else that is associated with that group or has a certain hair color. Stereotypes exist because at one point in time, something happened that made it stick with us forever. Also, everyone recognizes stereotypes. In television shows and commercials, stereotypes are used because everyone understands them and recognizes them. It gets the point across without having to explain it.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43hTnOQOIsM
This is a clip from the TV show The Middle. The oldest son is a jock and he’s the stereotypical dumb jock type of character. He’s also a boy and that doesn’t know anything about things that aren’t “guy stuff.” In the clip he has a baby doll and the way he handles it is just how a stereotypical guy would handle it. He holds it upside down and by one leg and then proceeds to plop the baby right on the counter. There’s no affection and he is absolutely clueless about the assignment. I think it’s one of the most known stereotypes and that everyone can recognize it. I think that guys who are in sports don’t enjoy this stereotype because then everyone assumes that they are dumb without knowing who they actually are.

  9. A stereotype is a thought or idea about a person or culture which has no previous background or truth. Stereotypes exist because at one time this may have been a true. Like the stereotype that "blondes are stupid" this may have been true at one time for one blonde. He or she may have said something that didn't make sense or was strange. However, now, it has no factual evidence. Although, we all know what stereotypes are, it is difficult to stop them because they happen so frequently.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzt7oCFN3ek

The clip I found wad of the show "Honey Boo Boo." In the show, they are portrayed as "red necks." However, it can be said that this is vastly over dramatized for T.V purposes. The show also makes everyone believe that all people who live in the south are "Red Neck." Furthermore, to a viewer, anyone from that area, hunts, digs in the garbage and burps in public. I know that in this stereotype is wrong because I am from the South and I've never hunted in my life and my family definitely doesn't act or talk like that!

  10. A stereotype is a belief that a person is and acts a certain way because of who they hang out with, where they came from, and even where they live without actually knowing the person. I believe that stereotypes exists because of the Fundamental attribution error. Also because our society is hooked on the social media and what they see and hear is what they believe. I see this as a huge problem in our society because of how advanced our technology is getting and how many people are on the internet. If women see that they are to be size zero and where lots of make-up than that is destroying many of their self-esteems. This goes for guys if they see that they need to have six packs and drive nice cars just to get a date. I believe that stereotyping can also lead to prejudice. Since a certain group hangs out in a certain area and they wear certain clothes and they happen to be black or what have you a person may take that for them being in a gang. These are all preconceived ideas about a person and people are not willing to get to know each other because of what they saw on the internet and they believe it.

This clip is from the movie Mean Girls. Cady is given a seating chart of the lunch room to show her where to sit and where not to sit. It shows how in high school people are stereotyped by where they sit at lunch. It matters who you are around to be declared popular, a geek, or a no body. There are other categories in between as well and it all depends on what those characteristics are of those people. In the end there is a good place to sit during lunch, at the popular table, versus sitting with the geeks and being known as a no body. I do believe that this stereotype does happen on a daily basis in schools today. I feel that this type of stereotype has a negative impact on kids. They feel that if they are not popular they will never be able to talk to them because they are not as pretty or as cool as they are. This will lower kids’ self-esteem and make them feel bad. However for the popular kids they will feel empowered and enjoy all the attention that they are receiving from the other kids.

  11. Stereotype is a widely held but fixed image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. Stereotypes exist because of past experiences with situations and also the environment a person was raised in and the people that they surround themselves with. Stereotypes are associated with negative beliefs and thinking and I think stereotypes are negative. The clip I found on youtube that shows an example of stereotyping is that of Seinfield. The stereotype describes black people as being late for everything. In the scene a black is shown sleeping past his alarm and being late for work. He is assumed to be slacking off because of his tardiness. The implication that this stereotype has on the group is that it puts the attention specifically on them. More attention will be put on them to see if they mess up compared to another group who might be doing worse at being tardy but the focus is not really put on them so they get away with it. The stereotyped might mess up once and that turns into a false thinking that they are going to keep that pattern of behavior all the time.

  12. Stereotypes are beliefs that people have certain characteristics because of their membership in a particle group, and most are not true. I think that depending on the stereotype they can be both positive and negative. I think it also depend on how the person that is being stereotyped take or respond to it. Like for me having red hair I hear everything about having it, but I don't let anything like that bother me because I don't care what most people think and I do like the color of my hair.

This clip is the trailer to the movie Mean Girls. This shows that the popular girls are good looking and mean but yet everyone wants to be just like them. I think that this movie is so how high school, all the people who are not noticed want to be just like the one that are noticed even though those same people could be so mean to someone who is so nice. This movie also has a stereotype of dumb blonds. Every time Karen talks so does not sounds smart at all and they make it so someone is always correcting her pointing it out that she is dumb. In this movie everyone wants to be a plastic even though they are the meanest girls in the school.

  13. A stereotype is a thought about a specific group of people and/or the way they perform certain activities. Stereotypes usually are not accurate for everyone in these ‘groups’ of people.

Stereotypes exist because we as humans like to group things for simplicity and understanding in our lives. I personally think that stereotyping as a whole is negative; however it’s not something that is easily avoided.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1BQPV-iCkU

The stereotype being portrayed in this clip from Wall-e is that we as humans are becoming lazier and in the future we will be so lazy that we won’t even be able to get out of a chair. It also stereotypes that all lazy people are fat and vice-versa. I think that this stereotype is negative and although, like all stereotypes, it may be true for some people, most people will never be so lazy or overweight. It just puts a negative connotation on everyone.

  14. A stereotype is characterizing an individual with certain characteristics just because they hang out in certain groups. I believe that stereotypes exist because it is human nature to judge and characterize people. Whether it be in school, at work, or in sports you are going to be judged and characterized into different groups. Generally, I believe that stereotypes are negative because not everybody who belongs to a group has the certain characteristics of that group. An example is that many times jocks get the reputation of being dumb, but in reality there are many athletes that are honor students.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEIn3T6nDAo

The clip that I choose is from the show The Big Bang Theory. In this clip Sheldon is the "stereotypical" nerd and Penny is classified as the "dumb blond." The clip uses the stereotype that nerds are a little awkward which can be see when Sheldon is blogging about his tutoring session with Penny. It also uses the stereotypical nerd in the sense that Sheldon is tutoring Penny on a difficult subject with would be a common characteristic of a "nerd." Penny is characterized as a dumb blond in the sense that she didn't bring a notebook to the tutoring session because she didn't realize she would have to take notes to be able to study for the tests. I think these two stereotypes portrayed in this clip give others in these groups negative attention. There are many so-called nerds who are able to behave "normal" in social settings and have friends without making the situation awkward. There are also many blonds who are extremely smart. Overall, stereotypes shed bad light on people who may not necessarily fit into the characteristics that are pushed onto them because they belong to a certain group.

  15. Stereotyping is making assumptions about a person or group of people based on some preconceived idea. This can include someone's physical appearance, gender, hobby, involvement, occupation, and the list goes on. I think stereotypes exist because it's normal for us to categorize and make assumptions whether or not we want to. We are programmed to believe what's "normal" and we like the simplicity of how things are "supposed" to be. Stereotyping can be positive or negative, but for the most part, the entire concept of stereotyping is negative because we make judgments before we even get to know a person and assume things that we don't actually know.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mMDaDiJ0xw

This is the trailer for the movie "Legally Blonde". As I'm sure most people have seen, this movie is about a stereotypical dumb blonde sorority girl who goes to law school to chase after a boy. This clip demonstrates so many stereotypes. First, it stereotypes that pretty girls are stupid and get by based on their looks. It also categorizes sorority girls as partiers and not serious students. It also stereotypes sorority girls as "dumb" or "slutty" through the tone of voice, body language, and other stupid comments made throughout the movie. Describing Elle Woods as "Malibu Barbie" and "not smart" shows this stereotype.

  16. Stereotype is a predisposition that people put on others within a particular group. Stereotypes can overestimate a person’s personality and/or personal character. The word stereotype is usually looked at with a bad connotation, but there can be good stereotypes. I believe that stereotypes exist because people within our society always want to “fit in”. If a person is within a group, then they are stereotyped for who they hang out with, what they wear, and what they do. The certain characteristics that go along with the stereotyped group does not go for all of the individuals, but we categorize them in it anyways.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJ_PwD0gOSo&feature=endscreen

The clip I found is an episode of SpongeBob Squarepants, where SpongeBob and Patrick make fun of Sandy’s home state of Texas. During this clip, SpongeBob and Patrick walk in a circle acting like hick rednecks. This is a stereotype because people think that Texas only has ranchers and cowboys. They then sing country music to demonstrate that that’s what Texans sing and listen to for music. Patrick comments to SpongeBob about Texas being “dumb”. This is a stereotype exemplifying that people from Texas are uneducated. Sandy also uses a lasso in order to catch Patrick, and SpongeBob, which shows another Texan stereotype.

  17. A stereotype is an idea that people or things with a particular characteristic are the same. These stereotypes exist because it is a way to simplify the social world around us. I believe that it can be both a positive and a negative thing. A positive thing that is a way to respond rapidly to situations because we have already had a similar experience. A negative is that we often ignore the difference between individuals.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LLFMlemZ34

I chose a Honey Boo Boo clip because I think that they are stereotyped as rednecks. I think that is very dramatized and it is almost as if the point of the show is to see how redneck they can make them seem. They make it seem like everyone that lives in the south acts just like their family. They also make it seem that all rednecks are overweight and don’t take care of themselves. This is very sad because we all know that this is not true.

  18. A stereotype is a way a person thinks about a specific person of group of persons. This assumption can be caused by the activities they take part of, the way they act, how they dress, ect. Stereotypes can be positive or negative, but they are rarely true.

As humans, we like to put people and things in groups, to make our thoughts simpler to understand. I believe stereotyping is more often than not a very negative thing, though it is a negative aspect of life, it can sometimes be very difficult to avoid. Also, I feel as though at times people do not even realize they are stereotyping people.

This video is stereotypes each of the 50 states with how the other states think of each other. It is an interesting video, because most of them are accurate on the way that people do label the other states. Most of the stereotypes listed on this video are negative and do not properly state the truth about each of the states.

  19. A stereotype is fixed mentality about people, generally categorizing them. Stereotypes exist because society likes to group similar things together in order to avoid conflict. Humans are judgmental beings so classifying others makes our lives easier. Stereotyping is a bad thing because it makes us judge others without getting to know them personally. Stereotypes are usually inaccurate, but we use them anyways.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWMCz4Dh_ow

This is a scene in Pretty Little Liars. Two stereotypes exist here, nerd and pretty girl. Spencer is a pretty girl who uses her charm to get a favor from a nerd. The nerd has glasses and is wearing a shirt that says, “shut your pi hole”, with the symbol for pi. Spencer compliments his shirt and acts nice so he will help her. It’s a typical thought that pretty girls use nerdy guys for favors. The nerd is not fazed by her good looks and charm so Spencer makes a stereotypical nerd comment. The nerd reciprocates by making a comment about her tracking down an old boyfriend and says that she has crazy eyes. He stereotyped her as a crazy ex-girlfriend because she seems desperate and persistent about finding where the number came from. At the end of the scene, Spencer makes a reference to the Game of Thrones to prove the nerd wrong, revealing that she actually has a nerdy side. These stereotypes are hurtful and prevent people from getting to know each other.

  20. A stereotype is making assumptions about people based on previous ideas of categorizing them. Society tends to group people together. Their are positive and negative stereotypes.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rbp9Ka8ikvQ
In the show Gilmore Girls, Jess( guy with the black eye) comes into town and is perceived as the bad boy. He gets a black eye and Rory (the girl) assumes he got into a fight when really he was attacked by a bird.
The bad boy stereotype is the boy that always gets into trouble. Hes the guy that always has detention, hates the jocks, and always picks fights. He's the John Bender, Breakfast Club stereotype, of the group. This causes people to judge them as bad people before they even know them.

  21. A stereotype is an oversimplified conception, opinion or image. It is comparing people to a group and not giving them the benefit of doubt. Stereotypes exist because people enjoy picking on people that are different or act stranger than them. I believe that they are negative because they are hardly ever true and it separates people according to groups. However, that person may not even belong in that stereotype group because they might not have any of the same characteristics than anyone else in the group.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdEmMWNjUdA

The stereotype in this YouTube clip is about the Asian stereotype. It has a girl leaving school and then says bye to the Asian students that are waiting in line for school to start the following day. Then one person cuts in front of the other because he “lost focus”. The guy that lost focus then breaks down and kills himself because he lost focus and his life is now over. I think this is a fairly accurate stereotype of how we portray the Asian population. Of course not all Asians are overzealous for school and are good at it, but that is how we picture them. We think that all Asians get good grades, are smart and have no other life other than school.

  22. A stereotype is an opinion, whether true or not, of a group of people; it could be based on location, race, beliefs, looks, gender. I believe stereotypes exist because people talk and make assumptions themselves and also media portrays things in an incorrect light sometimes creating a certain opinion of things. I believe that stereotypes can both negative and positive, but it just kind of depends on what the particular stereotype is. The video I found is from Legally Blonde. Elle’s boyfriend, Warner, breaks up with because with the career he wants to be in, he can’t have a partner that is stereotyped to be “dumb,” since she is blonde and could be considered a dumb blonde. Obviously, in the end of the movie, Elle prevails showing him that she isn’t stupid and becomes a lawyer.

  23. A stereotype is a view given to a person or group of people that is often untrue. Stereotypes are in the world today because of the many differences in every person. Another reason stereotypes exist is because of the history of our planet. People see others who are different than them and automatically judge them based on their appearance. This is the most common stereotype I see, but there are plenty more. Stereotypes can be positive and negative. Although negative stereotypes are more prominent but I think there are some positive stereotypes as well.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2baG40Jpn2M

There are many stereotypes in this one scene of 21 Jump Street. The fact that he starts labeling everyone that they walk by is major stereotyping. The fact that they think that wearing two straps is uncool compared to one strap. Also it shows how stereotyping has changed in the past decade, this is based on the fact they don’t know how to label certain groups. It’s also funny that he thinks his car will be seen as cool, but these kids see it as bad for the environment. This also is a great example of ingroup and outgroup.

  24. A stereo type is where people categorize specific people. Being a blonde I am used to being stereo typed as dumb and ditzy. Also, being a cheerleader I receive the same stereotypes. Most stereotypes are negative because they are case accusations about the group of people. Stereotypes are created because people will make personal judgements about people not knowing them and will make the same assumption about everyone.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOga3VZ5CGY

This shows the stereotype towards cheerleaders for being ditzy and overly dramatic. It is common for people to think cheerleaders are not athletes and only yell 'go team go' on the side lines of football games, instead of taking time to realize the skill and commitment it takes to be a cheerleader. These stereotypes become very annoying for cheerleaders to hear because of how hard we actually work. Stereotypes are a problem that needs to be fixed.

  25. Stereotyping is to believe unfairly that all people or things with a particular characteristic are the same. They exists because it makes it easy for people to simplify the world and the people that they view into simple and more than likely negative and incorrect categories. It is possible for stereotypes to be both positive and negative, although finding positive ones seems to be more difficult. A few positive stereotypes include the phrase “sober as a judge” or the saying that Italians are good cooks. While these may be positive they might not always be true. A few examples of a negative stereotype include that women are bad drivers, or that teenagers are always causing trouble. For the most part, I believe that stereotypes are negative, because for the most part even the positive stereotypes aren’t usually true.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxX5iUy50PA

The link that I provided is from the television show “Glee”. While I love this show, it does include quite a lot of stereotypes, the most often being at the expense of the Asian population. The stereotype in this clip includes the idea that all Asians are geniuses. While some of them very well might be, it’s not fair to generalize this idea across the entire population.

  27. Stereotype is a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. Many stereotypes are clichés. I think that stereotypes exist because our culture has an ideal image of people and groups of people. I think that they can be positive or negative. Some stereotypes can be positive such as Olympic athletes. When you hear someone is an Olympic athlete you think they are strong, talented, determined and amazing. Another common stereotype is that people who work at a fast food restaurant have no future or are not intelligent. A job at a fast food restaurant has a negative stereotype. Many fast food jobs have good hours and benefits. You can even own your own fast food restaurant by starting at the bottom and working the fryers.
The hit shows Teen Mom and Teen Mom 2 , on MTV, give the life of a teen mom a very unrealistic stereotype. This clip shows how the children are rarely on the show. The show is mostly about the mom’s relationships with other people and the drama in her life that sometimes doesn’t even have to do with being a mom. I believe that this show give a negative stereotype of being a teen mom. This stereotype is negative because it shows viewers an unrealistic life of a teen mom. Many teenagers are watching this show and think that being a teen mom isn’t that hard. This stereotype hurts the real teen moms out there. Other people might look at them and think it is not that hard why they complaining about it. My sister was a teen mom and I can tell you that that show is no where real what it is really like. Teaching teens the unrealistic life of a teen mom makes our culture weaker.

  28. A stereotype is how you 'judge' a person based on their past, or present, actions. Sometimes it is classified as unfairly. We are all guilty of it; it is in our nature to see a person and stereotype them based on something as little as what they are wearing. I think even the purest of hearts are guilty of categorizing people with stereotypes; It is inevitable. I honestly don't think it is good..but I don't think is bad either. I was once told that always listen to my intuition and I feel as if me walking down a street and stereotyping a male as dangerous, is my intuition. I think is part of our natural instinct to keep ourselves safe in some situations.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bMrdF3UsRM
In my video clip, Harry's wife made the mistake of cheating on him with a man she works with and got pregnant. Her sister is trying to fix their marriage by making them work it out. The stereotype in this scene is that Harry thinks Savannah will cheat on him again because that's what cheaters do in his mind. Savannah loves him and wants to make their marriage work. They are now have marriage problems because she made the choice of adultery and her husband is placing her in a category with other women who have cheated on their husbands. Because of his way of stereotyping Savannah, it is ultra difficult for her to try and work things out with the man she loves.

  29. A stereotype is common, usually not true, view of a group of people. Stereotypes exist because people pass judgement so easily. Another reason stereotypes exist are due to differences between groups of people. Stereotypes can be positive but the majority of the time they are negative.

This clip is from the movie Son-In-Law. The clip shows that Crawl (younger character in the movie) has to yell at someone who is older just to make sure they can hear him. But the main stereotype that is pretty obvious is when the grandpa is sitting on the front porch whittling wood and chewing dip. I love this movie so I think this part is freaking funny, but the implication that this stereotype is that the older generation in the Midwest sit in a rocking chair on the porch, whittling wood and chewing; I don't think the Midwest needs anymore stereotypes.

  30. A stereotype is a fixed view point that society has on a certain type of person or thing. I think that stereotypes exist because society wants them too. I think that people are afraid of the difference between groups or themselves and so we judge them. I think that stereotypes are negative. I feel that we should not judge each other based on their background or anything else. They are people just like us. Why should we judge other people when we don’t want to be judged? It goes along with treat others how you want to be treated.

Brittany on Glee would fall under the stereotype of a dumb blonde. These are some of her ‘dumb blonde’ moments. Some of the content could be inappropriate for some to watch (mainly listen). The dumb blonde stereotype bothers me a lot. I don’t understand why we view blondes as dumb, why not brunettes or red haired people? I feel that a lot of people view blondes and dumb and ditzy. While that may be true for one blonde or that moment in time, we should not view them all that way. In fact, we shouldn’t view any of them that way. Needless to say, I dislike stereotypes.

  31. A stereotype is a fixed idea of a partial group of people that use to generalize people as a whole. I believe stereotypes exists because it is way easier to judge someone by putting them in this social group and not really get to know everyone on this personal level . If we look at society we stereotype all of the time, some is negative some are positive. I believe the most stereotyping comes to play with comedy. If you watch really any animated comedy show such as Family Guy or South Park they are full of stereotype jokes. The clip that I have found stereotypes Asians, it talks about them being really smart and some bodily features. Another stereotyping commercial also comes to mind saying just pointing out the fact that women can be good drivers just like men. I believe stereotyping has a time and place, if you look at human nature we have been stereotyping for years and it has come a long way. For instance the stereotype that blacks were not equal and should not even be viewed as a human being is a terrible stereotype. But when stereotyping is used for some kind of joke or to make a quick explanation for some action that is ok. I think it is all about the person you are stereotyping, some people can shake their head and laugh about it because in some sense it is true but others may be very offended and take it as a personal attack to them as a person.

  32. a stereotype is an assumption of a group of people or a person because of their characteristics. Stereotypes can be of a person, an ethnicity, or a group of people. Stereotypes exist because people like to judge other people without actually knowing anything about them. They also exist because a person would rather "take someone else's word for it" rather than knowing a person or asking. I think stereotypes can be both positive and negative. I am a Native American so there are a lot of negative stereotypes about my ethnicity and where I come from. I have had mostly negative experiences with stereotypes but I do think there can be positive stereotypes.

This movie clip is from the old Peter Pan cartoon movie. It is a clip about Native Americans having a ceremony but it just looks nothing like a ceremony would go. I think it is actually offensive because it is an assumption of what actually goes on and a ceremony is very important to our culture. It is not just people dancing around and acting weird.

  33. When you hold a stereotype about someone or a group of people you are assuming (not knowing) that they are the same because of a characteristic. Like the stereotype that blondes are dumb, nerds are strange, boys like sports, girls like pink, all of these are stereotypes and they are not always true for every person. Stereotypes can be positive and negative though mostly they are thought of in negative ways. A positive stereotype would be that the students that attend All State Band and Choir are very talented musicians but that could also be turned into a negative by them being called band nerds or assuming they are not talented physically when it comes to sports.
I provided a link to a clip from The Big Bang Theory which portrays a "dumb blonde" and a "nerd".

  34. A stereotype is to believe unfairly that all people or things with a particular characteristic are the same. I think stereotypes exist because some people do not know what else to go off of beside their first impressions, judgments, or false accusations in the media. I think stereotypes are negative. I watched video clips on YouTube of Seinfield and it was about how, to put it simply, that all blacks are the same in their characteristics. To assume that a group of persons have the same characteristics because of their skin color is not fair to that person at all. This video just showed how common stereotypes are. I have heard before that all black people look the same, which I do not believe to be true and not fair to the person being judged.

  35. A stereotype is a sort of stigma that has been put on a specific kind of person. Some stereotypes include nerds, popular people, rich people, poor people, and even people of a different race. I think stereotypes exist because people like to put people into general categories based on their traits and characteristics as a way of judging people. They can be either negative or positive, but I think the most common types are negative.

This is a clip from one of The Big Bang Theory. Most of this show stereotypes scientists as nerds who are not as cool as other people. It also brings up the stereotype of blondes and how they are still being portrayed as being ditsy and dumb. People stereotyped in these groups probably see it more as being negative. I do not think that any blonde person wants to be generalized as dumb, and just because people are highly intelligent, does not mean that they are “nerds” as they are stereotyped to be.

  36. I believe a stereotype to be an oversimplified image of a group of people, person, or thing. Stereotypes exist, because it is easiest to view someone/something as one trait. For the most part, stereotypes are viewed as negative, because it is only viewing the group of people, person, or thing as one trait.

That 70s Show has many stereotypes, and this video demonstrates a view of them. One of the stereotypes would be Fez’s character. He is only viewed as foreign, and the TV show never even states his last name. He is referred to as “foreign kid” several times throughout the show and is viewed as lesser of a person due to this. Hyde is the super-cool guy, Kelso is dumb, Eric is a “smartbutt”/nerd, Donna is hot, Jackie is rich/harsh, Red is a “hardbutt,” Kitty is protective/motherly, and the list could go on and on. This is my favorite show, and since there are so many stereotypes, it is often easy for me to predict what will happen according to those stereotypes. Although I do not agree with stereotyping, I throughly enjoy this show which is full of them.

  37. A stereotype is a view of a person or group of people that is usually oversimplified and incorrect. I believe that stereotypes exist because people judge one another all of the time based on first impressions, what we look like, where we work, who we hang out with etc. I think they are negative because they give us an initial impression of someone without actually getting to know who they truly are.

There is a video on you tube by Jenna Marbles, titled Thanks Obama. I thought it was funny because so many people have been blaming Obama for everything that goes wrong, and Jenna Marbles takes it to the extreme, and makes fun of it. It is slightly offensive, so I did not want to post the link. However, I got a good laugh out of it!

  38. A stereotype is a belief that people have certain characteristics because of who they are, black, white, asian, Christian, Jew, Muslim, ect. Stereotypes exist because people need as much information as they can about people they meet so they place them in stereotypes to get that information. I believe that most stereotypes are negative and serve no real purpose, and have spent most of my college career shedding stereotypical thoughts in order to see people for who they really are.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2EA2nA2ar0

In the clip, Peter believes that all asian people are good at math and can do it on command, mentally. A stereotype like this can be very insulting because not everyone is good at math. At one point, I was working on math homework, and a friend who is asian walked into the room, and I asked him if he knew how to complete the problem. He took it as I was asking him because he was asian and I thought he would know how to do it. This was not the case. If people expect asians to be good at math, it will slant how people see asians.

  39. A stereotype is a judgment you make of someone based on their actions or what they are involved in. For example, male dancers are usually portrayed as gay and cheerleaders are often thought of as stuck up or ditzy. I think stereotypes exist because people choose to not take the time of getting to know someone before they label them. I believe people believe they are too busy to meet everyone, which may be true, but is no excuse to judge someone based on appearances or actions without really knowing them. Overall, I see stereotypes as being primarily negative.

The clip I chose is from “Friends” where Phoebe, the stereotypical “dumb blonde” spells her name in a way that portrays the low intelligence level she has in the show. This is just one of the many examples in this show including Phoebe’s low intelligence level.

  40. A stereotype is a widely known and generalized concept or belief about a specific group of people. It's difficult to explain why stereotypes exist, as there are so many that exist among so many different cultures, races, and walks of life. It is my belief that they exist because when one group feels either threatened or simply curious about another, outside group, they will look for clues to rationalize and explain the latter group's behavior. These beliefs soon spread and stuck throughout generations, and have been used to continue generalizing people who differ from others.

This Family Guy clip shows a white man meeting his asian fiance's parents for the first time. Upon showing his pleasure to meet them, he is immediately met with criticisms from his girlfriend's father, who judges him harshly until learning of his salary. This stereotype that Asian parents stress success and hard work over loving relationships is definitely a consistent one, and I would be lying if I said I knew no Asian-American friends with strict, success-oriented parents. However, this stereotype may be creating a self-fulfilling prophecy, as now that many Asian-Americans are expected to be successful, the pressure increases drastically.
